Kyhan
The following day immediately greeted us with unforeseen chaos. Through the glass doors of the entrance of the pack clinic, Samuel stoody by, waiting for the rest of the team. His hair was ruffled up like he’d been running and he was still in his gym clothes.
“Alpha,” Reire called behind me. They’d just arrived, looking like they’d been rushed. Unlike yesterday, they all appeared like they had just woken up. Luan had her hair down, hair sticking about everywhere like she didn’t have time to brush it. I quickly averted my eyes to avoid suspicions; I’d been careless yesterday.
“We came as soon as we heard the news,” Reire added.
I nodded, suppressing a grin from how cute she looked; my mate’s peculiar scent was a welcome change. I continued towards the door with Reire beside me. As soon as we entered, Samuel began to brief us on the situation.
“They found him unconscious by the main road just this morning, about a kilometer from the southeast borders.” He led the way to the emergency room. The atmosphere was more tense than usual. The nurses were agitated, their eyes darting from the brothers to Luan. They bowed slightly then scurried off.
The Head Gamma and the Head Omega were slumped on the chairs. Their heads tilted to us as soon as we arrived. Siel was wearing gym clothes as well. Margo stood at once and bowed deeply.
Samuel continued with his report, keeping his composure as calm as he could. “Margo and five gammas found him on their way to get groceries. If he’d been left there a little longer, the pack nurse said he would’ve died of blood loss.”
“Have you sent a team to guard the area?” I asked.
“Three gammas volunteered to stay behind while Margo was escorted back to the pack. The team should be reporting in any minute now.”
Margo smiled gently at me, not a trace of fear on her face. It was a relief to see her safe.
“Where is he?” I asked Siel.
“He’s been transferred to the recovery ward before you arrived, Alpha.” His pupils had dilated into slits, which meant that his wolf was clearly agitated. As Head Gamma, he took charge of training half the time. Although I was the Alpha, the gammas shared a bond within their ranks, forged through the hardships they had to endure to earn the respect of their title. He sighed as he closed his eyes. “He’ll live.”
His eyes returned to normal when he opened them again. “Thank you for coming,” he said to the women behind me.
“Is there anything we can do?” asked Reire.
Siel gave me a look.
“Go,” I answered, giving him permission. “Take as many as you need with you.”
I turned to the sisters and requested their help. “Can I ask you and Penny to go with them? I’d like Yula to have a look at the patient. We need him to talk as soon as possible.”
“We’ll be taking Luan with us,” she deadpanned, looking me in the eye.
I glanced over at my mate, my brows knitted. She can’t be serious. This could be a trap.
What should I say? If I oppose Reire’s decision, Luan would be insulted.
“A smaller party is ideal.”
“A bigger team will cover more ground,” she argued. Penny glared at me while Yula hid behind Luan, who had a passive expression on her face.
Samuel cleared his throat. “Luan will be safe within the pack, Reire,” he said. “The enemy won’t openly attack where our forces are concentrated.”
“It’s not that, Beta,” said Luan. “I can act as a guard, only I’m not accompanying any of the trackers. I’ll be standing by on a rendezvous point and alert them if an enemy is approaching or hiding somewhere.”
Luan spoke nonchalantly like it was normal for a blind girl to detect enemies from a distance. Unless we caught wind of their scents or they openly revealed themselves, we had no other choice but track them down, hence the need for trackers. Her words hinted that she could somehow sense them, which was almost impossible considering they’d have to cover a wide area of the land and number of wolves she’d have to keep track of. Even if she could channel her wolf’s energy to further enhance her senses, she didn’t have a mind link with the pack members and ...
My jaw clenched as a thought crossed my mind. Is she trying to get away from me?
“You’re not going. It’s too dangerous for you.”
“Alpha, I’m in charge of my sisters,” Reire insisted. Anger flashed in her cold blue eyes as her mouth twisted into a sneer. “I get to make this call.”
I met her distasteful eyes. How selfish can she be? Their first target would obviously be the blind one! My Luan!
I just wanted her close where I knew she was safe. This was obviously her first time on a mission and therefore had no experience fighting rogues, let alone vampires!
Luan stepped forward and stopped beside Reire. “Alpha, thank you for your concern but I am capable of handling myself. I wasn’t trained to be a tracker, but I am a gamma of the Red Claw.”
Reire grabbed her wrist and pulled her to stand behind her like she was shielding my own mate from me. “You don’t have to justify yourself, Luan,” she hissed.
If there was one good thing that came out of this shitty morning, it was the faint dust of pink that settled on her cheeks as she looked down. Goddess. What is she thinking?
“I don’t understand what you two are arguing about when a man is fighting for his life. Every sister will be accompanied by the Alpha’s high ranks. I’m in the middle of the chain, but I can go with Luan.” Raphael walked in with a bottle of water in hand, his grey t-shirt drenched from sweat. “I came as soon as I heard. I was on border patrol duty.”
It was either him or Samuel. “Prepare yourselves. A gamma will escort you to the borders.”
Reire turned on her heels, dragging my mate out of earshot. The sisters talked amongst themselves. She gave me a small nod before they left. Yula awkwardly joined us afterward.
“Don’t mess up,” I warned Raphael as he turned to leave. He simply nodded, gave Yula a glance, then walked away.
The gamma had an anxious look on her face. Her eyes kept darting towards the corner like she wanted to go with her sisters. I gave her a smile. “Samuel will go with you to the recovery ward. Please look after our gamma. The nurses will happily assist you if you need them.”
“I - I- I’ll do my best,” she replied with an exaggerated wave of her hands.
“Please. You are too modest,” I said, making her blush.
“Please follow me,” said Samuel, quietly leading the way.
I then faced Siel, the one with the highest authority going on this assignment. His face hardened.
Kai growled in my head. He wanted to go with them but we had to be here to assure the pack members. It had already gotten around by now that one of the captured gammas was found. The only reason his family wasn’t rushing over was because I strictly told them not to. It was a harsh decision, but we needed information now.
“Bring her back. Alive. In one piece.”
“It’ll be the last thing I do, Alpha,” he replied, his tone laced with promise.
“Keep her guarded.”
“I’ll leave her with our best.”
I waved a hand, dismissing him. He bowed slightly before his footsteps faded.
“Margo, a word?” I asked, smiling at the senior woman who had been waiting for her turn. She was a heavyset woman with all kinds of lines marring her face. She was the only omega left who actually knew how to manage a household when I was declared as the new Alpha. At the age of sixty-three, she trained the omegas and helped organize and delegate tasks around the packhouse.
She smiled teasingly as she smoothed her skirt. “She is a beautiful young lady, Alpha.”
“Did my Dad say anything yesterday?” I asked, getting straight to the point. Because my Mom required a tank of patience juice, Margo spent a majority of her days tending to her after briefing the omegas on their tasks for the day. She was the only one Mom wouldn’t lash out on as violently as she did on others who tried to calm her.
The smile disappearing on her face wasn’t a good sign. She shook her head slowly.
It would’ve been better if he said something, anything. At the very least, he was decent enough not to cause a scene yesterday.
“Are … uh … are you okay?” She looked fine from head to toe. It was her mental state I was more concerned about.
Margo scoffed. “I’m old, Alpha. I’ve seen my share and more.”
I placed an arm around her shoulders. Changing the topic, I happily said, “Let me walk you out. The omegas must be waiting for you.”
“She’s wearing the ring,” she noted. “Does that mean she’s accepted you, Alpha?”
I sighed, my shoulders sagging. Margo was one of the few wolves who knew about my obsession with Luan. For as long as I could remember, she had always listened to me. She cared for me like I was her son, and although I never said it, she was the Mom I never had.
“I’ll be sure to find a replacement soon so you can take it easy,” I said as we reached the doors. “The renovations for the cabin are almost complete. It’ll be more comfortable than before.”
Margo scoffed yet her eyes twinkled. “I’m not a frail old lady, Alpha. I’d rather be useful in the packhouse than alone in the cabin.”
“I’m not saying you’re not useful!” I exclaimed, defending myself. “I’ll always need you, M- Margo.”
“Sshh,” she said as her arm shot up and she pinched my cheek. “You’ll make your mate jealous, Kyhan.”
I chuckled when she let go. She kissed me gently on my cheek then smiled. “Hang in there, Alpha.”
I smiled as I watched her back. She already liked Luan. I hoped my mate could meet her in a more friendly atmosphere next time.
As I made my way to the recovery ward, nurses pausing to briefly bow as I passed by, Siel scratched at the wall in my head. I sat on one of the chairs in the lobby and closed my eyes as we communicated through the mind-link.
“Alpha, we’re leaving for the borders now. I’m taking Drake, Blake, Peter, and Rose with us.”
The pranksters, the annoying one, and the ice queen. Despite their reputation, they were surprisingly reliable. They should be enough to keep her safe when things take a turn for the worst.
“Keep me posted. Don’t even think of fighting vampires if they decide to show up. The tables can easily turn on us.”
“I understand, Alpha. We’ll keep the sisters safe.”
“May the Goddess shine her light upon you.”
“Thank you, Alpha.”
I ended the link and sighed. Something didn’t feel right, but I couldn’t point a finger on it. It felt like we were missing something that was just out of reach. Something that could shed some light into whatever the hell was happening.
“Wake the gamma,” Kai growled.
“The man almost died, Kai. Give him a few more minutes.”
“Alpha!” a nurse called as she rushed over to me, a frantic look on her face. “Beta is asking for you.”
