Chapter 23Die Strafe (Retribution)
Sofie Meyer's evening had extended well into the night. After the meal in the hotel's excellent restaurant, she closeted herself in her room and waited for the expected call from her boss in Munich.
The call came through at 8.30 pm, and she found herself speaking with Hauptman, (Chief Inspector) Boris Witt. His full title was Polizeihauptkommisar, but Hauptman was a lot easier on the tongue. Sofie was, in fact, an Oberleutnant, (Inspector) in Germany's Federal Police Service, the BKA or Bundeskriminalamt, but when she'd accepted the attachment to the UK police, and was assigned to the Merseyside Police's Specialist Murder Investigation Team, she'd asked to be given the temporary rank of Detective Sergeant.
