"The orphanage for abounded and now taken care of children, from New Hope orphanage for children with amazing talents and being famous for being well behaved, will have its thirtieth anniversary next week on Monday." The reporter had said until his voice went silent.
The radio was suddenly turned off.
It was probably unusual for a family who already had children who were taken care of at home and probably waiting for their parents at home to adopt a new child willingly, but everything was possible in Sanbeth, a town that was famous for being peaceful with busy people here and there.
The town was surprisingly small for people who would move from Los Angeles or maybe even New York, which did happen the most for people who were over fifty years old. That was probably why the Harringtons wanted a change in their life and they thought that adopting a child, no matter the gender, would be a pleasing change to their family, even though they were busy with a lot of responsibilities already.
The orphanage, on the other hand, was decent from the outside, but the situation inside of the New Hopes' orphanage was not ideal, to say the least. That could be easily proven by the food stains on the couch here and there. Children were half of the day in their pajamas, they smelled for days without even a thought of taking a shower, clothes in the bathroom. Sometimes a person would wonder what those caregivers were even doing, but they did get away with it for almost thirty years, so it was okay.
On the other hand, Lucy was playing tag outside of the orphanage with other children even though she was older than them for years. "You can't catch me!?" She said out loud while she could hear the complaints of other children that were trying to catch her, but were unable to do that in the end.
That was Lucy, after all, a cheerful goofball that had too much energy in her, but she was pretty rebellious and she was rumored to be the only one who would never get adopted and would only leave this orphanage after she turned eighteen.
That would be true if the Harringtons didn't have other plans for her and that was for her to adopt her. They believed that they could change her and that she could grow up to be a beautiful person from the inside, especially since she would bully other children constantly, especially the new ones who were quite scared to be there.
She did notice that other children were busy talking about her as she sat next to a girl who was four years younger than her. Her name was Amy, she always knew what was going on there, no matter if she would get sick or not.
"Did you know that you might be the next, who those two people that Nicky saw going to that old bird's office want to adopt you?" Amy asked, as her brown eyes sparked probably out of excitement and adrenaline since she did like to talk about other people. Lucy shook her head in denial as she glanced at the old lady who was busy handing apples to other orphan children which did seem half rotten, but who was Lucy to complain? If nothing, at least she had food to eat. After living in this orphanage for almost fifteen years since her birthday was in late December when Christmas had already passed by, she learned how to behave around those caretakers, as she would call them, ever since she turned seven years old. That was probably why she had always gotten the best meals and why other ladies liked her a lot.
Yes, she was polite to other people and most of the staff working there, but other children feared her, she was like a monster to them. She wasn't beating them up, but she was verbally abusing them no matter what they had done, but still, those poor kids had respect for her for being the oldest there. That was her plan, after all, to be the worst child here so that no one would want to adopt her, but it did seem that her plan was failing.
Those stupid Harringtons...
Fuck them.
They WILL NEVER adopt ME!?
Oh, how she wished that that was not true, that old bird of the principal of the orphanage asked to see her and, of course, that she had to go there or she would be forced to go there anyway.
"Thank you for attending the meeting with your future parents, Lucy." The old lady glanced at her as she grimaced a smile in her direction and, of course, that had made Lucy feel goosebumps all over her body since that old lady Mrs. Bailey was creepy for doing literally anything.
"No problem, miss. After all, I didn't have any choice but to attend here." Lucy smiled at her and soon after that, she heard the laughs that were escaping Harrington's mouth.
"She has a good sense of humor," the woman said out of the blue. She wore a dark blue suit which was paired with a white t-shirt underneath and a white purse. Lucy didn't even bother looking any further, but the woman was not that bad. She had blue eyes and blonde hair tied in a ponytail. She didn't fail to notice that her hair was dyed since her roots were showing up.
"Yeah, she sure does." The man chuckled while Lucy only took a glimpse of him. He had somewhat brown hair slicked to the right side and brown eyes. He was wearing an oversized red button-up with a pair of dark blue jeans probably. "Thank you for your compliments." She smiled at them but was soon after that interrupted by Miss Bailey.
"Once again, are you sure that you want to adopt Lucy?" She asked, as Lucy could see how sweaty her palms were already as she handed them some weird papers that she didn't even know about until now, but the Harringtons did gladly accept those papers into their hands.
"We can talk about it more or maybe I should introduce you to some other kids." The old lady said, as Lucy was smiling with satisfaction. She hoped that she wouldn't have to go anywhere. She had always dreamed of that after all.
"No." Miss Harrington had said, while Miss Bailey and Lucy glanced at her with their eyes wide open. "We want to adopt her and that is our final decision." Mr. Harrington added as he locked eyes with Miss Bailey, who tried her best to force a smile on her face.
"Shit..." Lucy muttered to herself as she was told by Miss Bailey to leave the office since they had to talk about some adult stuff she didn't have to know about.
"Damn, I didn't know that you'd be leaving us just like that." Robert had said. He was munching on some old chips he had found in a storage room. Lucy had a feeling that he had sneaked in because he was hungry. After all, he was always hungry, but thanks to his genes, he had a fast metabolism.
"Yeah, who would even want her to be adopted in the first place?" A blonde girl dressed in a purple sweater said while Lucy glared at her. "Says a person whose parents had left here only because she wasn't behaving well." Lucy rolled her eyes at her while the blonde girl was left silent on that. "She just got roasted!?" A raven head had said out loud making other children laugh while the blonde sighed in response as she walked away from them, probably to her bedroom or something.
Lucy didn't care and she probably never would.
"It's official Lucy is getting adopted and she is leaving tomorrow morning?!" Amy said while the other children were listening to her attentively.
"Well, good luck," Sean had said. "At least you'll have parents if nothing," Harry said as he sat on the couch next to Peter. "Damn, you really want me to leave, huh?" Lucy said. "Well, that you were better to other kids we'd want you to stay." The ginger said while Harry punched his shoulder. "Shut up, Peter after all you will be next probably." The brunette said as he rolled his eyes in his direction.
"Well, you better start packing then," Amy said, while Lucy only nodded at her. Soon after that, she started walking up the stairs that led to the bedroom that she shared with eleven other girls.
Dammit...
