An F
An F. That was all it took. The second semester of my freshman year at college had come to a close, and I looked at my grades for the final exams, worth a majority of the final grade. American History 101 Final Exam: F. 26/100. Which brought my total grade down to a D. The class would not count towards my credits, and I would need to either spend the entire summer semester retaking the class, which meant I wouldn't be able to go home, or I'd have to possibly push back graduation to accommodate. The tears didn't even have a chance to land on my laptop before I was running out my dorm door. Why did I choose to go to college so far from home?! What was I thinking, trying to get a fresh new start in a new country with new people… Winding up not making a single friend in two semesters. Sunset had just hit the sky as I found myself on the bridge between the dorms and the campus proper, staring down from the rocky cobblestone towards the rushing rapids far beneath. I wiped my snotty nose on the sleeve of my sweatshirt. My mind was flooded with the disappointed remarks my parents were sure to make, the mocking laugh of my siblings, and the jeering of my peers. My heart race must have tripled, and I climbed onto the flat railing of the bridge, looking down as the water offered me an inviting end. I was so in a trance that when a voice called out to me, it shocked me so hard I stumbled, slipping off the edge. However, the end I expected never came. Instead, I felt two warm arms around me and heard the heavy flapping of wings. I couldn't take time to process this before I heard a shout of pain and felt myself be held close as me and my mysterious savior tumbled onto the shore of the river. When we hit the ground, I was let go and rolled a few feet away, giving me space to get my bearings and take a look at the person who rescued me. Nothing would have prepared me for what I saw. Laying next to me, groaning and holding his head, was a man with bat wings! This could only mean one thing: I was saved by a hot vampire!!! As the buzzing confusion s***h excitement s***h nausea s***h panic settled in my gut, I crawled a bit closer. "Hey, uh… What's yo-" "Don't die. Not this way." He said, in a bit of a gruff voice. I blinked, pulling back a bit as he sat up, stretching his wings to assess damage. It was then that I was reminded of my purpose for being on the bridge. For stepping up there. For gazing so longingly at the rushing river. "I… Thanks for saving me, but… I can't see any reason to keep on going." I admitted, a couple tears pricking my eyes. He looked at me directly, his deep brown eyes meeting my green ones. "Give me a month." "A month? For what?" I asked. "To prove to you. That you can keep going." He responded, matter of factly. "What if it doesn't work? What happens if I'm still wanting this after a month?" He looked at me seriously, the fangs in his mouth becoming more apparent. "Then I'll kill you myself." The offer took me off guard, and I stared at him dumbfounded. This guy… He was so determined to save me. I thought it through for a second, then nodded. "Ok. One month." I said to him, giving him a weak smile.
