PROLOGUE
Melissa wait, giggling I called out to my little sister as we played tag,She was faster than I am courtesy of her being on the schools running team and there’s me the girl that loves to play tag and can’t go 5secs without wheezing like a strangled chicken.
Noticing my failed attempt at catching up with her while approaching our three bedroom apartment, she looked back at me giggling and shaking her head telling me to exercise more and stop lounging around the couch postponing my gym registration
We decided to sit on the swing dad made while mel was 15,so much for being the daddy’s girl, I asked for a tree house for my 16th birthday and the rest is history, trailing back from my old tree house heartbreak I looked up back at my 15 year old curly head,5”11,black brown eyes, eye shining under the bts fan cap she’s putting on and a mysterious smile I don’t know why it’s there but I guess I’d find out soon enough
Looking at the stars after examining my sister I heard my name coming from the kitchen window where mum is asking me and my sister to come in and have our dinner, still trying to comprehend what she was saying through the muffled sounds of something that sounds like you guys are no longer kids to play tag bla bla bla,I heard my so very mature sister jumping on her feet and shouting the last person to get to the door is on kitchen duty for the rest of the week, girl you know that’s going to be me,now I know why she has been wearing that very creepy smile on her face all day but I’m still going to try keyword “Try” and take Atleast 5 running steps without wheezing or screaming like a pregnant woman trying to give birth while running, sprinting like the cheetah she is, I heard Melissa shouting out to me that I’m on kitchen duty like I don’t already know from the onset, So much for being on the school team,If only I didn’t love the couch sports more, I’m sure my room will be filled with Gold medals from all kind of sports but I guess we haven’t had the international sports federation come up with a couch lounging sports, but until then I’ll keep up with my couch love.
Snapping out of my weird day dreaming I stepped into a kitchen filled up with the awesome smell of jollof rice, and I could see my awesome Nigerian mom frying plantain omg I can’t wait to sink my teeth into that, even smelling that I’m already having a foodgasm,I took my sit by the right side of the dining table only to look up and see Melissa already dishing the rice without waiting for the subordinate, the amazing golden brown plantain and I asked her the question I always ask and waiting for an answer I always get which is I DO NOT LIKE FRIED PLANTAIN,like how tell me how,who doesn’t like fried plantain,it’s like asking from pizza without the cheese or ice cream without m and m,or going to McDonald’s and not getting the chicken like what exactly is your purpose on earth young lady, only for Mel and mum to echo at the same time saying “I love food too much” well duh if there’s something I thank God for the most,it’s the gift of food cause food is life but I guess the don’t understand.
Mum finished frying and brought the plantains to the table while screaming honey food is ready and as expected my dad came down in his jollof rice record of 1 min 14 seconds so much for falling in love and getting to eat free awesome food I guess that’s where my dad and I have something in common
My dad met my mum on one of his many trips to Africa,Nigeria to be precise, telling their love story sometimes gives me the hibby gibbies but here it goes,my dad worked with a bank then and he was the head of the loan department they were trying to extend their branch to Africa cause at the time they proposed a project called “Operation develop Africa” and my dad was hell bent on bringing africa to all part of the world and he felt if money was able to get to people they could visualize and actualise their dreams and all those big big bankers words so back to my story, apparently my dad was to get to the Airport take a cab going going to the island cause his place of stay was at lekki, well only for my father to get to the airport to take a cab going to ibeju lekki which is also on the island and it’s completely a whole different place to lekki,So while the cab man dropped him there he perambulated and at some point got mugged due to being a what we know in Nigeria term as “JJC” meaning jolly just come, fortunately for him my mum saw the whole scene but couldn’t do anything due to the fact that they were carrying arms and all,she only stepped in and was able to be of help by taking him home and seeing to his wounds cause apparently he didn’t want to leave his wallet so he got a blow to the head, well I guess he wanted to prove he was kind Of like a John cena or Anthony joshua cause he watched WWE RAW well sorry dad seeing sometimes isn’t believing lol, well I guess after all the tending and feeding and all the good stuffs people do,phone number led to can you meet me at Hard Rock Cafe by 5 to are you free to see a movie this weekend to this and that to meeting my grandma and well I guess the rest now is history cause voila we have 18 year old me and 15 year old Melissa
Kim,and how is the preparation for prom coming along cause I can see the whole running around and credit card bills my dad asked while chewing the peppered chicken my mum is best known for,I tried not looking at his mouth as he spoke but I couldn’t take my eyes away I was shouting in my head to look away countless times but I guess it is what it is,my mum decided to tease me by asking about who my date was going to be and automatically Mel and I exchanged a look and the look said exactly what was placed in my heart which was “Don’t fall for it” cause trust me African parents are one of people you should fear the most in your entire life especially the mothers, then she decided to make it worse by saying you can talk to me,this is a safe space right let me know who’s taking my daughter to prom tonight afterall you’re becoming an adult and these are the kind of things you should talk about with me says the woman that told me and I quote “Don’t be friends with boys they’re only after your virginity”if she knows my bestfriend is a male I’m sure I’ll be castrated ten times over in her head but not in reality cause we’re Christians and my mum stands firmly on the scripture that’s says “Go into the world and multiply”but i don’t think my mum digested the multiplication part cause I ain’t no Mary,I heard my name like 4 times before snapping out of it and realizing I’ve retreated into my brain to have a little family meeting of my own well I think I need to stop doing that,Sorry mum please can you come again, sighing she said who’s going to be picking you up and what time are you going to be leaving for prom on the 13th,you know it’s your birthday that day and I don’t want you being out late on your birthday. My dad looked at me and said my little girl is growing up so fast and I just looked at him and smiled then I told myself wow when did I clock 15 it was just like three days ago but look at me now on my way to being an adult but truth be told I don’t think I’m ready for so much responsibility I just want to be a mummy and daddy’s girl forever and just get things sorted by them but I guess that can’t happen cause like they say, change is inevitable and I hate how true that is,getting the hint that I didn’t want to give a comment to any of their responses we ate in silence for the rest of the night
This is one of the conversations I’d never forget cause from this point onwards, was where things started getting real
