The Long Shadows: From High School Bully Victim to Heart's Confidant
An Unexpected Tale of Redemption and f*******n Love
Prologue: The Hallways of Memory
High school corridors echo with more than footsteps—they resound with laughter, whispered secrets, and, for some, the sting of unkindness. For Ethan, those hallways were a minefield. The gentle, bookish soul found himself a target, shadowed by Tyler, the charismatic athlete whose laughter often came at Ethan’s expense. Days blurred into years, each memory a bruise beneath Ethan’s skin.
Ethan sometimes felt like he couldn’t get a break, because high school was supposed to be his escape from the a***e, he experienced daily at home. His adoptive family didn’t really love him, and he was often beaten and locked up in the basement without food. They only let him out when he was needed to do chores, ironing his brother’s clothes, washing his car, mowing the lawns, cleaning endlessly, and often going to bed without food. The family always called him good for nothing, even though he was so clever and brilliant with his studies. The reason his brother Mathew hated him was because Ethan was so smart, and he knew that Ethan’s brilliance was the only gap he would never be able to close.
Ethan’s adaptive father and mother hated him because they had never wanted to adopt any kids, but Mathew’s grandfather insisted that they adopt Ethan, without ever revealing why. The only thing Mathew was good at was basketball, and he was always hiding behind Tyler, his best friend, to bully Ethan at school.
Ethan’s parents wanted him to drop out of school because they were afraid that his grandfather might make him the CEO of the family business. What they didn’t know was that Ethan had applied for a scholarship in Ireland, hoping to stay far away from these people. He had been through so many foster families and, in many cases, he had to fend for himself. Because of that reason, he had started saving money since he was a little kid for his escape. As luck would have it, he was kicked out by his adoptive family and left to fend for himself on the day he received his admission letter.
Ethan had four weeks before starting university in the autumn, but since he had nowhere to go, he decided to travel to Dublin in the hope that he would be able to get a job during those four weeks. He vowed never to return to the Ashford family until his death.
Time proved to be a patient healer. University brought Ethan new friends, self-assurance, and, eventually, a career in executive administration. The wounds of youth faded to scars, reminders of his strength, rather than his suffering. Still, echoes lingered— especially of Tyler, the king of that long-lost kingdom, whose shadow once seemed inescapable.
Upon his graduation, Ethan decided to come back to London and forge a fresh start, hoping for a bright future. He had cut ties with the Ashford's and hoped that they had also forgotten about him. But Fate, with its peculiar sense of irony, spun their threads together once more.
When Ethan applied to work at a thriving tech start-up company, he was stunned to find Mathew’s best friend at high school, Tyler, at its helm. Older now, Tyler was sharp, driven, but the bravado of youth had faded into a more measured confidence. During their first meeting, past pain flickered behind Ethan’s eyes, but he steeled himself. He needed the job.
Tyler, for his part, didn’t seem to recognize Ethan—or perhaps he was simply too busy to remember. Ethan hoped that Tyler was no longer friends with his adoptive brother, because he didn’t want to ever be part of that family again.
