Kyhan
As the meeting ended and Reire and Penny left, exhaustion seeped its way from my bones to my muscles. I slumped on my chair, finding little comfort from the cushions. We’d decided the teams, agreed on contingencies, bickering and arguing until both sides were satisfied. There was just one person I wanted to see right now, but Reire requested to have their dinner prepared beforehand, refusing to dine in the packhouse.
I sighed as I threw my head back. “The meeting’s over. Can’t this wait until tomorrow?”
“Why does she have the ring?” asked Samuel.
“What other answer is there?” I replied. “It belongs to her.”
Siel took a step forward. “Does that mean she’s coming back?”
“I didn’t ask.”
Silence befell the room, the brothers hesitating to prod further. It almost felt like deja vu - the four of us in my office, each trapped with our thoughts of why she …
I shook my head. The last image I had of her was the look of shock on her face when I stole a quick peck on her lips, not knowing it would be the last for years. I licked my dry lips, reminded of our little heated moment. I could’ve been feeling her kiss everyday if I paid more attention, if I’d been more sensitive to her feelings instead of assuming everything was going smoothly.
“When you said she was in the Circle … I wasn’t expecting her to be part of the team,” Siel said slowly, his overgrown brown hair spilling over his eyes as his chin dipped. “She has … grown.”
Samuel let out a sad chuckle. “She looks a lot like Mom.”
“Go home, take a shower, and get some sleep,” I said nonchalantly. “I’ll increase security around the guesthouse so you don’t have to worry about anything.”
“What … exactly do you plan to do with her?” asked Samuel, his green gaze narrowing. He unfolded his arms, letting them fall to his sides. “She’s your mate, but … you don’t seriously plan on asking her to be your Luna, do you?”
My palms slammed on the table and the chair was pushed back as I abruptly stood. I gritted my teeth then growled. “Do you have a problem with that?”
Kai growled in my head. I didn’t say a word all these years, but if they had been better brothers, none of these would’ve happened.
Siel grabbed his brother’s arm and nudged him backward. “Calm down, Alpha. Given her history with the pack, it might not be best for her to lead with you. Please … reconsider. If not for the pack, then for her.”
I took a deep breath as I held back my wolf from taking control. If we had been a better mate, she would’ve stayed. We all had our own card of guilt.
I turned my back on them to hide the frown that quickly settled at the reminder. “Get out.”
I’m not in the same spot as both of you. To me, she’s a wish the Goddess granted.
“Is there something you wish to tell me?” I questioned, the other presence in the room still learning on the wall.
“Did you leave Yula out for a reason?”
“Are you against it?”
“No,” he answered. “I’ll be less worried if I can keep an eye for her. How did you know?”
I chuckled, turning to face him. “‘Subtle’ isn’t in your dictionary, Raph. Neither is it on hers.”
He smiled faintly as he fixed his posture. “Thank you, Alpha.”
“She’s already made you soft. It’s creepy.”
Raph laughed as he headed for the door. “You’re not really the subtle type either, Alpha. Everyone could smell her scent on you.”
“What the -”
He closed the door on my face before I could refute. I smiled, staring at the empty room. My stomach was digesting itself, but I wasn’t in the mood to eat.
I retired to my room after cleaning up. Knowing that she was within reach kept me awake on my side of the bed. My mind kept returning to her wet soft lips and flushed cheeks, her breathing as heavy as mine, and her scent that I missed for so long. It relentlessly played on like a video on loop until it was almost midnight.
A crazy thought entered my head. i***t. She’d be asleep by now.
“What if she isn’t?” said Kai, his tongue sticking out as he yawned.
A small part of me hoped that she was thinking of me, thinking of what transpired this morning. Maybe she was awake. I muttered this until I found myself outside the packhouse, a coat over a mismatched pair of cotton jogging pants and a shirt, walking towards the guesthouse. Something must be wrong with my head. The trees stood proudly as thick outlines, witnesses in the secret of this hopeless i***t.
I just … need to see her. I’ll see her then leave.
It occurred to me that I didn’t know which room she was in as the guesthouse came into view. I can still turn back. I can see her tomorrow.
Every step that I took towards a bedroom on the first floor trampled on every argument in my head that begged me to stop and turn around. What am I doing? I suppressed a pitiful laugh. She could be regretting everything at this point and here I was hoping that she had trouble sleeping and might want to see me. I was relying on the silvery light and my innate ability as a wolf to see in the dark, having forgotten to bring a flashlight with me.
I pressed my back up against the wall, listening to any sound that would validate my ridiculous assumptions. Goddess, I’ve lost my mind.
Just as I was about to end this idiotic thing, I heard a long sigh. My breathing slowed. I already made it this far. I quickly took a peek. My jaw dropped. Like a sign from the Goddess that this was the right course of action, Luan was seated on her bed.
The lamp on the bedside table casted a soft glow on her slender body like the dimming rays across the sky by twilight. Her long brown hair cascaded in waves down her back, their softness palpable. My mouth went dry. How can anyone have the heart to mistreat her?
She raised her chin, and I gulped audibly at the sight of her. Her defined profile stopped my breathing. A sudden urge to hold her, keep her safe within my arms, swelled inside me. Before I could stop myself, I tapped on her window.
The sound startled her. Her head jerked towards my direction.
“Lu -” I licked my lips. “Luan,” I whispered.
Her brows knitted. Nevertheless, she stepped towards the window with ease.
When we were together, she knew how to navigate around our room and insisted on doing things she could on her own. I smiled as she slid the window open. Old books and wildflowers - she had a peculiar scent that I was obsessed with. It pervaded my lungs as soon as the transparent barrier between us was out of view.
“Kyhan?”
The tips of my ears heated up and I realized this was uncouth behavior. I swallowed. “Hi …”
“What are you doing here?” she whispered, surprised.
“I …” For a split second, I considered lying. “I … uh … wanted to see you.” I don’t want us to start over with lies.
“Oh,” she replied, her cheeks turning pink. She rubbed her arms. That was when I noticed that there were goosebumps on them from the cold. Her nightgown did little to help with the chill, just covering her whole body.
“I - You should go back to sleep. Sorry for bothering.” i***t.
She turned her face away, pink taking on a deeper shade. “You - You’re not bothering.”
Goddess, how can she be so cute in this awkward setting?
“I wasn’t sleeping,” she confessed then bit her lip, I almost groaned.
“Oh … uh … why?”
Red spread from her cheeks to her ears, it was a mesmerizing change to watch.
I smirked. “Was it something embarrassing?”
Her mouth parted slightly. “Wh - I don’t have to tell you anything! Why are you really here?”
“I don’t have to tell you anything,” I replied, grinning.
“If that’s the case, I’m going back to bed.” Luan made a move to slide the window close. In a hurry, I grabbed her wrist.
“I already told you … I wanted to see you.”
Her jaw clenched. I retracted my hand, inwardly cursing. “So - Sorry.”
As she nursed her wrist, another idiotic idea came to mind. “Will you … uh … come with me?”
Luan squinted her eyes.
“Just for a walk?”
“A walk?” she asked dubiously.
“It’ll tire you out to help you sleep,” I said out of desperation. “I’ll be by your side the entire time.”
She raised her head like she was looking past me, her brows furrowed. Then she shook her head. “Sorry, Kyhan. I’m really tired today.”
“I … understand. Goodnight, Luan.” I smiled and did my best to hide the disappointment in my voice. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Yeah,” she replied, forcing a smile on her face. Don’t do that. “Goodnight … Ky.”
Luan slid the window shut then drew the curtains. I stared at it for who knows how long before I dragged my heavy legs back to the packhouse. At least she called me Ky. However, no matter how hard I tried to distract my mind, an unsettling feeling nagged at me as I dropped my coat and crawled under the covers - she was afraid of me. Did she think it was an attempt to kill her?
Something slipped past my eyes, which I hurriedly wiped with the back of my hand. This wasn’t the end. It was just the first day. I still had time to win her heart. I should be glad she entertained my visit instead of alerting her sisters. I got to see her just like I wanted - this should be enough for me.
The room felt dreary and cold. It was missing her scent and the warmth of the sheets beside me. I needed her - needed to hold her so tight and never let go. I combed my hair back and sighed.
I’m overreacting. I’ll get to see her again tomorrow.
In an attempt to save some dignity for myself, I threw the covers and went to the bathroom to down a few pills to help me sleep. It took more than the normal dosage for a human. Minutes ticked by then I felt the effect. Letting her feel my pain would get us nowhere. The least I could do was let her get a good night’s sleep. She had to deal with a lot today; it was a bad idea in the first place. It’s normal to be tired after a long day.
My thoughts began to fuzz, the voice in my head drifting away. As my eyelids drooped, I shifted to her side of the bed.
