The café was alive with the usual morning rush—steam from the espresso machine mingling with the scent of fresh pastries. Lila balanced a tray of cups as she moved toward Marcy, who was setting up the counter.
“Morning, Lila! You look… different. Happier?” Marcy asked, raising an eyebrow.
Lila smiled, leaning against the counter. “You wouldn’t believe what happened yesterday,” she said softly, trying to contain a grin.
Marcy’s eyes widened. “Oh? Do tell. Spill it, Lila.”
Lila took a deep breath. “It’s about Kaden,” she said, watching Marcy’s reaction carefully. “We were paired for a project in class…”
Marcy blinked. “Wait… you and Kaden? The quiet new student? He spoke to you?”
“Yes,” Lila admitted, smiling. “And he’s not really quiet like I thought. He… flirts. A little. Subtly. And it’s… kind of thrilling.”
Marcy’s jaw dropped slightly, and then a teasing smile spread across her face. “Flirts? He flirted with you? Lila, I did not expect this.”
Lila chuckled, stirring her coffee absentmindedly. “I wasn’t expecting it either. Every time I tried to guide him through the project, he’d respond with these small, teasing comments… and it’s not irritating—it’s kind of fun. He’s confident, aware of how he affects people, and somehow manages to distract me without even trying too hard.”
Marcy leaned on the counter, clearly entertained. “So he’s aware. And you like it?”
“Yes,” Lila said, nodding, a soft smile on her lips. “I enjoy it. I mean, he’s… charming in a very subtle way. I didn’t think I’d notice it so quickly, but he has this vibe… it’s different from anyone else.”
Marcy grinned knowingly. “Oh wow. So the quiet new student is actually a little flirty. And here I thought he was just brooding.”
Lila laughed softly. “Nope. Brooding only when he wants to be mysterious. Otherwise, he’s sharp, teasing, and confident. Every small interaction with him makes me pay attention. And honestly… I like it.”
Marcy shook her head, still smirking. “I can see it. You’re enjoying it more than you’re letting on.”
Lila sipped her coffee, her thoughts drifting back to Kaden’s subtle teasing. “I am. But I’m focused too. We have a project to complete. It’s just… enjoyable working with him in this way.”
Marcy nudged her playfully. “Enjoyable, huh? Sounds like you’re hooked already.”
Lila shrugged, a faint blush on her cheeks. “Maybe a little… but I’m also paying attention. It’s more fun than I expected. He’s confident, flirty when provoked, and I… I like it. That’s all.”
Marcy laughed softly, clearly entertained by Lila’s recounting. “Well, I can’t wait to see how this develops. Kaden has no idea what he started.”
Lila smiled to herself, letting the café noise fill the space between them.
