CHAPTER 1 — Before the Storm
The office was already awake when Katherine Rosch stepped inside. The low murmur of voices drifted through the open workspace, blending with the soft clatter of keyboards and the smell of fresh coffee. Morning sunlight spilled across the polished floors, catching onto glass partitions and stacks of paperwork.
“Morning, Kat,” Mira called from reception, sliding envelopes into neat piles without looking up.
“Morning,” Katherine replied, offering a small smile.
She shrugged off her coat and made her way to her desk, weaving through coworkers already deep in conversation. Someone laughed near the break room. Someone else cursed quietly at a jammed printer. It was normal. Predictable. Comforting.
“Kat!” Jenna waved her over, holding two mugs. “You’re here before me again. I swear you teleport.”
Katherine laughed softly. “Just habit.”
“Well, habit gets you tea.” Jenna pressed a lavender blend into her hands. “You looked tired yesterday.”
Katherine blinked. “Thank you. Really.”
“Don’t thank me yet,” Jenna said, lowering her voice. “The Hale account is already causing drama.”
Katherine glanced toward the glass conference room. Two coworkers stood inside, posture stiff, voices sharp. She felt the tension prickle faintly at the edges of her senses — not overwhelming, just… noticeable.
She didn’t step in.
She never did.
She reached her desk, set down her tea, and opened her laptop. The familiar dashboard lit up: workflow audits, client reports, project timelines. She slipped into her routine easily, fingers moving with practiced precision.
A soft knock tapped her desk.
“Um… Kat?”
Liam hovered there, clutching a folder as if it might bite him. “Could you look at this? I think I messed up the segmentation again.”
Katherine offered a gentle smile. “Sure.”
Relief washed over his face. “Thank you. You’re always so patient.”
She reviewed the file, made a few notes, and handed it back. “Just adjust the hierarchy tags. You’re doing fine.”
Liam nodded quickly and hurried off.
Her morning continued like that — coworkers stopping by, small interactions, quiet moments of competence. She liked the rhythm. She liked the predictability. She liked feeling useful.
But something felt different today.
Not wrong.
Just… different.
A subtle shift in the air.
A quiet tension beneath the usual noise.
A feeling she couldn’t name.
By ten-thirty, the office had grown louder. People whispered in corners. Managers walked briskly between departments. Even Mira at reception looked unusually alert, glancing toward the executive floor more than once.
Katherine frowned.
“Is something happening?” she asked Jenna during a quick break.
Jenna shrugged, but her eyes flicked upward again. “No idea. But everyone’s acting weird.”
Katherine nodded slowly.
She didn’t know what was coming.
She didn’t know how much her life was about to change.
She didn’t know who was about to walk into her world.
But she felt it.
A shift.
A ripple.
A quiet warning through her instincts.
Something was coming.
Something big.
And it would start soon.
