Chapter 1
Grey eyes, shadowed with darkness and stress, stared at the sky above. Their owner was perched on the railing of her balcony, glass of alcohol in her hand. The cool night wind did nothing to sooth her raging thoughts and her desire to end the lives of people. Those f*****g backstabbers. How could they do this to her? After all her hard work and dedication for the company, they treated her like this? Maria clicked her tongue and took another swing of her drink. She couldn’t stop reminiscing about what happened that day and it kept her anger boiling under her skin. Mere hours ago, Maria had the hope of becoming the newly appointed CEO as her father planned to step down from his position due to his weak health. She had been working for the company since she graduated at the age of twenty-five, bringing the company more deals than they could ever imagine. She had a skip in her steps when she entered the board room that afternoon, sure in her heart that the board members and her father would have selected her after seeing all the progress she had achieved. She had been confused by the sight of her step brother walking in with two other directors and helping their father walk in, but she thought nothing of it, seeing as Victor had never shown interest in the company. She had hurried over to her ailing father, whose expression fell a little into one of guilt the moment she came close to him – her usual soft and timid smile on her lips, her eyes warm with love behind her glasses. That should have made a siren go off in her head but she thought nothing of it – a dreadful mistake on her part. Her father began the meeting by stating how happy he was with the progress of the company, even putting her on the spotlight and acknowledging her successes. Maria had been so sure that she’d be sitting on the seat of power, having been selected – but that dream was crushed when her father stated who his new successor would be. Her brother. Her f*****g dumbass brother who didn’t know his left from his right. Maria had been stunned by the decision and she wasn’t the only one that had been in the predicament. The board members who had wanted Maria to take over voiced their concerns, having voted for her. But unfortunately, one of the board member who had the largest share in the company had voted for Victor, making him higher above Maria in the votes. To say Maria had been devastated was an understatement. Her heart had bene crushed, even more so when she later on discovered that if her father had voted for her, she still would have won. Maria bit her tongue and swallowed down her tears in the boar room, not wanting to give her smug step brother the satisfaction of seeing her in distress. She had congratulated him with a smile, which had him frowning a little, and wished him success. To add salt to wound, her father commented that she should be by his side and help aid the company to greater heights, as if she hadn’t been doing that before. “f**k!” Maria threw her empty glass, the item shattering once it made impact with the wall. “f**k f**k f**k f**k f**k!” Maria yelled in rage, her eyes bloodshot from her minor breakdown mere minutes ago. Her appearance was as tattered as her living room, the woman having gone on a rampage. Once again, her father made his golden son his priority. Since she was little, she had never received her father’s love. Her mother, when she had been alive, had assured her that her father loved her, but he never showed it. He had no respect for her, not even her dead mother – and he showed this when he brought in his mistress into their home mere days after her mother’s death. It was upsetting to see her father with his affair family on her mother’s funeral and that made her cry the more back then. Maria had tried everything to get her father’s attention. It worked sometimes but in the end, when it came to his wife and son, Maria was the least of his worries. “Should I make the company implode from the inside?” She muttered, her teeth nibbling on her nails. “They don’t deserve the success I worked hard for. They don’t!” Her nail snapped, her facial expression looking crazed. As someone working in the inner circle of the company, Maria had lots of dirty secrets about all of the board members, secrets that they thought she didn’t know about. It was a beautiful thing to be seen as a timid woman who couldn’t hurt a fly. A timid woman only focused on getting her father’s love and attention. Even though the truth hurts, it was also to her advantage. “Yes. Oh, the press is going to love his!” Maria let out an unhinged chuckle, strutting over to where her phone was. She picked it up and opened it, being immediately bombarded with missed calls, texts and emails. Most calls where from her father, the texts from her step mother and brother, and the emails from the board of directors – but she ignored them all. She opened a secret app on her phone, one she had created and stored all the evidences and secretes of every single members of the board that had screwed her over. She copied that of her step mother and brother and was about to head to the internet to search for a popular journalist who had a burning hate against the company – but a text stopped her in her tracks. She blinked at the notification from the private number, reading the small words that showed, before clicking it in interest. Maria’s eyes when wide as she read the message. It was from someone claiming to be the secretary of a popular figure in the world. The secretary of Aridam Donahue, the CEO of Donahue Enterprises just contacted her. Maria was suspicious to the max, the timing of this not a coincidence. She slowly moved back and sat on her cough, digesting the content of the message. Aridam Donahue wanted to meet up with her and was making hints of initiating a business deal with her. What a sly man. Maria wasn’t stupid to not know that this was a perfect time for a smart business rival to strike against her father’s company. Dragonstorm Cooperation was a large and successful business and it was rivaled with Donahue Enterprises. These two companies were head to head in major production that the human race used and had been a tough battle between the two for two centuries now. These two generational families won’t hesitate to go down into the depths of hell to destroy the other. It now confirmed Maria’s suspicions that one of the board member supporting her was an double agent, seeing as it was only those in the board that knew about the selection. A memo hasn’t been given to the rest of the staff yet. Maria’s loyalty weighed heavy on her, her mind running through different scenarios of how this meet would end if she decided to meet up with the man. On one hand, she’d be betraying the family, but on the other hand, the thought of revenge in a sophisticated manner was a delectable thing. If her family wanted her loyalty, they shouldn’t have f****d her over in the first place. With her heart set firm and determination to burn down the world, she clicked on the call button.
