Chapter 21 To Be Happy (Part II)

I caught a whiff of oranges and cinnamon when I reached the living room. I’d recognize this scent anywhere - it belonged to Samuel. However, it was also laced with vanilla. “Oh, hi!” she said, sounding startled. “I’m Annie, Samuel’s mate. Ca – Can we talk?” What’s she doing here? My wolf growled at me in warning. I put my bag down near the door. “My sisters are upstairs. I suppose you don’t want anyone overhearing our conversation?” “N- No. We can take a walk to the training grounds. Alpha Kyhan is training the gammas today.” I nodded and walked beside her in silence, just waiting for her to speak up. Evergreens surrounded us; their calming scents carried by the cool breeze. I’d always adored this about the Moonstone’s territory – the central part nestled amongst towering trees. Roads from here led to other parts of the territory. It was convenient, both for the members of the pack and the pack’s enemies. “You must have a lot of questions,” said Annie, breaking me away from my thoughts. Her voice was unsteady but kind. She struck me as a caring person, much like Yula, but not as gentle. Her breathing had gotten heavier and her footsteps, slower. Her mate’s scent overpowered hers. There was no mistaking it – she was pregnant with Samuel’s child. Must be nice to have a family. “Did you know that not every pack has an Alpha?” “No. That would just be a docile group of rogues. Every pack has an Alpha.” She laughed. It was short, contained, but I had a feeling she took no offense. “We considered ourselves a pack. Although, we were constantly getting attacked by not docile rogues. I lost my mate on one of their attacks – he saved our daughter from one of them.” Twigs and leaves crunched under my shoes. My face held no emotion as she shared her story. This saved me from asking Samuel those awkward questions. “Lulu was only three back then. We disbanded not long after his death. Some families tried to join other packs. Some of us tried to find our own ways. I was fortunate to have come across your brother.” Annie paused for a bit as if reminiscing on that time while I reigned in the bubbling anger inside of me. Next, she’s going to tell me what a loving and caring mate Samuel is and how she’s perfectly happy with him. Just f*****g great. “We didn’t click right away.” Huh? “I couldn’t bring myself to trust him and he felt like he didn’t deserve a mate. We were a mess back then. Somehow, Lulu brought us together.” “Congratulations. Your life is better now. Where are you going with this?” I questioned. The undertone of spite in my voice made my insides clench. I shouldn’t be acting this way towards her – she wasn’t at fault. “I’m sorry you had to go through that,” she said gently. “I understand if you never want to have anything to do with this pack again. Just know that your brothers regret it every day. My husband smiled for the first time in a long time when you arrived.” Annie stopped walking then lightly held my hand. “If I may …” She placed it on top of her huge belly, rubbing my palm on the fabric of her clothes. “When I told him I was pregnant, he swore never to harm our baby. I don’t know why your brothers did those things, but the kind of man I know him to be would never do such a thing.” Easy for you to say. “Something happened to this pack, Luan,” she said, her voice a shaky. “When I got here, I knew what I smelled. Living outside of pack life, you come across rumors and other supernatural beings.” My brows furrowed, confusion compounding when her hand began to shake. “What are you trying to tell me?” She lowered her voice, whispering, “Witches. I found symbols carved up in the trees near the Alpha and Luna’s home. I don’t think Kyhan knows about it. He was sent away and returned only when he was to supersede his father.” “Why – Why are you telling me this?” I asked, flinching from when her fingers dug on the back of my hand. “Because you are our Luna,” she said. “I kept my mouth shut for years knowing no one here will believe me. They’re all too caught up in what they’d done – this would’ve created a divide. I don’t know what the previous Alpha and Luna were up to. But you have be by Kyhan’s side.” “I barely know you!” I yanked my hand out of her grasp. “You’re the Beta’s mate. Keep spouting lies about Kyhan’s parents and you’ll see what this pack is capable of; you’ll see the what kind of man you mate is.” A long pause settled between us. She was an outsider in every sense of the word. She had no idea about pack culture. If she thought I’d fall for her tricks just because she was pregnant with a child of my own blood, she thought wrong. “Whatever you’re up to, quit while you’re ahead. You have no idea what this pack can and will do to you.” This pack worshipped Kyhan’s parents. They always had their way. I was the daughter of their Beta and Head Gamma, but that didn’t do s**t to spare me from their cruelty. “The training grounds are straight ahead,” she said, defeated. I nodded and turned my back on her. I’d rather talk to my mate than listen to her claims. No wolf would associate with a witch – the price of a deal was too steep. “Find the maple trees.” I continued walking, ignoring her. Why me? I’m not the Luna. This isn’t my problem. This isn’t … Leila looked at me with expectant eyes, asking me to take this chance. Her clear green eyes gleamed like emeralds as she pleaded with a sulking face. She whined like she was wounded, trying her hardest to win me over. I could go back to the normalcy of my life in the Circle instead of dealing with this pack. Kyhan is strong – he could do this on his own. He doesn’t need me. He can figure this out. He – I paused in my tracks as a gust of cold wind blew past my figure, whipping my hair across my face. I was doing it again. I was running.
