The next day Alice was exhausted, she went through the motions mindlessly. Even Julia seemed concerned about her, but Alice kept avoiding her. What could she say? Give her the satisfaction that the damned book had an effect on her? Try to explain the crazy dreams/hallucinations whatever they were? So Julia could think Alice finally lost her mind?! She usually could bury herself in her work not matter what bothered her, but this time it didn't work! She read the same line on her email over and over again, she missed phone calls, she did not react to her colleagues stupidities that wasted her time.. Her mind was elsewhere and her heart- well, she kept reminding herself that according to office lore she did not have one.
The third time Julia tried to approach her she simply said she was taking the rest of the day to work from home. She was sure everyone had already noticed something was off about her and she did not want to show any vulnerability or weaknesses to her coworkers.
She made a short stop on her way home for take out and a bottle of something alcoholic telling herself she just needed a little extra help to relax.
