Chapter one.
It was a beautiful morning in the town of Gregory, South Dakota when a girl Sage heard a gunshot. Not any gun shot, a rapid fire shot.. She had never been scared of a gunshot, but this one. It wasn’t a hunter. She bolted inside, almost breaking the door, she yelled, “mom! Dad! Kaylee!!” They didn’t reply. She was frightened, she ran upstairs
to look but they weren’t there. She even looked downstairs, in the car everywhere. but they just weren’t there. She didn’t know what to do, so she called her grandma. She picked up the phone from the wall, it started dialing. All she heard was, “hello?! Sage? YOU NEED TO HI-“
Before it cut out,the call was very static and so she panicked and started crying and pacing. She hid in her mom's car, it was a 1987 Chevrolet Camero. The doors were super loud, almost giving her away. She laid down on the floor in the car. She heard a loud crunch, coming from outside. She was tempted to look but was full of fear. She waited, till she heard someone drive away.
She sat up, waited a minute then went back inside, she grabbed her mom's keys and looked back one more time, then she did it. She started the car, and she became nervous. She stopped, and thought, “I don’t know what’s going on but I need to leave.”
She opened the car door and sat down anxiously. She started the engine. The car was very loud and sounded like it almost broke down. She slowly but surely backed up. Her foot started shaking, fast, slow, fast, slow. Then she looked back one more time. She saw someone. Standing in her bedroom window. She backed up to get a closer look, it was a random man staring right at her. She started backing up as fast as she could, though she was only going 30. She had a long driveway, more tucked in the forest.
She looked back and saw the man, running towards her. He was getting faster, but then she had an idea. She stopped, the man looked very confused and paused. For a moment he thought she gave up. But no, she started going backwards super fast. He looked away at the trees then realized… she floored it backwards and slammed into the man. His eyes were full of fear, his leg had been broken. Sage glanced at him and winced, “I’m sorry but I need to go!”
As she drove down the road. She took a left and went to a small town called Colome. She got on Carr street and didn’t hear anything, she took a left onto w third st. Finally she found a little dark house with red shingles and a little garage next to it. She stopped the car, got out, walked to the garage and opened the garage door in hopes of finding food or supplies. She heard a rattle so she backed up in fear slamming into the front of the car. Then, a small, grey, flufffy kitten popped out with a mouse. “A kitten?!” Said Sage. She was scared for nothing. She had never been allowed to own a pet before, “Shoo! Shoo!” Sage waved.
She said as she waved the little kitten away. The kitten stepped forwards and rubbed against her leg, dropping the mouse, “Ick that’s gross” she said while stepping back. She heard the poor kittens meow for help and decided to pick up the kitten. She carried the kitten in a cradle to the car. She had to get gas so she put the kitten in the passenger seat and closed the car doors. The small yet cute kitten curled up in a ball and layed down to sleep, making biscuits on the clothes she had stored in the back.
She started backing up, got on the bumpy allyway and started to drive down the road. Finally she reached a small gas station called Rocky’s. “Ice cream and fresh food huh?” She said, “I guess I’ll have to be the judge on that” she said with a grin across her face. She pulled into the parking lot and parked the car, she got out and looked around and saw something in the distance. “A car?” She thought. “I’m sure it’s nothing, I’m probably just me being paranoid.”
She looked in the window at the kitten and smiled. She started walking towards the gas station and opened the door. She got in there and stuffed her small yet roomy book bag full of food for the road. She didn’t know how long she would be driving or where she would be going. She walked over to the ice cream and got a small bowl of vanilla ice cream for the kitten. They had a small section for pets so she grabbed some cat food. She started to walk out of the gas station as she saw a tall black suv in the distance driving towards her. She ran to the car, placed everything in the back and quickly filled the gas. “Cmon kitty we have to go.”
She got in the car and quickly got buckled. Then she heard a noise in the back seat. as she looked back she saw it was something under her clothes pile. She looked back quickly to see a little girl, maybe a couple years younger than her, hiding. “Who are you and why are you in my car!?”
She gave her a stare and her eyes were wide, almost scared looking but went silent. She looked at her and looked back at the car coming closer, “whatever we have to go soon or we will get caught.”
“Caught by who?” The little girl said. Sage gave her a sad look.
“Oh so now you speak? Whatever, I don't know yet. Are you at least okay?” as she said when she drove away. “I'm fine.” she replied. She started driving away and she saw them driving faster so she sped up. She turned into a field and hid in the tall corn, though she left a trail, luckily the followers didn't notice.
The followers passed her “oh good” she thought. “Now, we gotta get going. I was thinking maybe Colorado? Or Washington? I've always wanted to go there!” The little girl just sat there ready for sleep. “If I’m gonna take you with me, I at least have to know your name.” She still wouldn’t budge. “Come on, just tell me who you are?” She said,”Fine, my name is Emily, Emily brown.”
“See that wasn’t too hard. I’m sage, sage Marie Marshall.” She said looking back at her. She turned around and looked at the road. She saw a line of smoke coming from the SUV So she buckled and got ready to go. She started backing up, looked further down the road and saw a SUV, The one that was chasing them.
Then she got on the road and started driving the other way, “There that should lose them for a while” Emily slouched down in her seat and saw a glimpse of a light underneath sage, “what’s that” she said reaching for it. “looks like a tracking device,” she said. She grabbed the device and showed it to Sage. Sage froze, “Well don’t just stand there! Throw it out the window!” As she opened the window to throw it out it started beeping, first slow then rapidly. They threw it out the window as fast as they could, it blew up mid-air. “That was close.” Said Sage. Emily agreed. she couldn’t believe what had happened in the past 24 hours. She was scared. She didn’t know what to do next. sage showed Emily the cat toy she had swiped while she got the kitten.
“It’s so cute! A little mouse.” She said happily. And at that moment, she realized just how much she had missed her family.
“What's wrong sage?” Emily said.
“Nothing, it's just… I really miss my mom.” she replied.
“Yea me too..” Emily said in a sad tone. “What's your mom like?” Emily asked.
“What?” sage replied.
“What's your mom like? Is she nice?”
“Yeah, she's really kind. She's nice to everyone, my dad? He's really nice too but he gets frustrated real quick though. But I don't blame the man. He's 36 and works like he's 21.” said sage
“They sound amazing,” said emily. “What's your parents like emily?” “oh, well. They're passed. I live with my grandma..” “I'm so sorry Emily I didn't mean to-” “No it's fine, I just don't really like talking about it..” “Okay well if you ever need anything, I would say I'm right here but it's really only us here…” said sage. Emily laughed, “thanks, sage.” sage nodded her head and pulled over into a small clearing. “Alright well it's almost night, we can hide out here for the night.” “Okay '' Emily replied. “Goodnight sage” “night emily.”
