Every minute he spent by the door was like a hot poker pushed down his throat, he hated having to stand and hopelessly wait but he hated himself for not attempting to find another solution to break through.
The truth remained however that there was nothing he could do and he knew better than anyone that no miracle on his part can in anyway get him through to his girls.
He stood by the door hoping and wishiy until the ugly feeling left.
It was like a spark that the groom sees when he takes off the veil from the bride's face.
In a speed twice faster than the strike of lightening he opened the door as soon as he could and jumped in.
His eyes landed on Hailey first, the girls were on the bed sleeping peacefully, he could not help but heaved a sigh of relief when he saw the scene.
It was not that he expected something ugly to have happened, he knew they were protected but it was a beautiful relief to see them safe.
He dragged the blanket over Hailey's head and kissed Nadiah, they were his baby girls why did the universe choose him to visit this disaster on.
He spent sometime staring at them before he went to the kitchen and offered himself a cold cup of milk.
It was not going to soothe his nerves as he would hope but it was better than doing nothing.
As he went back to his room he thought hard, deep lines of concern spread across his forehead.
Lost in the activity in his mind, he looked so pale and unrecognizable.
He had been carrying this fear and weight on his mind for far too long, eighteen years was enough to loose his mind and the effect it was having on him was becoming noticable as it was draining the life out of him, he could not help but think of the past.
Mira was barren, it was impossible to get her to bear him a child, despite how hard they tried and places the went, Mira still could not take in.
There was this pressure from home for him to get a second wife and there were talks flying around town about them, it became a source of mockery and shame.
Winterfell became a hole of pain for him but he couldn't leave, he had built a career for himself, his life had it's source in Winterfell.
Mira had to bear with the ugly notions about her birth status from people, she was understanding and supportive but he knew she was hurting inside.
He knew his wife and no matter how hard she tried to conceal her feelings, he could see through her.
Elvarus tried to make up for it even though he knew it would never be enough.
He gave her everything he could afford, if care and love was a person, no one defined it as he did.
Somehow, her husband's show of love and affection despite her barrenness earned her envy and that made things even worse but she couldn't complain.
Instead, Mira sought out ways to wipe the shame off her face and she went to lengths just to make it happen.
A baby was a baby, it didn't matter how or where it came from she just wanted a child.
It was in the evening, he had just got back from work and Mira welcomed him with a smile, a smile so sweet that he knew she had something beautiful to say.
"I want to bet it's something special.." he said after she gave him a warm hug.
"Take a guess.." she teased taking off his coat.
"Mum visited?" He sounded doubtful.
Not ever since a year after their marriage, his mum had stopped associating with him owing to his childless status with Mira.
Except for his brother Rowan, his family and relations were at odds with him over his refusal to take another wife.
"Maybe in a while..." Mira replied to his guess with a blooming smile.
He took of his shoes and went to her, she was facing him with a smile so sincere and pure.
That pain that she held in her eyes for the past few years was home and he could feel the life in her.
He took a hand up her chin and ran her chin over then he drew her head to his chest and kissed her hair.
"Darling..." He said softly.
"Whatever it is am glad it makes you happy.."
Mira wriggled softly out of his arm and looked him in the eye.
She held his gaze for a while as though she was looking for something in his eyes.
"Your going to be a father" she realeased the words out of her lungs like a spicy chicken served on a golden plate.
At first, he could not believe his ears, he had stood stuck in the moment unable to process the foreign data.
"A father.." Mira shook him. "Your going to be a father my love..".
He could not utter a word but his right hand moved down to her navel button, he caught her eyes in his and tears that had no permission rolled down his cheek.
Mira was shaking in excitement, it was a version of her he would have given anything in the past years to see.
"Ho...How..?" he managed to ask when he got his voice back.
"No details yet, I made something special for dinner.." she broke off and went to the kitchen.
For the best part of that evening he could not think of anything but be happy, they finally had what they wanted but how?
After all these years how did his wife take in?
Mira had hidden how she got pregnant from him, whenever he asked she had one excuse or the other to give until five months later when he cut the chase and put up a stern face.
He had a feeling something was wrong and he didn't like that she was involved in something he did not know.
He was the happiest about the news of the child, not only did it light up his home but his realatives had come closer and life was glowing but Mira was barren this he had no doubt.
The question then was how she got pregnant?
