The stench of wet soil, cheap detergent, and stale sweat clung to the walls of the packhouse basement like a second skin. Salem Andra Dechez wiped the back of her wrist across her forehead, smearing a streak of soot over her dirt-smudged face. Her muscles screamed in protest as she heaved another heavy sack of firewood across the damp floor. In the lower ranks of the Silverfang Pack, warmth was a luxury reserved for the elite. For orphans, outcasts, and those without a drop of high-status wolf blood, winter was just a slow execution, and summer wasn't much kinder. "Faster, Salem!" a sharp, shrill voice snapped from the doorway. Mina, one of the higher-ranking beta's favorites, stood crossing her arms with a sneer. "The Alpha’s estate requires everything to be spotless before the inspection tonight. If a single speck of dust is found on the grand staircase, you’ll be spending the night outside during the shift change." Salem kept her head down, her long, tangled dark hair falling forward to shield the hot flash of humiliation burning in her cheeks. "Yes, Mina," she murmured, her voice raspy from hours of swallowing dust. She didn't dare fight back. In this pack, a low-born human-passing female with a dormant, weak wolf spirit had no voice, no rights, and certainly no protection. Her parents had died leaving nothing but debts and a tainted family name, leaving Salem to inherit a lifetime of servitude. Hours later, after scrubbing the endless marble floors of the main hall until her fingertips bled, Salem was ordered to haul the final batch of waste bins toward the massive incinerator gates at the back of the compound. The night air outside was biting, sharp against her thin, worn-out tunic. Above her, the crescent moon hung low, pale and indifferent. She paused for a fraction of a second, breathing in the wild scent of pine and approaching storm, wishing—just for a fleeting moment—that she could run away into the dark woods and never look back. Vroom. A low, guttural roar sliced through the quiet night, vibrating straight through the soles of Salem's boots. Before she could even turn her head, twin beams of piercing, predatory headlights blinded her. A fleet of sleek, matte-black luxury vehicles tore through the wrought-iron gates of the estate, moving with an aggressive, untouchable authority. Leading the pack was a custom obsidian hypercar that practically screamed danger. The cars came to a sudden, screeching halt right in front of the main receiving archway. Guards in heavy tactical gear scrambled out instantly, their eyes flashing a warning amber in the dark. But Salem was frozen. One of the heavy trash bags slipped from her numb fingers, hitting the asphalt with a dull, echoing thud right in the middle of the private driveway. Her heart leaped into her throat. Stupid. So stupid. The door of the lead vehicle slowly opened. A pair of custom Italian leather shoes stepped out first, followed by long, powerful legs clad in impeccably tailored dark trousers. The man who emerged stood tall, cutting an imposing, terrifying silhouette against the glare of the headlights. Gazero Ryder Wolfvad. Even from yards away, the sheer suffocating weight of his aura pressed down on Salem's chest, making it hard to breathe. He was the billionaire tycoon who owned half the corporate syndicates in the city, and the ruthless shadow alpha whose name alone made veteran warriors tremble. He didn't just walk; he stalked, radiating a cold, untouchable menace that commanded absolute silence. Gazero stopped in his tracks. His sharp, jawline tightened as his gaze swept across the courtyard—and then, his eyes locked onto the messy, dirt-stained girl standing frozen beside a pile of garbage. For a second, the entire world seemed to hold its breath. Gazero’s nostrils flared. A sudden, dangerous shift rippled through the air—a primal, electric current that hit him like a physical blow. His eyes, usually pools of dead, icy obsidian, flashed violently with a brilliant, blinding shade of molten gold. The terrifying beast deep within his chest, dormant and unresponsive for years, violently slammed against its cage, roaring a single, deafening word that defied logic, status, and reason: Mine.
