EPISODE 5:FIRST CLASS,FAMILIAR FACE

799 Words
Lila slung her backpack over one shoulder, the familiar clatter of her keys echoing in the quiet corridor of the college. Another day, another lecture, and her usual thoughts of café shifts and assignments filled her mind. She had grown used to balancing college and her part-time work, the rhythm of her life steady but not without little surprises. The lecture hall buzzed with chatter as students settled into seats. Lila scanned the room for her usual spot near the window and set her bag down, flipping open her notebook. She had barely started reviewing her notes when a new presence caught her attention. Her heart skipped. Across the room sat a boy she immediately recognized. Kaden. The same young man from the café. The one who had left a lingering curiosity in her mind. He was seated in the middle row, notebook open, scanning the lecture slides with that same effortless calm. He didn’t look up, didn’t acknowledge anyone, yet his presence made her chest tighten with a flutter of nerves and excitement. What is he doing here? Lila thought, biting her lip. He’s a student too? She shook her head, trying to focus on the professor’s words. But her eyes kept drifting toward him. Every subtle detail—the tilt of his head, the way his fingers traced over the pages, the faint crease in his sleeve—held her attention. He was aloof, cool, distant, exactly the way he had been at the café, and it made her fascination grow stronger. Minutes passed, and Lila tried to focus on her notes, though every scribble seemed pointless compared to the quiet intrigue of watching him. Her mind raced with questions: Who was he really? Why was he always so calm? And why did he affect her so intensely without even speaking to her? Finally, the professor assigned a short discussion activity, and students shuffled into groups. Lila moved toward a small cluster near the front, glancing around, when she noticed Kaden rising and walking past her. Her heart jumped. He was coming closer, and suddenly the air felt charged with something unspoken. “Uh… hi,” he said, voice calm, almost indifferent, as he stopped near her group. Lila blinked, surprised. “Hi,” she replied softly, cheeks warming instantly. “You’re in my class?” His tone was casual, but there was an edge of curiosity in his voice that made her stomach flutter. “Yes… I’ve been here a while,” she said quickly, feeling flustered. “I work at the café sometimes… maybe you’ve seen me there?” Kaden’s eyebrow quirked, a subtle hint of interest. “Maybe,” he said vaguely, finally allowing his gaze to meet hers for a brief moment. Then he returned his attention to the discussion sheet in front of him, folding it open carefully. Lila’s pulse raced. He had actually spoken to her. For the first time. And yet his tone was indifferent, controlled, as if he didn’t want to reveal too much. That made her want to engage him even more. During the discussion, Lila tried to focus on the group work, but she kept stealing glances at him. He participated minimally, contributing only when necessary, but each word, each movement, seemed deliberate. Calm. Aloof. Unreachable. By the time the activity ended, Kaden stood, slinging his backpack over one shoulder. He glanced toward Lila briefly, as if acknowledging her presence without giving anything away, and started toward the exit. Lila felt a tug in her chest, a mix of frustration and fascination. She wanted to talk to him, to ask about the café, about the notebooks, about anything—but he walked with that same untouchable aura, leaving her wanting more. “Wait—uh—good luck with your schedule,” she finally blurted out, voice a little too high. Kaden paused mid-step, his dark eyes meeting hers again, a faint, almost imperceptible smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “Thanks,” he said, voice flat but measured. Then he walked away, blending into the stream of students. Lila exhaled, leaning against the wall for a moment, letting the adrenaline fade. Today had been ordinary in every way—a regular lecture, another busy morning—but the presence of Kaden had shifted something subtle inside her. He remained distant, mysterious, indifferent—but she wanted to unravel the layers behind that calm, unreadable exterior. As she packed her bag and moved toward her next class, her thoughts swirled. She couldn’t stop replaying their brief conversation, the unexpected acknowledgment, the spark of curiosity he had ignited. College had always been a place of routine, of schedules and lectures, but now it held a new, unpredictable element. And Lila couldn’t wait to see him again.
