Chapter 3

She groaned when she felt tugging at her skin and she opened her eyes slightly as she didn’t recognize the place she was in at the time.            “Your awake,” he says, “You lost a lot of blood and my place was closer than the hospital. So before you bite my head off or give me a serious ripping. I just didn’t want to lose my first partner on the first day. I’ll get a curse complex at the station if that happens and I don’t need that.”            “Only....reason you’ll get that is staying partners with me,” she spoke as her vision became a little less hazy as she turned her gaze slightly at him.            “Why....,” was the only word he asked her as he looked up to her and then back to stitching up her side.            He took a breath as he spoke, “You and I both have the same kind of eyes.”            “I highly doubt that,” she spoke.            “I was in the military....a medic before I decided to trade in my fatigues for the blues,” he spoke as finished up sewing her up and wiping the area off then patching her up.            “I saw enough blood shed, lost brothers and sisters in arms,” he says and then he looks up to her as he spoke. “So yeah, we do have the same kind of eyes even if you don’t agree with me.”            She looked at him slightly as she spoke, “You really should ask if you can be partnered with someone else.”            “Why are you so hell bent against being partnered with someone,” he says as he takes the bloody latex gloves off and tosses them in the trash.            “Because its better for anybody that tries to get around me that they just stay away,” she spoke as she got up to quickly and the pain shot up her side as she fell back on the bed as she felt warm liquid trickle down her side as she held her side.            “You dumbass...let me see,” he says as he grabs her wrist and she nearly growls out but she tightens up slightly as she loosen her grip and lets go.            “Shit....you tore a few of your stitches open,” he spoke as he grabbed some more gauze as he pressed it against the wound.            “Hold it down, I’ll be right back,” he gets up and walks out of the bedroom and comes back a few minutes later with a couple of beers in hand.            “I don’t have anything for the pain,” he says, “So this will have to do.” He says as he hands her one and puts the other one on the bedside stand for himself.            “I can handle the pain,” she said through grounded teeth and when he took the gauze away as he looked to the wound. “Luckily only a couple of them popped but I think its better to remove them and re-stitch the area to make sure these will stay. Think you can handle it?”            “I’ve handled worse,” she spoke as she sniffed at the bottle slightly and then she took a swig from the bottle.            “It’s not the best beer but its not to terrible either....at least to me but it will do the job while I fix these,” he says as he grabbed another thing of gloves and goes to fix the wound.            She grinds her teeth together and takes another drink when the pain sets in again. It wasn’t even the wound itself it was the silver coursing through the wound that was still burning like hell through her blood stream.             “So you gonna tell me what the hell that scene was about in front of the club or am I going to get the rookie bullshit treatment again,” he asked her as he stitched the wound again this time making the stitches a bit tighter.             “Just some guys that I know,” she tells him simply.            “So do all your friends usually try killing you,” he spoke as he looks up to her slightly and she gazed at him once as she spoke simply.            “I don’t have any friends or need them,” she says as she takes a drink from the bottle as she looks to the side.            “The rumors I heard about you.....were true it seems,” he spoke as he finished up the last stitch as he closed the wound off and snipped the edge.            He then patched up both sides with some dressing and tossed the gloves in the trash as he picked up the bottle of beer and took a long drink.            She holds her side as she tries to get up again but he stops her as he helps her up slowly to at least sit up and he propped a couple of pillows behind her to make her comfortable.            “What that I’m a real b***h,” she spoke simply as she closed her eyes as she took a breath and opened her eyes as she released the tense breath from her lips.                     “No, well....yeah b***h did come up in the rumor but your also strong and you try harder than anyone to see things through,” he says, “That’s why I wanted to be partnered with you. Actually I met your dad once, after I got out of the service and after hearing a few of his stories myself I knew I wanted to be a detective. He actually gave a few lectures to some of us when we got out of service and weren’t sure what are next step would be and well his words really stuck with me. So next thing I know I’m putting my name into the academy and the rest is pretty much history.”            She sighed slightly and even chuckled a bit when she thought of him as she spoke, “Old man, always did put his nose into every bodies business. I owe my life to him though so I know a bit about what you mean.”            “He’s your dad....I doubt he really would think you owe him your life,” he spoke as he took another sip of his beer.            She took a deep breath as she took another drip from the bottle as she looked to it slightly and then to him.            “Listen the old man was a real good guy and wanted the best for everyone,” she says, “His values.....well they were different then others and that got him killed.”            “What are you talking about,” he asked her.                    “Listen, come tomorrow your going to come in the morning and ask the Captain to reassign you to somebody else; maybe go to another district,” she spoke as she looked to the bottle again as she took another drink.            “What the hell are you talking about,” he spoke.            “Listen, I’m doing you a favor,” she says, “My district is dangerous and me more so. You’ll end up hurt or worse dead. You got a future, more so then the rest of us....myself included. Get out while you can.”            She got up slowly from the bed as she sat the empty bottle on the nightstand table near the bed as she got up slowly. He tried to stop her but she walked past him, only to stagger against the wall as she held her side.            “Langstone,” he spoke as he went to help her but she pushed him to the side a little harder then she meant to and he tripped back over his chair and hit the floor.            She grabbed her jacket and she looked to him and she says, “Sorry.”            The had been the last words she said to him before she noticed her keys on the small table near the door; grabbed them. Unlocked his door and shut it behind her as she left his house then walked to her car.             She unlocked the door, got in slowly and shut the door behind her as she put the keys in the ignition and left it there. Taking a breath she slammed her fists against the steering wheel a few times as she laid her head on the steering wheel.            “What the hell is wrong with me,” she thought as she slammed her fist against the steering wheel again.            She looked to his house and turned on the ignition and drove off down the street. It took her a few minutes to realize what street she was on and another half an hour to make it back to her house, the one that she grew up in that her dad left her. She drove up into the garage as she turned off the ignition and just sat back in her seat for a while before she got out of the car; then locked it up. She unlocked the door to the house and walked in closing it behind her and locked it back up.            She slid off her jacket as she nearly let out a feral growl as the wound burned even though it was closed as it was already healing from the inside but it was taking long because of the pure silver. That was one thing that the crappy movies got right about wolves, silver burns like a b***h and get stabbed with a knife of pure silver. Slows our healing, to like a slug and it burns like hell as the skin and muscles is drawling back together to heal itself.                     Tossing her coat over the back of the chair of small dining room table, she walks into the kitchen and opens up the fridge as she grabs a bottle of beer and closes the fridge door. She twisted the cap off and tossed it into the trash as she walked into the living room. Kicking off her shoes to the side, she grabs the tv controller and turns it on as she props up on the couch as she does a little channel surfing to get her mind off things.            Which was hard at the moment as her wound burned and that case at the club was still nagging the hell out of her. The old man use to tell her about stories about hunters still being around even in this time.            He use to call them a dying breed because our world had developed a way to work along the humans with out causing issues but their was still a few among the ranks of different species that thought either their kind or another’s species should be over the humans and wipe them off the face of the earth. Myself, personally I don’t give a damn; hell I don’t even know where I put myself in this whole process when I get down to really thinking about it.            She took a drink of her beer as she turned off the tv when she realized she was more focused on her thoughts then the tv, so she finished up her beer and just decided to call it a night. She walked out of the living room and trudged out up the stairs as she walked into her room. Unbuckling her jeans and sliding out of those and then she slid her shirt off slowly, biting her lower lip at the discomfort. She held her side slightly as she walked over to her bed and turned on the alarm; sliding under the covers after she was done. Laying on her other side, she looked out her window that she left open before she left for work. The moonlight was glowing on the darken floor slightly and after a while it lulled her into sleep as it always did since she was little.            Her sleeping that night was restless as usual, it had been a long time since she really slept sound. When she really thought about it sleeping soundly through the night might even have scared her more because normal just wasn’t apart of her life. She ended up waking before the alarm clock went off at 5:40 in the morning as she sat on the edge of the bed and turned off the alarm clock. Her side was still sore as she got up, walked through bedroom and into the connected bathroom as she turned on the light. She walked over to the vanity mirror as she pulled off the bandages and the stab wound was healed but was swollen from the silver. The wound was closed but it could still reopen for at least a day or so as long as she didn’t push it, which is hard for her since she never listens to anyone; herself included when it comes to taking care of herself.            She tossed the bloody bandages in the trash as she walked over to the shower and turned on the hot water. Sitting on the side of the tub for a moment, she laid her head in her hands for a bit as the last few days ran through her head. She was thinking about the kid from the case last night, having a new partner and the possibility of hunters showing up just made things more f*****g complicated.             She sat up as she thought, “No vet hunter, would be so foolish to hunt a were-tiger during their breeding season and especially with someone so young. That’s when they’re at their most dangerous. That was to much of a rookie move to be just an accident during a routine hunt, even if they were going for a kill. Something….just doesn’t add up. The whole thing just doesn’t seem right. There is something more to this….”            She got up and stripped down as she took a hot shower to try get her thoughts together but the whole thing last night still wasn’t settling right with her. Once she was finished with her shower, she picked out a pair of dark jeans, black sleeveless blouse and black underwear that matched her bra. She got dressed, slid on her boots brushed out her hair and braided it back. Once she was dressed, she grabbed her wallet and badge and then she slid her holster holding her gun in place, sliding it on her belt connected around her jeans.             Once she was dressed she walked downstairs, as she grabbed her jacket and slid it on with a slight growl as she put it on. She grabbed her car keys and was walking out the front door when she saw something she wasn’t expecting that actually took her back slightly as she stood in the doorway.            “You….,” she says and shook her head slightly. “Do you not know how to take orders or do you have a death wish or something? Cause if that’s the case your heading in the right direction. What the hell are you doing here? I told you…..            “Okay before you even start,” he says as he gets up front the corner of the front porch he was sitting on and stands up as he hands her a hot cup of coffee.            She looks at it for a moment and he says, “I didn’t know how you liked it so I just guessed. Black, sugar but not much.”            She took the cup of coffee as she brought it near her nose and sniffed it slightly as she took a drink. “It actually was how she liked it,” she thought.            “I know a pretty decent bodega on the corner of 30th street….that makes  good coffee,” he says as he takes a drink out of his own cup as it was a quiet for a few moments between them.            “If your trying to be a royal pain in my ass….it’s working,” she says, “The coffee is a nice touch but it doesn’t change s**t….what I told you….I meant every word last night. Go into the Captain’s office and ask to be reassigned to someone else….hell go to another station. You would be better off….believe me.”            “Sorry, it doesn’t work that way,” he says, “I’ve seen the others that work in our office and they look like a bunch of stuck up assholes. Not the kind of guys I’m in the mood to work with, also the Captain told me that if I wanted to learn the ropes properly you were the one who could teach me. Also he threaten to rip my ass a new one if I ever told you that, those were his words not mine.”            “Your bullshitting me right, the Captain really said that,” she spoke as she took a step out of her doorway as she walked over to him as she looked into his eyes.            His breathing was even and his eyes never left hers; he was actually telling her the truth.             “It’s hard to believe that crabby bastard actually said that,” she spoke as she closed her door and locked it behind her.             “He said you’re a real b***h to work with, pig-headed, ill-tempered, can’t keep her comments to herself and will start a fight at the drop of dime,” he says and she cuts him off.            “Son of b***h doesn’t hold back on the comments,” she spoke as she took another sip from the coffee cup with the guard around the cup.            “Well if you would let me finish,” he says, “He also said and I quote, “Rookie if you ever tell her this I will rip you a new one, from ass to head. She might be all of those but she is one of the hardest working detectives I have on my unit. Never gives up, relentless in finding the truth no matter if it puts herself in danger and would put her own life on the line to protect a innocent person in a instant. I just wish she put more faith in her worth. Wish I had more detectives with her dedication, not like the other little silver spoon little pricks I have in my unit.”            She couldn’t help as she nearly chokes on the coffee as she listened to him speak about the Captain.            “Okay, now you are really just trying to kiss my ass,” she spoke as she looked to him.            “Not my words, their his so take it up with him,” he says, “The b***h comment I can believe, you are a bit of a one but I can kinda understand why you are.”            “Highly doubt that,” she spoke with his last comment.            “You know for a rookie….you’re suppose to listen to your superior and do as your instructed,” she says to him.            “Yeah, well two things,” he says, “For one I’m two years older than you and for two….I don’t spook or give up….So were partners rather you like it or not.”            “For some reason I believe you when you say that….like gum on the button of my shoe,” she spoke as she took another drink from the cup.            “Thanks, I’ve gone from rookie to gum….what’s next,” he says, “s**t on the bottom of your tennis shoe.”            She sighed slightly as it mixed with a chuckle as she looked to him as she spoke, “Ok, you want to keep me as a partner. Theirs gonna be some rules and they are the none breaking type, Ok?”            “Alright,” he says as he takes a drink of his coffee.            “Theirs certain parts in this city, if a case occurs and I tell you to stay in the car….you stay in the car. No fighting, no asking why….just do what I ask,” she says as she looks to him.             “Okay what am I five or something if I’m your partner then I have to go out on the scene with you to help,” he says, “I’m no good to you in the car.”            “Actually your better for me if your in the car,” she says, “There are somethings in this world that you have no clue about and its better if you didn’t.”            “What the hell are you talking about,” he asks as he looks to her.            “Just….do what I ask alright,” she says, “Number 2 if you see something happen or hear me. Don’t come, don’t go looking for me just radio it in; alright.”            “Sorry can’t keep that promise,” he says, “Your my partner. If something happens I’m stepping in.”            “Then I’ll go to the Captain myself,” she spoke as she looked to him as she took another drink of the coffee.            “Why are you so hell bent on doing everything by yourself,” he spoke as he looked to her.            “It’s not for my protection,” she says as she walks down the steps of her front porch. “Its for your own.”            “My own,” he said as he stood there.            “Come on rookie, we’re gonna be late,” she says as she walks over to her car, unlocks it and gets in; just a few moments later the passenger door opens and closes behind him.            Once he was in, she started up the car and pulled out of the parking spot as she drove off down the street.            “You know, I don’t know most woman that are into the classics,” he spoke as he drank his coffee.            “This isn’t a classic….this is a piece of art that me and the old man restored,” she says, “It’s the only thing in this place that means the world to me.”            “She really is a thing of beauty,” he spoke as he glanced at her when hers was elsewhere.          “Yeah, she is,” she says as she pats the dashboard as she drove down the street back into the main part of the city as she drove to the station.
