Chapter 8 : Luck.

Kris became bored as soon as the professor started his lecture. He absentmindedly stared at him lecturing meanwhile all the other students busily took note each of his words. " I have already understood many things after reading that book. His books are kept till now, there has to he something important. Alicia said the previous royal family found this book in an ancient graveyard and the current Orion family is already taking a huge risk by keeping it under the nose of church and magic alliance. What's the catch? Sigh, there's still so much i don't know. Reading always doesn't help, you need practical experience too. The general classes is about to end. I should prepare for the ranking classes. A simple flaw might reveal my secret, those old fogeys in the academy aren't just for show. Fortunately there's no ranking class today. " The academy was so big that it has more than sixty magic towers, covering an area each. Each student has their own designated room, because magicians needed personal space more than anyone for experiments and so on. Now Kris also has his own personal room provided by academy. The experiment room attached to his living room was much bigger. It was more like a laboratory. Kris returned to his room, he didn't bother to greet his neighbor who lived next to him. " And also i found that my black mana core is very different from the writers mana core. A magician needs three breaths of time to unleash a normal spell. The stronger spell it is, the more time it would take, but..." As Kris said this he extended his hand opening his palm forward. Wisp of black fire was released from his palm instantly. " It didn't take any time at all. I could use dark elemental spells instantly, but i wonder what would happen if i try to use fire element. Even though i'm a C-class but i have my own advantage. My mana core reacts to my thoughts and will. According to the book, using spells require right amount of mana uses, and understanding the intricacy of the spells construction. One can not learn spells just by watching, they needed its construction formula. When a magician wants to unleash a spell, he needed to precisely remember the spell construction and his control over the use of mana must be accurate. His spell would cause backlash if this two requirements aren't met. Using too much mana would cause a backlash, a little less will also cause backlash, it needs an exact amount of release, thats why comprehending spell construction is so much important. The more mana i use, the stronger my spell gets. Using mana precision theory doesn't work for me. Hahaha this could be my greatest advantage in battle. My opponent needs time to prepare his spell, in the meantime i would have already unleash my spell against him. His spell will only have devastation according to its rank, but i could show rank three power with just rank one spell using more mana. But it also has its demerits, my black mana core could only store 60 to 70% mana, consuming too much mana in one spell will lead to mana starvation. I will also be in danger if another opponent show up at that time." Kris was thinking over his own circumstances over and over. He entered the experiment room, sitting down with his eyes closed. His bright red mana core slowly turned black, then red , then black again. It constantly switched between red and black. Kris was doing it purposely, trying to get a strong hold over the control of mana core. He opened a book that he had borrowed from the academy library. It contained information regarding fire elemental spells and other knowledge. After a while Kris sighed feeling a new headache. " Although i have faked my red mana core, i still won't be able to use fire magic. Because my red mana core is just fake no matter how bright it looked like. And tomorrow is ranking class, if they see that i can't use fire magic then my secret will be exposed. I will be executed immediately. " Kris frowned deeply, this isn't something that can be solved outright. " There is a way regarding this issue but it's too much risky, one mistake and i'll be dragged down to hell. " " So troublesome." Thoughts kept colliding inside his mind trying to find a solution. " Knock knock " Kris opened the door upon hearing the knocking sound. " There's notice, a practical exam will be held tomorrow, don't miss unless you want to fail." The young man said. He was the same age as Kris. Kris could vaguely remember the young man was in the same class as him. " What about the ranking class? " " Ranking class will be suspended. Okay my duty is done here. If there's nothing else, I'll be going. " With that said he left. " Exam details will be informed right before it's beginning, so that no one could cheat. Might as well go with the flow, if situation turns out badly, i'll just have to rely on my luck. " Kris threw everything to the back of his mind, laying on his bed, sleeping tightly. The past few days he had been busy storing information. Academy rules and regulations, learning history an so on. He didn't had enough time for rest. All the students was standing infront of a huge multicolored space gate. They looked at the space gate with curious gaze. No matter how hard they tried they couldn't see the view of the other side. " Students, you lot are this years apprentice magician, and true mages of the future. In order to broaden your horizon and practical experience we have decided on this exam. After stepping through this space gate, you will be sent to a location. All you have to do is hunt down three hundred spike winged crow in order to win within one week. Two hundred to get second place and one hundred for the third place, any lesser will also be placed accordingly. Fifty rank two mid grade magic stones for the first place holder, twenty rank two low grade magic stones for the second place holder and ten rank one high grade magic stones for third place holders. You can hunt as a group or solo, but you have to remember if you hunt solo, your magic points will be shortened more than half. How is that? Because if you hunt ten mana beast with five people in your group, each member of your group will get fifty magic points all together. If you hunt ten mana beast alone, then you'll get only ten magic point. Magic points can be exchanged for potions, magical items, spells etc from the school inventory. It's more like merit system. About the safety issue, all of you will not be under any kind of surveillance but there's a detection system on your robes, if you suffer any kind of mortal wound, the system will detect it automatically and we'll send a professor to rescue you. Failing to hunt down more than ten spike winged crow will be dimmed as a failure, you will be removed of your student status immediately. Any questions? " As soon as the professor stopped, all the students burst into an uproar. Such strictness made them surprised, if you can't hunt more than ten then you'll be removed of student status? It's too hard. Among all the students Kris stood there expressionlessly, his eyes flickered with strange light from time to time. The princess wasn't too far away, looked at him, even she couldn't guess what he was thinking. " Okay, i'll give you half an hour to discuss wether you want to participate as group or solo. " The professor's voice reverberated aloud in everyone's ear. All the students started gathering together creating their own group. Their was also rules in creating a group. One group can not contain more than one S-class or A-class magician. In each group there has to be at least one F to C-class magician. Alicia intended to invite Kris in her group but Kris shook his head slightly gesturing her. He looked around and saw everyone has their own group, no one was participating solo, he was the only one left alone. " If i participate solo, my points will be reduced sharply, i cannot use my dark magic to make up for the loss. Staying in group i will be under surveillance constantly, i won't be able to execute my plan. " Kris was calculating the pros and cons of having a group and going solo. Just as he was thinking a student approached, looking at him with menacing eyes. " Hey, we are on short of a C-class magician. You have the honor of joining our leaders group, be proud commoner. " " What the f***, did he really said this? Cliche words of a henchman." Kris didn't know wether to be angry or laugh hearing his words. " Lead the way." Kris expressionlessly said. The student snorted lightly full of disdain and started moving.
