Sovereign of Strings narrates the legendary journey of Evan Young, a youth from the kingdom of Arcadia on the continent of Aerion. Born with only eight fingers – initially seen as a "defect" – Evan undergoes extraordinary encounters and rigorous training to ultimately become the "Sovereign of Strings," a master straddling the realms of magic and martial arts.
The story begins on a scorching summer afternoon outside the Mage Guild in Arcadia's capital, Lunaria. Quentin Shaw, an Amethyst-ranked Lute Magus from the mage sanctuary The Sanctum, leans on his wooden staff before the guild doors. Spotting the infant in Maya Leaf's arms, whose hands each lack a pinky finger, the old man's face flushes with excitement, his silver beard trembling: "Born with eight fingers... such talent truly exists!" For a Lute Magus, the pinky fingers are normally "f*******n fingers" during play; their congenital absence avoids interference, making it the perfect innate gift for mastering lute magic. Dismissing the concerns of Yale Leaf, Evan's grandfather and patriarch of the Bamboo Sect, Quentin Shaw takes Evan as his disciple, citing the principle that "the Innocent Heart Core can shatter all arts." He takes the boy to the Emerald Canopy bamboo forest outside Arcadia City to begin his training.
The Emerald Canopy is a secret realm formed by millennia-old green bamboo, where rustling bamboo tips create a natural sonic barrier. Evan spends sixteen years here. Each day is strictly divided: at dawn, he trains Bamboo Aura with Yale Leaf amidst the bamboo. Bamboo Aura progresses through Green Bamboo, Yellow Bamboo, and Purple Bamboo stages, each with nine tiers. Training involves mimicking the rhythm of bamboo growth, integrating the aura into his meridians. Yale Leaf often strikes Evan's acupoints with bamboo branches, his aged voice echoing: "Bamboo is hollow-jointed, blending strength and flexibility. Your aura must be like bamboo tips brushing wind – seemingly yielding, yet unbreakably resilient." The boy must run a hundred miles daily carrying twenty pounds of bamboo strips until his legs feel like lead, then practice whipping techniques using the Bisi silk cord wrapped around bamboo stalks, until faint yellow aura coalesces into a halo at his fingertips. Once, during training, Evan lost control of his aura and snapped three green bamboo stalks. Yale Leaf merely clapped and laughed: "Good! With such resilience, you can inherit the Bamboo Sect's legacy."
In the afternoons, Quentin Shaw instructs Evan in lute arts at a stone table before the bamboo hut. Lute Magi use instruments as conduits for psychic magic, their ranks corresponding to the seven prismatic colors. Quentin's "Innocent Heart Core" cultivation method demands absolute mental purity. "The lute heart must be like that of an untroubled infant, free of distractions, to resonate with the strings," the elder would say. Often, he had Evan sit alone before the hut at daybreak, dew still fresh, playing Green Water on the Spring Thunder lute. When the lute notes merged with the bamboo forest's sighing wind, Evan could see dewdrops resonating with the sound waves, forming crimson ripples that seeped into the soil to nourish bamboo roots. By age six, he could play Green Water flawlessly and had reached the third tier of Green Bamboo Aura (early Emerald rank). Once, his playing became so absorbed it resonated with the bamboo spirits deep within the Emerald Canopy; myriad bamboo leaves trembled with emerald light. Quentin Shaw's pupils contracted: "This child's lute heart is truly innate! To commune with nature's spirits already... he will undoubtedly achieve greatness!"
During this time, Evan befriended Zander, a purple-haired youth also residing in the Emerald Canopy. Zander often sat alone atop bamboo stalks at dusk, his purple hair flying like fire in the wind, wielding a black iron staff capable of splitting bamboo trunks as thick as a bowl. They first met when Evan suffered a lute-induced qi deviation; Zander physically blocked the erupting sonic waves, his back bleeding yet seemingly unfazed, forging a bond of "life entrusted to life." Zander never spoke of his past but would silently leave washed bamboo shoots before Evan's hut when the boy returned late from training. Evan, in turn, would play Soothing Nurturing Melody to soothe Zander's aura. As the notes lingered, the tension in Zander's brow would ease. Pointing at the stars, Evan once vowed: "Brother Zander, if you ever face peril, Evan Young will protect you with his lute." Zander remained silent for a long moment before lightly tapping the stone table with his staff – his unique way of assent.
At sixteen, seeing Evan's Innocent Heart Core had reached the ninth grade, Quentin Shaw's eyes gleamed: "Your heart is pure as crystal, yet needs worldly experience to hone its edge." He sent Evan to study at the continent's premier institution, the Milan Institute.
