Chapter One - The Revelation
Alice's POV Happy birthday to me! I flutter my eyes open and jerk off the bed as I feel a sense of excitement wash over me. A broad grin grew on my face as I walked towards the vanity mirror and gazed at my reflection. My twentieth birthday is today. I have always looked forward to this day. A party with my friends! My ringing tone blares out loud, startling me and jolting me out of my thoughts. I pause to release a loud yawn as I sluggishly drag my feet towards the bedside table where my phone is lying carelessly. I release a heavy sigh and just as I attempt to pick up my phone, I feel a sudden jolt of electricity course through my veins. I grit my teeth and a sudden memory of someone, something flashes through my mind. A wolf. I furrow my brows in confusion and shudder at the thought. Wolves did not exist here in Southside city, which means I have never come across a wolf before. I must be imagining things, because why would a wolf appear in memories? I wave off the thought and gaze at the caller ID. It is my best friend, also known as the party machine of Southside college, Jake Drake. The call eventually goes off, so I take it as my queue to return the call and ask him about the party. I picked up my phone and dialed Jake's number. In less than a minute. His loud voice rings out through my phone speakers. "Happy Twentieth Birthday Alice!" I can not help but chuckle at the excitement in his town. It is my own birthday, yet I am not even as excited as Jake is. I roll my eyes at him even though I know he can not see him. "How are the party preparations going Jake? Nothing, absolutely nothing must go wrong." I slowly emphasized my words. I hear Jake chuckle over the phone. "Venue set, booze is intact, everything is going to go well Alice. Just trust me on this one," Jake says. I find it difficult to trust Jake when it comes to preparation. Although he might be a party machine, he is still horrible at planning things. Jake procrastinates a lot. He might reassure you that everything is in place, but that might be a lie. Maybe I should have just asked my boyfriend, Alex, to help me with planning. "What are you thinking about?" Jake's voice interrupted me. I nod my head and hastily take it as a hint to reply to him. "Yeah, nothing actually. Just this weird feeling I am getting about my twentieth birthday." I said, acknowledging this weird sense I was feeling deep down inside of me. The feeling of uneasiness. Maybe it is because I do not trust Jake. I waved off the feeling and drifted my attention back to Jake. "You do not have to worry about that at all. Just do your job well and make sure the party is a blast!" I yelled at him. "Ayee Captain." Jake hangs up. I sigh heavily, my eyes dart towards the direction of the clock. I opened my mouth wide in shock as I slowly read the time out loud. "8:35 am." I gasped loudly as I came to the realization that I was thirty-five minutes late for my first class this morning. Without wasting any more time, I hastily scurried towards the direction of the bathroom for a quick shower. After that, I do not have time to put so much make-up on my face because of how late I am running. I change into casual clothes, reminding myself that the party is indeed going to be a blast. I scurried out of my room and I met my grandfather in the kitchen. He looks so deep in his thoughts that he does not notice my presence until I snatch the apple in his hand from him. "Hey Rowan, what are you thinking about?" I raised a brow at him. I paused to take a bite out of the apple. I watched his face drop and his shoulders slowly slump in defeat. On a more serious note, is he okay? "Happy birthday Alice." Rowan started. I wave that off and repeat my question but in different words. "You look very tired and bothered. If you have something on your mind, let us talk about it after school." I said and attempted to rush to the front door, but my grandfather grabbed my wrist, slightly pulling me back. "Rowan, I am late. We can talk about this when I am back or, better still, talk to Gran Gran until I return." I said. I gazed at the wall clock. The time is 8:50 am. "Oh, I am so going to be late!” "It is something important. Something that has to do with you." Rowan blurts out. I slowly break free from his grip, but my eyes remain on my grandfather. He looks serious, and I can tell he is worried too. Why? What is it that has got to do with me? "Follow me," Rowan said, and started to walk towards the direction of the living room. I hastily follow him there, and I meet Gran Gran sitting on the couch and gazing at the blank TV screen. She looks deep in her thoughts, and it has got me worried. What is wrong with them? Why do they look so sad? I gulp a lump down my throat as Rowan joins Gran gran on the couch. Gran gran notices my presence, a sad smile forms on her face as she says "Happy Twentieth Birthday, baby." "Yeah, thanks, but I would like to know what the hell is going on with you both?" I asked. "Alice, the truth can no longer stay hidden. Especially now that you are twenty years old. You need to recognize the lineage you come from." Rowan started. My entire body shakes as Rowan speaks "You are a werewolf Alice."
