Chapter 2

3015 Words
When we arrived, she could already pick up the scent of blood in the air; among other things. She really hated coming to this place, it wasn’t even cause of her wolf color it was just the nuisance of having to deal with other side more or less.            “Haven,” he says, “Never heard of that club before.”                    “Doubt you have,” she says, “Rookie I think it would be better if you stay here for this one.”                    “You’re kidding me,” he says, “I’m your partner now, I’m supposed to learn from you and how the hell am I supposed to do that from the car.”                    “Your a rookie....you don’t know s**t yet and this ain’t the place to start,” she says, “So just stay here....and you know what just freaking stay here will ya. I don’t have time to play babysitter with your ass right now.”                    She gets out of the car and slams the door shut behind her; then she starts to walk towards the club. As usual she felt eyes on her like always, not only was being a black wolf taboo but being a cop on top of it just added to the hate. My position on the totem pole for some of the shifters and well a lot of the other underworld type was pretty at the bottom.                     In all honesty I could give a rat’s ass, I’ve worked my ass off to get where I am and nobody will take that away from me. No matter how hard they try.            “Well, well.....a pig in wolves fur or how’s that human saying go,” Leuric spoke as he looked to her as he stood near the doorway to the entry.            “Two words.....piss off,” she spoke as she walked past him and into the club where there was a packed house so to speak but some of the regular patrol was already there trying to keep the scene in check until her arrival.            “Detective Langstone, right,” this young sergeant spoke as he walked up to her with his notepad in hand.                    “Yeah, I’m Langstone,” she says, “What happened?”            “Well....the victim....over there. From what we can get from the so called witnesses is he was hitting on the assailant’s girl and I guess our guy has a real temper. It took five of us to restrain him and three pairs of cuffs,” he tells her as he points her to the corner where they have him sitting on the floor with two other patrol men watching over him.                    She could smell right off the bat why he was such a handful, he was a were-tiger. Their change is as aggressive as ours, if not more because they don’t have a shed of humanity when they take form and also their hormones push out the testosterone in the males especially in season makes it worse. Which by the way, things had been described to her that’s exactly what sounded like what had gone on.                    “Where’s the girlfriend,” she asked.                    “In the corner,” he says, “She’s terrified at the moment. Barely got a few words out of her, with all the crying she’s been doing.”            “I’ll talk to her,” she says simply as she walks over and takes a seat next to her.            The girl was young and human none the less, how stupid could he have been. She takes another tissue from the box in front of her and hands it to the girl.            “Here,” she says as she looks to the girl, who sniffles before she takes the tissue and wipes at her mascara stained face as the tears just fell.                    “So, what’s your name,” she asked her.                    *Sniffles with tears still falling down her cheeks.*            “Jessie...Jessie Conners,” the young girl spoke still shocking up.            “Jessie.....My name is Detective Langstone,” she says, “You can call me, Eva. Your boyfriend....how long have you two been going out.”            “Well....I....,” she stuttered slightly and she noticed something in the girl’s eyes.             “Jessie....I’m going to ask you a question and you don’t have to answer me....Hell you can just nod if you want to if it helps you,” she says, “Your boyfriend....you know he’s different don’t you. He’s got a whole different side than this, doesn’t he?”            She noticed the girl hesitate and she leans over as she spoke in a soft tone once more asking the same question.                    “He’s different isn’t he,” she asked her.                    “Um....well he,” Jessie spoke.                    She looked over to the girl as she closed her eyes and let her blue wolven eyes show before; then she closed them again as they reverted back. The girl was taken back a bit but almost a feel of relief came over her.            “Your like Tim.....you a,” Jessie spoke.            “Shhh.....yes I’m like him…a different breed but I am like him. So you can trust me,” she says, “Has Tim ever acted like that before? Has he ever shown aggressiveness like that towards anybody, even yourself.”            “No, Tim is such a mellow guy. That’s one of the things I love about him so much because he is such a sweet guy,” she says, “Tim never would have ever attacked that guy just for talking to me. He was fine, until the guy shoved him and then he just went off like I’ve never seen before.”            “He shoved him,” she asked.            “Yeah in his chest and then he just went off in just like a few seconds. Honestly it was like something just snapped in him that he never knew,” Jessie told her.            “So he’s never been aggressive or anything like that towards you,” she asked once more.            “Tim, he’s one of the sweetest guys you will ever know.....he didn’t hurt that guy on purpose,” Jessie spoke out almost clinging to her jacket sleeve.            “Alright, just try to calm yourself down and I’ll have a talk with him,” she says as she motions for one of the cops standing around to come over to her.            “Yes detective,” he spoke.                    “Take Jessie home....she’s not needed here anymore and there’s no reason stressing her out further,” she told him.            “Yes, Ma’am,” he spoke as he helped the girl up and she stood up as well.                    “Please....look after him....this wasn’t Tim’s fault,” Jessie spoke once more as she looked to her and left with the cop.            She walked over to Tim, he was watched over by two other cops and they gazed at her slightly before one of them spoke, “Detective....be careful it took quite a few of us to detain him.”            “Yeah, I’m sure it did,” she says as she walks past them both and the kid, well he was older but to her he just felt like a kid.            “Tim.....right,” she spoke.            He looked up to her as his eyes were going back and fourth between his were form and his normal.            “Tim....can you understand me,” she asked.            He nodded.             “You two can leave, I can handle him,” she spoke with her back to him.            “But detective,” he spoke.            “Just go see if the techs need help moving the body or something will ya,” she spoke as she looked to the kid.            “Ok, detective but be careful of the guy he’s dangerous,” he spoke before he left with the other cop.            “Tim...Tim....try to take some deep breaths and control yourself,” she spoke as she grabbed some gloves out of her pocket and slipped them on.            “I’m....try...ing but....it’s so...har...d....that guy....he...did something,” he spoke in a ragged breath.             “Shit....,” she thought as she knew what happened just by the way he was trying to speak.            “Tim....your girlfriend Jessie....she seems like a sweet girl. That took a lot of guts to tell her about yourself,” she says as she starts looking the guy over until she found a tear in his shirt that had some blood on it that was mixed with his and the scent of something else.            “I love her....I never wanted her to see me like that,” he says, “She was so scared.”            “There you go....your getting control back,” she says, “Keep talking to me….Tim.”            She examined the cut across his skin on his upper chest as she dabbed her fingertips in a bit of the blood and brought it up slightly to her nose.            After only a few sniffs, she says, “Anthro-Toxin.”            “Anthro-Toxin,” he repeated.            “What happened to you.....was a set up by a hunter,” she says, “The guy you killed by accident.”            “You didn’t have a chance with what he slipped into your bloodstream,” she says, “Your in heat and the toxins, basically blew you into a rage. It’s a trick hunters use on us, so they can take us out when were not thinking clearly. Anthro-toxin, with this much stuff pouring through your bloodstream your lucky to be able to speak.”            “Hunter....Why would a hunter....want me....I’ve never hurt a human in my entire life,” he spoke as he looked to her and she could see he was telling the truth.            “I can read people’s bullshit a mile long but I know your telling the truth,” she says, “From what I can tell, the hunter must of been a newbie. No vet hunter, would slip this s**t into a shifter in heat unless they had back up or knew what they were doing.”            “Hunter,” she heard the term behind her spoken by someone that had no business or reason to be in that club when she already had given him strict instructions to stay in the car.            “What kind of hunter....what are you talking about,” he spoke and she looked at Tim as she shushed him.            She stood up as she glanced to him as she spoke, “Your a rookie....you don’t understand things around here that’s why I told you to stay in the car.”            “I can’t learn a damn thing if I’m not in the investigations,” he spoke out to her and she took a step forward in aggravation only to dig her fingertips into her palm as she tightened her fist near her hip.            “You want to stay on even the slightest bit of my good side....you will back the hell down,” she says, “Go back to the car and wait for me.”            “This is bullshit,” he spoke as he turned and left the scene as as she took a breath to calm herself down.                    She knelt back down near the kid as he spoke, “I didn’t mean to hurt the guy....one minute we were talking and the next thing.....I don’t know even how to explain it. Everything just went dark, it was like something took over and I could see it and feel it but I had no control over my body.”            “Since hunters....are still around. An old practice of theirs was a anthro-toxin they created....that produces the same effect the moon does and our hormones mixed together when we transform and basically blows them out of proportion to the point where were not us anymore,” she says, “But our shifter form; our most primal instincts are the only thing we feel at that time when we’re dosed. Your mother or father, who is the shifter because I smell human in you as well. Were you never told about hunters before….let alone how to spot them or suppressants for when your near heat to keep yourself in check.”            “No,” he says, “I was adopted into a human family. My parents were killed in some kind of car accident they told me. So I never knew what I was until one night when I transformed out of anger and I woke up in our wooded back yard naked. I started looking up books, asking around and I found a few sites to talk to people about being a shifter.”            “You know theirs a lot more then just us,” she spoke as she looked to the kid.            “Their is,” he asked her.                    “Yeah....theirs a lot more,” she says, “Vampires, ghouls, warlocks and demons....their is a hell of a totem pole that humans don’t even know about and couldn’t understand if they tried. Except for hunters, they think their on the top and we should all be wiped out; every last one of us.”            “Jesus, I swear.....I never would of hurt that guy...hunter or not,” he says, “I’ve never raised my fist to anybody. I swear, ya gotta believe me.”            She took a light breath as she slid off the latex gloves as she glanced to the floor slightly before she looked to him as she spoke, “Kid, I actually do believe you. You’ve got that to stupid of a honest look right now to pull any kind of bullshit on me even if you tried.”            “What am I gonna do,” he says as the guy started to cry but made no noise of it as people and police were talking around him.            “I’ve got an attorney, who owes me a favor. I can make a call to him and he will help you out,” she says and kneels down once more as she looks to him. “Now I will make this call for you but if you screw me over and I find out about it down the road. I will track your ass down and put you down myself. Do you understand me?”            “Thank you....thank you so much.....Detective....            “Detective Langstone,” she says as she stood up and smoothed out her jacket slightly as she looked to him.             “Listen when they start asking you questions. Say you want to speak to your lawyer....his name is Dexter Erins’....give him the name Eva and he will get you through your case,” she says, “He’s human....but he’s not biased against our kind and he’s a pretty decent guy, he will get you through this I guarantee it.”            She went to walk away from him but he stopped her as he says, “Not that I’m not grateful and I am beyond belief but why are you so willing to help me.”            She took a breath as she turned as she looked to him as she says, “Because....I was exactly like you growing up except I was fortunate enough to be giving to a man; that was kind of enough to explain to me how the world works for us an how to blend in. Everybody deserves that one shot....don’t f**k it up kid. I’m not the type to usually help others out I just usually put them behind bars but…..just don’t make me regret helping you out alright.”            “Detective Langstone,” he spoke once more.                    She looked looked back to him and he says, “Thank you and I promise this is the last time. You will ever see me again.”            “Smart words, kid.....smart words,” she spoke as she turned and walked over to the lead cop that had just finished talking to the Corner.            “Did he give you anything detective,” he asked her.                    “Enough,” she says, “Take him into processing the kid is already asking for his lawyer. So get it done.”            “Already....Jesus murderer’s these days think that’s the magic get out of jail free card for everything,” he says as he walks past her.            She sighed slightly as she rubbed the side of her temple slightly as she stood there as she thought. “Old man....your ways are rubbing off on me but I have to admit....it felt kinda good to help the kid. Like you helped me.”            She said as she looked to the kid one more time before she walked out of club and she was bombarded by Leuric and three others.            “I’m in a remotely good mood where you can still walk away with your dignity in check,” she says, “I’ve taken care of the kid and he wont cause any issues. But your dumbasses will if you try going against me in front of about a dozen human cops. So go a head give me your best shot....You better hope when you lay me out I’m down for the count. Cause when I get up….I will f**k everyone of you up and embarrass the hell out of you in the underworld community so badly you wish you were born human.”            One of them growls and goes after her and she growls in return as she grabs him by the wrist he’s throwing the punch. As she brings her leg up in a kick, dragging him down to his belly by kicking him in the back of the head. Still holding his wrist in her hand and his arm in a leg lock with her ankles pressing against his wind pipe, causing him to gasp.            “One step and I’ll put him in the hospital,” she said as she barred her fangs slightly. “Take two and I guarantee the morgue.”            The next thing she knew, she felt the cold feel of a silver blade run into her side and she snaps his arm in the process. The fight broke out instantly, she guarded herself the best she could; the basic unit that was outside ran over to help out and she felt herself being jerked back. She looked to see the rookies tall frame as he punched Leuric right in the face knocking him on his ass.            “Get this situation under control and get these guys processed to,” he spoke out as looked to the other officers.            “Yes sir,” they spoke out.            “Langstone, are you alright,” he spoke as he walked over to her and she could feel her own warm blood run down the side of her pants.            “I’m fine....just get away from me,” she spoke as she stepped away from him as she slightly staggered against the wall.            “Shit....silver,” she thought as she held her side and the blood was dripping through her fingertips.            “I need to.....            Were her last words before everything went dark around her and she remembers falling but their was no pain when she hit the ground.            “Eva,” she heard her name being called and that was the last thing she remembered before their was nothing but darkness and silence around her.            In the wagon that was called to take the larger lot to the station, Leuric along with the few others that were with him at the time.            “I can’t believe the bitch....had the nerve to brake Lincoln’s arm,” he says, “Somebody needs to put that mutt in her f*****g place.”            “Don’t worry I got my knife in her before....that little rookie of her’s barged his way into our fun,” Lincoln’s brother spoke as he smirked just showing a bit of his fangs. “Pure silver....ain’t gonna put her down but that b***h is going to be in as much pain as she put my brother in.”            A few nearly barked out laughing as they sat in that caged wagon waiting to be taken down town to be processed at the district.
