A biography of Harriet Tubman has been under discussion for years, with rumors that several actresses, including Viola Davis, starred in the film. Erivo was selected in February 2017, with much of the cast and crew joining the following year. Filming began in Virginia in October 2018.

The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2019 and was released in the United States on November 1, 2019, being distributed by Focus Features. In Brazil, the film was released on February 6, 2020. To date, the film that received positive reviews and a top score ("A +") from CinemaScore has grossed more than $ 43 million worldwide.
