Was Macro an artful liar? One of the hardest parts of an investigation was holding things close. Argolicus remembered Pennus telling him that he’d seen Quintinus and Macro meeting several times. This knowledge was in the back of his head while he talked to Macro.
Each time he had talked to Macro, he didn’t mention meeting with Quintinus before his death. Pennus, the old wine merchant, had insisted that he saw Quintinus with Macro. But, Macro had seemed so open when they talked.
Pennus had mentioned seeing Donicus with Quintinus as well as with Macro. These meetings seemed suspicious because both men were now dead, killed at someone’s hand. But it was only the word of one man. A man who seemed to relish spying on others. So much had happened since his talk.
