Chapter one
A WORLD THAT CHOSE EVERYONE "The unknown belongs to those willing to seek it." — Explorer's Association Motto The morning bells of Astravale rang seven times. Their deep chimes rolled across the capital, stirring the city from its slumber. Street vendors unlocked their stalls, the aroma of freshly baked bread mingling with the crisp morning air. Mana-powered trams glided silently along crystal rails suspended above the streets, carrying workers, merchants, and students toward the heart of the city. High above the rooftops, a young woman rode a stream of wind to deliver letters. No one looked up. It was ordinary. In Elaris, abilities were as common as breathing. Fire illuminated blacksmith forges without coal. Water users kept fountains flowing year-round. Earth Awakeners repaired roads in minutes. Even children played games by tossing tiny balls of flame and shaping miniature animals from ice. Abilities weren't miracles. They were life. Aeron watched all of it from the window of a small apartment above an old bookstore. He smiled faintly. Then sighed. "Running late again?" The voice came from downstairs. "I'm coming, Mrs. Elira!" The old woman laughed. "You've said that every morning this week." Aeron hurried down the narrow staircase, fastening the buttons on his academy uniform as he descended. The bookstore smelled of old paper and cedar wood. Shelves packed with dusty journals and forgotten maps stretched from floor to ceiling. Most customers came looking for spell manuals. Aeron preferred the history section. Mrs. Elira noticed where his eyes wandered. "Another history book?" "They're more interesting." "They're older than your grandfather." "So are you." Silence. The old woman slowly raised an eyebrow. "...You know I still charge rent, don't you?" Aeron immediately raised both hands. "I apologize for my terrible life choices." She tried to maintain a stern expression. She failed. A laugh escaped her. "Go. Before you're late." Aeron grabbed the lunch she had wrapped for him. "Thank you." "Come home before dark." "I always do." "You said that yesterday too." "...Fair point." Stepping outside, Aeron was greeted by the bustling streets of Astravale. The capital never seemed to sleep. Merchants called out today's prices. Seekers in polished armor walked toward the city gates, preparing for another expedition into the wilds. Children pointed excitedly as a pair of floating airships drifted across the blue sky. Aeron slowed for just a moment. Every morning, he imagined himself standing aboard one of those airships, sailing toward forgotten ruins no one had ever explored. Not to become famous. Not to become rich. But to uncover the truth hidden beneath Elaris. History fascinated him. The official version never quite made sense. How could entire civilizations vanish without leaving behind more than scattered ruins? Why were so many ancient records incomplete? And why did every scholar who questioned them eventually stop asking? "Aeron!" A familiar shout shattered his thoughts. Someone barreled toward him. He didn't even bother turning around. Three... Two... One... A heavy arm wrapped around his shoulders. "There you are!" "Ethan." "The one and only." "You nearly dislocated my shoulder." "It builds character." "I'm fairly certain it builds hospital bills." Ethan burst into laughter. Towering over Aeron by almost a head, Ethan looked every bit the warrior his Earth Ability suggested he'd become. Broad shoulders. Messy brown hair. An endless appetite. And absolutely no indoor voice. "You eat yet?" Aeron lifted the wrapped lunch in his hand. "I'm about to." Ethan stared at it. "...Mrs. Elira made that?" "Yes." "...Can I have half?" "No." "A third?" "No." "A bite?" "You ate breakfast." "That was an hour ago." "You scare me." "I scare doctors too." Before Aeron could answer, another voice interrupted. "You should." Noah approached with a book tucked beneath one arm. Unlike Ethan, Noah looked perfectly composed. His silver hair was neatly combed. His academy jacket was spotless. And somehow... He never seemed rushed. "Morning," Noah said. "Morning." Noah looked at Ethan. "Did you ask Aeron for food again?" "...Maybe." "You finished yours before sunrise." "I was hungry." "You are always hungry." "It's called consistency." The three friends laughed as they continued toward the academy together. For a little while... Aeron wasn't the boy without an ability. He was simply Aeron. And for him... That was enough. Ahead, beyond the crowds and the fluttering banners of the kingdom, the towering gates of the Royal Awakener Academy came into view. Waiting just inside those gates were another day of lessons... Another day of whispers... And another day in a world that had chosen everyone else.
