Chapter One: The Ember in the Ashes
The forge’s heat beat against Kael’s face like a hammer striking steel. Sweat soaked his tunic, and his arms ached from hours of pounding iron into shape. Sparks danced like fireflies in the air, but none lit up the dread that had nestled in his gut since dawn. Old Garric, the master blacksmith, squinted at Kael’s work. “Too thin at the base. You’re making swords, not feathers.” Kael grimaced and brought the blade back to the fire. “Yes, master.” Outside, the village of Alderhold stirred slowly to life. Chickens clucked, carts rolled on gravel, and children’s laughter echoed in the morning mist. To Kael, the world seemed too peaceful—too normal—for what he had seen in the woods three nights ago. A shadow that moved without sound. Eyes like molten silver. And a voice that whispered “He is chosen.” At first, he thought it a dream—until the mark appeared on his forearm the next morning. A spiral of flame, faint as a brand beneath the skin, pulsed with a quiet warmth. He’d hidden it. Even now, wrapped in cloth beneath his sleeve, it seemed to glow with its own memory of fire. “Kael!” Garric barked, pulling him back from thought. “You daydream like a court minstrel. What’s gotten into you lately?” Before he could answer, a sudden commotion erupted in the village square. Shouts. Screams. The clang of bells. Kael dropped the hammer and rushed outside. A crowd had gathered around a crumbled rider, his cloak torn, face bloodied. His horse, a grey destrier, collapsed in the dust beside him. “Bandits?” someone asked. “No,” the rider wheezed. “Worse… they came from the ruins… darkness with claws… they seek the Ember…” Kael froze. Ember. The rider’s hand shot forward, seizing Kael’s wrist. His dying breath was a whisper of fire. “You… are the spark… protect the Flame…” Then, silence. All eyes turned to Kael as the wind blew the rider’s cloak open. On the cloth: the sigil of the Order of the First Flame—a symbol not seen for over a century. And then the mark on Kael’s arm began to burn.
