••• Isabella’s POV •••
I didn’t really know what my mom’s new pack was called, but she had sent me a message a long time ago for its address.
It took me nearly two days to reach the pack, and I felt my jaw drop to the floor when I reached the main gate.
Even from outside, the pack looked huge. The Grey Dusk Pack was nothing compared to this…pack!
“Who are you?” a warrior standing guard at the massive gate asked me with suspicion when I was still gaping at the area beyond the gate.
I swallowed nervously. Was my mom really here?
“State your business or be gone,” another warrior said impatiently. “We do not entertain beggars here.”
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry because I did look like a beggar at this point. I hadn’t stopped to bathe or change my clothes. I also hadn’t eaten anything because I wanted to reach my mom’s pack as fast as possible.
Straightening myself as much as I could despite my exhaustion, I told them with what I hoped was a tone that was fit to be the daughter of their Luna. “I am here to see Luna Liliana.”
The two guards shared a look before eyeing me, and one of them sneered, “Do you think anyone can just meet our Luna?”
“Just tell Luna Liliana that her daughter is here, okay?” I couldn’t hide my exhaustion anymore.
“Luna never told us she had a daughter,” the guard stated, which felt like a punch to my gut. Mom never even acknowledged me to her new family? This made me angry.
“Then just tell her,” I snapped. “If she said she doesn’t have a daughter from her ex-mate, I will leave.”
I knew I looked confident when I said those words, but if Mom didn’t acknowledge me, then I had to think of another place to stay. All I knew was that I couldn’t go back to the Grey Dusk Pack anymore.
The guards looked at each other again before one of them did a mindlink, I think, because not long after, an older, quite handsome he-wolf wearing a grey suit came to the gate and asked the guards to open the massive double gate to let me pass.
I let out a breath of relief. At least Mom would let me stay here for now. But then another thought entered my mind, which soured my mood. Of course, her mate would know that she had a daughter.
An Alpha from a pack this huge wouldn’t just take a mate without investigating their mate’s past. So, it didn’t mean that Mom wanted me here.
“I am Beta Dylan, the former Alpha’s Beta,” the man who came to get me introduced himself.
“Oh, I’m Isabella,” I replied. I wanted to shake his hand, but I decided against it as I hadn't washed my hands since leaving the Grey Dusk Pack.
“I know,” he chuckled, and started walking toward a mansion, which I assumed was the pack house.
Then some of his words hit my mind. I turned my head to see him. “What do you mean by the former Alpha’s Beta?” I asked with curiosity. “Has the Alpha of the pack changed?”
Beta Dylan’s eyes danced with amusement. “You don’t know anything about this pack, do you?”
I felt my cheeks pinken. “Umm… I came from a small and remote pack, so I don’t really know anything about other packs other than those around ours.”
Beta Dylan laughed but assured me it was fine. “Don’t worry, since you are the former Luna’s daughter, you will find out about everything soon. And to answer your question, yes, the Alpha had stepped down from his position a few years ago.”
“Ahh… Okay.” I nodded, understanding the situation. Then the son must be the new Alpha now. “Is the new Alpha also staying here?”
Beta Dylan c****d his head, and answered simply, “Sometimes.”
Alrighhttt… Since he wanted me to learn about the pack by myself, then I wouldn’t ask him too many questions. But I was grateful he seemed friendly enough and also welcoming.
We stepped into the pack house, and I was blinded momentarily by how luxurious it was - a white interior with a mixture of gold, done in a tasteful manner, and not tacky at all.
Before I could look around some more, Beta Dylan led me to the second floor, and I noticed even the hallway was luxurious. He stopped in front of a double door and opened it.
I peeked from behind him and was floored to see a huge bedroom with two more doors inside it. The bedroom was nearly the size of my pack house at the Grey Dusk Pack.
“The former Luna asked me to place you here,” he said with a pleasant smile. “There is an ensuite bathroom and wardrobe for you to put your things in.”
I looked at my small backpack and felt embarrassed, but I still thanked him for getting me and for leading me here.
He nodded at me and turned to leave, but I stopped him. “Do you know where Luna Liliana is?”
“She’s going to come to you soon,” he said, and since it felt like Mom would take her time to see me, once again, there was no use in asking Beta Dylan about it anymore.
“Thank you,” I thanked him again, and he left me to survey the room.
The bedroom was more like a…studio apartment? It had couches and a TV mounted on the wall opposite the bed.
I eyed the large bed longingly since it looked so soft, but as I hadn’t washed myself for two days, I decided to take a shower first.
The first door I opened turned out to be a walk-in wardrobe, which was still triple the size of my bedroom at the Grey Dusk Pack.
I wondered why my mom thought I would need to have a wardrobe this big, or maybe the rooms in this pack house were all this big.
When I opened the bathroom door, I quickly took off my clothes and nearly sobbed at how great the water pressure felt, as did the feeling of finally being cleaned again.
Just as I finished my shower and put on my clothes, the bedroom door opened, and I saw my mom coming in.
“Mom-” I smiled at her, but faltered because she looked like she wasn’t happy to see me. After seven years of not seeing me, she looked at me with resignation in her eyes.
Mom grabbed my forearm and whispered-yell, “What are you doing here?”
“I needed to get away because Steven tried to assault me,” I replied in the same hushed tone.
Mom let my arm go and pinched the bridge of her nose before finally looking at me, but her gaze was still anything but welcoming.
How could someone else, aka Beta Dylan, be more welcoming than my own mother?
“Alright, you can stay here,” she said, then warned me, “but remember that I used to be the Luna of the pack, and my second chance mate was an Alpha of the pack. You will need to watch how you behave in the pack.”
A bitterness welled up in my heart. This was no more different than when I was at the Grey Dusk Pack. I always needed to be careful of how I acted.
Now you know why I hated my mom? She didn’t try hard enough to get custody of me when she divorced my father, and now this. Sometimes I wondered if I was truly her child.
Suddenly, her expression shifted, and she approached me, whispering in my ear in a very low tone, “Your 18th birthday is coming soon, right?”
I just nodded in response.
“Remember what I told you about what you need to do when you go into heat?” Her voice turned even softer because she had told me this was a secret only the two of us knew, and no one else should know.
“Yeah.” I nodded again.
“Please tell me you still have the inhibitor with you.” This time, she sounded like she was… Begging? Fearful?
I reached inside my backpack and showed it to her.
“Oh, good,” she breathed a sigh of relief. “You always have to bring it with you everywhere because you don’t know when your heat will strike. And I will create more for you.”
I didn’t really know the real reason why I needed the inhibitor because every time I asked her, she answered vaguely. I guessed I would find out the answer myself when the time came.
Unfortunately, my stomach suddenly growled during this important talk.
“I haven’t eaten for two days, what do you expect?” I shrugged when my mom narrowed her eyes at me.
“Since I need to save face, I have to feed you,” she said like I was a dog and not her daughter, and I hated her even more. “Let’s go to the dining room, and I’ll ask the Omega to prepare something for you.”
It was brunch time, so I supposed the Alphas (former and new ones) had taken their breakfast. Mom asked me to wait in the dining room while she went to the kitchen.
As I was about to sit at the dining table, someone rounded a corner and my jaw literally dropped for the second time today, because the he-wolf who had just walked into my line of sight was one of the most handsome he-wolves I had ever laid my eyes on.
Scratched that - he WAS the most handsome he-wolf I had ever seen in my entire 17 years of life.
