Chapter 4 - Building Bridges

Declan P.O.V

It's been a while since I have been in London and seen my father. We used to get on but drifted apart a while back but he has witnessed that when he signed two big offices over to me I made the businesses thrive. Now the old man wants me to show him how it's done, there is definitely some issues in the London office and hopefully me being down for a month will help. I will be happy if I can get it done quicker as I really don't want to be down here or seeing much of my dad.

After just being stuck in a Elevator I go to find one of my old best friends that works in the financial department. Although we stay in contact I haven't seen him since I came down for the day 3 years ago for his wedding. Today will be a nice surprise for Ryan and it will help settle me before I have to go and see dad.

I walk around looking for him and suddenly I hear him.

"my god Dec what a huge surprise to see you around here!" he gives me a man hug and pat's my back.

I smile " Its been a while hasn't it but here for a month so we definitely have some good time to catch up!"

"Let's go grab a coffee from the kitchen area" Ryan says as he leads the way.

I grab a coffee and sit down "how's Kirsty and married life treating you" I say with a smirk

Ryan looks at me and chuckles "it's actually better than you think you should try settling down sometime your 28 not 18" he says laughing.

I roll my eyes as it's something he always comes out with when we speak together.

Ryan gets excited and quickly says "actually I'm glad your here saves me telling you over the phone"

I look at him wide eyed..I have a feeling I know what he is going to say.

"we're going to have a baby Dec, I'm actually going to be a dad" he says quietly but with a huge smile on his face.

I was right I thought that he was going to say that "congratulations Ryan" I say as I start drinking. That would be my worst nightmare but for Ryan I know he and Kirsty have been trying for a while now so I am happy for them.

I start to tell him what I am doing here and even he said that things need improvement here. With him being in finance he would have a great understanding so I start by asking him if he can email all the reports that show where there taking a loss.

He looks at me and said "not a problem mate il do it soon as I'm back at my desk"

I thank him and start to finish my coffee, them Ryan whispers "have you seen the old man yet then"

I tense up and shake my head "nah I came to see you first but will be heading up soon I guess"

Ryan gives a nervous grin "you never know you may be able to solve your differences" he says hopeful

I doubt it from what the lady said in the Elevator I don't think he has changed abit I thought. Ryan looks at me and says "you look full of doubt you haven't seen him yet give him a chance at least"

He has a point I guess I should at least speak to him. I then think about the poor lady with the crutch and how she had a major issue with my dad that much she called him and Arsehole.

"Ryan what's the lady called with the crutch that works on 6th floor?" he looks up at me "oh that's Paige"..ofcourse it is I know who she is its Paige Brooks we have communicated through emails over projects. I'm disappointed to hear that she has had trouble with my dad as even I know how hard she works and has pulled out some amazing work.

Ryan is now looking puzzled "why?"

"she had a fall outside the Elevator and I helped her up, she looks to be having a bad day" I say with a frown

Ryan looks sad "she has been definitely getting worse, I do feel sorry for her as she is such a lovely lady. I work along side her alot for the financial side of the projects ...she is such a hard worker."

"well I suppose I best get this bit out the way and actually head up to see the old man" I say as I put the empty cup down. We stand up and i tell him to congratulate Kirsty for me and that I will visit before I leave here. Ryan even goes as far as making arrangements for a pub night, this makes me smile as this will definitely be needed if I have to be around the father for a month. I say goodbye to Ryan and take the stairs this time up to the 6th floor.

I get into the floor and make my way down to my father's office, I'm looking around and happen to see Paige she is on the phone looking really anxious. I may go see her after I speak to dad to make sure she I okay after the fall she had.

I get to the top desk outside my father's office and see a young lady easy on the eye at the reception desk. I knew who it was from contacting dad from time to time.

"Hi Sian is my father ready for me?" I say quietly.

she looks up all flustered and after looking at me all over and licking her bottom lip she picks the phone up "Sir, your son is here.." there was a little pause and then she says "okay will do" and she puts the phone down.

She looks up at me "go through Declan" she says with a smile. I look at her desk and see a photo of her and a man and then look at her hand to see she has a wedding ring. Maybe my dad has changed he would usually get the single desperate lady's to be his receptionist and then sack them when he was bored of them. I smile at Sian and walk through to be greeted with open arms by my father. I reluctantly give him a hug back and take a seat on the couch beside his desk.

"Oh son it's been a long time since I have seen you in flesh you are looking well" he says proudly

"thanks" is all manage to say to him as I look around his office.

"I am so glad that you have come up to help with this situation I have tried everything but still coming up with a loss each month" he says with a puzzled face.

I look at him and start to relax "well I have got Ryan emailing me the reports we will work out where the discrepancy is"

He looks at me and smiles " I knew I can count on you, you make me so proud how you have turned this business round I'm so happy to have you on board. You can have the office in the corner whilst your here and il let everyone know shortly of who you are"

I give a thank you look and grab my phone to check for messages. Dad looks at me and smiles "so my boy how's life up north? do you have a partner?" he questions.

I just look at him part of me wants to just say I'm here for business not social but I think of what Ryan said about maybe making things okay between us. I look up at him "erm nope, no one special" I reply quickly. Dad just smiles "ah waiting for the one to sweep you off your feet or enjoying not being tied to one person?" he says looking at me.

"ah you know how it is dad" I say with a touch of sarcasm which he didn't pick up on.

"that I do son, ha that I do" he chuckles.

There was an awkward silence and then he has to go and ask don't he.

"How's your mum doing these days?" he questions with his awkward grin.

"DON'T even ask about her dad" I snap.

"I will always love your mum son" he replies...but by this time I have stood up and I'm a little angry.

"Again dad we are not talking about mum!" I say with a warning.

He puts both hands up in a surrender and agrees that he is no longer going to talk about mum. He then asks Sian to gather everyone on this floor to the office as he has an announcement. He looks at me and smiles "we will get better son, you will see and I'm so proud that you have come to work by my side" he proudly says. I give him a nod and a small smile as Sian tells us everyone is ready outside.

I follow him out and see everyone wondering what's going on, and questioning who I am. I then see a familiar face of Paige who looks a little shocked to see me, I make a mental note of making sure she is okay from her fall as my dad starts talking to everyone.

Once he tells everyone I am his son there is a few shocked faces but the one face I look at is Paige who now looks very worried and won't even look our way. I was about to go walk up to her and see why she was worried but dad said he will show me around the building and introduce me to the other floors so I followed him to the Elevator.

Paige P.O.V

We all get dismissed and told to get back to work, I slowly get my way back to my desk and Gemma is saying she cant believe how good looking Declan is and that she is shocked that he is Mr Dodds son. I look at her and feel sick and just wish that sometimes I would think before I speak.

"I may aswell say goodbye now Gemma as I'm definitely getting the sack" i say with a sad face.

Gemma looks up from her computer "what did you say to him?" she questions.

"ha ....well, only that his dad is an Arsehole and a son of a b***h" I say with my thumb up and awkward smile.

Gemma gasps and laughs "oh s**t Paige! how you going to get back from that"

I look down and place my hands over my head. "I have no idea il just pretend I have no clue what is going on" I shrug.

I look down and see a missed call from one of our suppliers and instantly think about Max. Gemma was about to talk more but realised I have a deadline so left me to try and meet it for today, I am a very determined person so will make sure I get what Max needs to finish the job. ..
