Chapter 3

1931 Words
Audrey It's been two days since I was locked up in my room without food or water. My stepmother's intention is clear to me now. It's either I die while being stubborn or choose the part she desires. The thought of taking my own life would have been a better option if I had not been caught and tied up. I coiled my body together as hunger gnawed at my stomach. At this rate, I would become a lost cause if I don't accept my fate. But how can I sleep with a man old enough to be my grandfather? Why do I have to be the one to clear the debts I don't owe in the first place? My thoughts went blank when I heard the sound of the door unlock. Two men and a maid walk in first, followed by my stepmother. The evil witch has come to provoke me just for her benefit. But I have made up my mind to remain adamant. "Silly girl, I know you think being a rebel will save you from the duty you owe our family. But I will have to break it down to you again, you have no choice," she said looking at her perfectly manicured fingers. I remained stiff and silent. Holding my shaky breath. "You will eat and get prepared to meet Mr. Roderick. I will personally take care of that. so make sure you satisfy the old man. And if possible make him clear of the debts," she muttered with a calmness that irked me. "Give her the food. I hope you learn your lesson after this. You will always be a nobody," she emphasized with a cynical smile. I tried so hard not to eat the food she had prepared but the maid that came with her forced my mouth open and pushed the food down my throat. "Good girl, eat as much as you want because what you are about to do requires a lot of energy," she added before cackling like a witch. After I was force-fed, she made me drink a glass of wine. Two minutes later, I felt dizzy and hot. My vision became blurry and my legs were weak, unable to move. "Carry her to the car. We are leaving now," I heard her commanding voice. Then some hands lifted me up from my bed. I slowly lost consciousness and was taken to a strange place not of my will. The next time I opened my eyes, I found myself in a dark room that reeked of alcohol. I tried to move but my body was too heavy and the hotness I felt before began to kick in. I began to cry wishing that it would stop because the feeling was unbearable. "Help me," I mumbled uncertain of who I was talking to. I could make out a figure standing in front of me but it was only black that I could see. The figure descended on me, prying my legs apart and muffling my cry with its kisses. "Please...." I trailed off as a sharp pain cut through my insides. I couldn't scream or move because everything happened so fast. The thrust, the pain, everything was like a heavy anchor resting on my shoulders. All this for a debt I didn't owe. Once the man on top of me was done satisfying himself, I closed my eyes and let my tears run down my cheeks. "Don't cry," he mumbled surprising me instantly. "I won't leave you, Margaret," he said and I felt worse than ever. He thought I was someone else. So this was a mistake? My stepmother mentioned an old man but from the looks of it, the man who had made out with me was young. Is this supposed to be a miracle? Should I be happy about this, when the most precious thing I have has been taken away from me? There was no need to ponder on the past anymore. The deed has already been done and I have nothing left but an empty soul. My eyes grew heavy and slowly I drafted to sleep feeling pain and hate in my heart. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• The next morning, I woke up and memories of last night flooded into my head. Shame and regret became my pillar as I turned to the man who had taken away my virginity. Covered in sheets, handsome and young, the same person who had called me by another name. I shouldn't blame him because he didn't know who I was and how I got into his room. He would probably think of me as an imposter who climbed into his bed when he wakes up. In order to avoid that, I quietly got out of his bed, thankfully, my clothes were intact and the pain in between my legs was gone. Without hesitation, I ran out of his room and found my way out of the hotel. Some group of men in black stood by the entrance which seemed suspicious to me. I had a feeling that they are the men from two days ago. They probably might be looking for me. I sight my stepmother come down from a car looking frustrated and angry. Truly there was a mistake, the man I spent the night with was not the man as she planned. Luck must be on me for this kind of twist to occur. I take another route and escape from the hotel never looking back until I was far from it. I trekked down to the main bridge facing half of the city. The first time I came here was with my mom. She stood at the far end and smiled at me while a stranger took a photo of her. "Mom, I don't think I can bear this anymore. Can I join you up there? Dad has chosen his family and I am all alone down here. Ma, I miss you so much," I cried, looking up to the sky as I complained of my affliction. I closed my eyes, ready to make my final decision until I heard a loud scream. "Someone help me! Thief!" I tried to mind my business but the woman's cry for help got to me. Taking the second option in my head, I ran to the woman in need. "Stay away from here!" I screamed, attacking the man who was way bigger than me. It was the least I could do since I was nothing compared to him. The end result of struggling with him got me a blow on my belly. He got frightened and ran off, abandoning the purse he wanted to steal. The old lady ran to my aid before I lost consciousness. "Are you sure she is alright, doctor?" I heard strange voices. "She is alright. You have to take care of her and make sure she doesn't do anything dangerous." A male voice said followed by departing footsteps. Once I fully regained my vision, I made a sound that got the woman's attention. "Oh, thank God. You are finally awake. Let me call the doctor," she hurriedly muttered but I stopped her before she could move an inch. "No. Please, where am I ?" I asked looking at her strangely. "You are at the hospital my dear. While you were trying to help me, that wicked thief knocked you out. If you had not showed up, I would have been robbed on that lonely bridge," she explained and I recurred the incident. "Thank you for bringing me to the hospital. But I have to leave. The hospital is too expensive for me to afford," I said trying to get out of the hospital bed but she stopped me. "No, you have nothing to worry about. As my savior, I have decided to serve you and provide for all your needs," she stated and I looked at her confused. "How do you mean? What I did was nothing but a simple act of kindness. How can you decide to provide for all my needs? I am a homeless person and not even related to you," I explained, she smiled, taking my hand in her's. "You are a blessed child, my dear. An old woman like me would love to have a daughter who can accompany through my last days. I might not know you story but meeting you has changed my perspection about life. There are still people with good heart in this world and I have come to terms that helping you is all I want to do," she said genuinely. I was shocked by her proclamation and her desire to help a stranger like me. Seeing how persistent she was, I agreed to her terms and let her take care of me. Days turned to weeks, and I remained under her care. She was a lone woman without a family. I discovered that her husband and children died in a plane crash which made her go to the bridge that day. And her name was Grace Ortega, a beautiful woman in her early sixties. She had desired for what I was desperate for but we ended up meeting each other and have become each other's solace. We were currently at a golf club, playing with a group of people we met at the place. After playing for a while, we took a break at a lounge. "So tell me, Audrey. Have you thought about what you would like to do? I will have my secretary assist on whatever career you wish to choose," Grace instigated as she wiped the sweat on her forehead. "I have thought about it and I wish to become a model," I replied. "A model," she repeated and I nodded in response. "Alright, I will have my secretary find a place where you can train and pursue your dream. If there is anything else you need let me know," she agreed, supporting my decision without questions. I felt glad to have a free spirited person like her and hoped that someday, I will be able to thank her enough for accepting me. "How about we play another round? It would be fun if we beat the other team," she suggested and I agreed with her even though I was feeling a little sick. I got up to move but my legs gave up on me and I fell limp to the ground blanking out instantly. The next time I regain my consciousness, I found myself at a hospital. "She awake doctor," I heard Grace's alarmed voice. The doctor came over to me and did a quick check before presenting a file to Grace. "Congratulations, ma. Your daughter is two weeks pregnant," he announced and we were both shocked. "How is that possible?" She asked, looking more confused than I was. But I knew the truth and decided to tell her my story. After she learned of my past, she promised to protect me and help me raise my baby until I have the power to seek revenge on those who treated me badly. On hearing her promise to me, I swore within me to grow into a powerful woman and get back at my family for what they did to me.
