Courage and breakdown
CHAPTER ONE
“Dad? “Maisie called as she knocked in her father’s office door.
“Come in.”
Maisie opened the door and walked in. She was expecting her father to be sitting on his desk working on his desktop or some paperwork but she found him standing in front of glass door looking out at his balcony. From there he can see the pack training ground and she knows that he is watching the pack training that is on going at that time of day. Her father, Alpha Matthew Poldark, alpha of the Darkmoon pack used to head the training but has now relegated the role to her older brother Enzo as part of his alpha training. Enzo is more than ready for the role as he has been training from a young age but declined to take on the job until he finds his mate. His father agreed on a condition that at the age of 25 he will automatically take the position, mated or not. Enzo has 4 more years.
She went and stood next to her dad. He put his arm over her shoulder and they watched the training for a few minutes without saying a word.
“ Dad?” She said softly.
“Mmm?” He hummed.
“I need to talk to you...”
This time her father looked at her with a questioning expression on his face.
“What about?” He asked.
“Can we please sit down?” She said looking up at her dad with a serious and determined voice.
Okay...her dad said while motioning with one hand towards the sofa next to his desk.
She walked towards the seating area and sat on one of the single seat and his father sat on the three seater with a deep frown on his face. Maisie can tell by her father’s eyes that he is quite concern not knowing where this conversation is going.
She started fiddling with her hands nervously already imagining her self changing her mind and running out through the door. But she took a deep breath to gather some courage and to calm herself down.
She has prepared a speech for this occasion and at the moment none of the things she practiced is coming to her at this moment. She is now starting to panic and can barely think. Her father is just sitting there looking at her with a questioning look.
“Honey, are you okay? Is there something wrong?… “he finally asked after moments has passed and she has not uttered a word.
“Ummm, I’m fine dad, nothing is wrong?” She said
“Then what is it?”
Maisie took a seat and her father did the same, she took a deep breath and sighed loudly before continuing the conversation.
“Dad I want to go to a university in London....”she quickly blurted out. Like if she said it slowly she might change her mind.
For a few seconds her dad did not say anything at all. He just looked at her like she didn’t say anything at all. Then he frowned as the realisation of what she said send in. Maisie watched her father’s face changed into so many different expressions, from shock to questioning look, to worried and then to sadness.
“Why?”He finally asked with a sigh.
“Why would you pick that place. There’s so many great schools here or even the next town. Why would you pick a place where the pack or I will not be able to protect you?”
Maisie is so surprised, and speechless. This is not the reaction that she had expected from her father at all. She’d expected him to have an straight up NO for an answer and that they would have a big argument. She is now looking at her father and all she can see in his face is sadness, hurt, and a bit of disappointment. And Maisie did not like it, she is not prepared for it. She has expected him to be disappointed and angry but seeing the hurt in her dad’s eyes is definitely not she was prepared for.
She was so determined to talk and convince her father of letting her go study in London but now, she is second guessing her decision.
She sighed. “ Dad I have always wanted to go study in London, it has always my plan since I was young”.
“Even after what happened to your mum?”Her dad said with bitterness clear in his voice.
“Dad I know you despise the place and will always associate it to mum’s death, we all do and that will never change but London is also where the happiest memories I have of mum. And when I think about her, when I’m missing her I alway think of all the happy times we have spent there.” She took a deep breath to stop her self from crying before she continued. “Mum and I has always talked about me going there to study and that she would come stay with me sometimes. And we will go to the theatre together....” she couldn’t go on anymore, her voice is breaking and she felt the lump on her throat from too much emotion and tears is now falling freely down her face and she is now looking down at her feet.
When she looked up at her father’s face softened and he stood up to come to her. He reached out his hand to her and she stood up. They hugged and she continued crying. Her dad just hugged and held her quietly. She doesn’t know how long they both stood there but when she broke the hug and looked up at her dad, his eyes was a bit red but he had a gentle smile on his face.
He is now holding her at arms length and looking at her with eyes full of understanding and love. Then he said “can you give me time to think about it? You still have months to go before you have to send in your applications, right?
She gave a hopeful nod not saying anything. At least it isn’t a no she thought.
“Okay, I will think about it and might discuss it with you later on before I make my final decision.” He said.
“Thanks,dad” she happily said.
“Don’t thank me yet kiddo and please try not to keep your hopes up.” He said looking at her with raised brows.
She tip toed and gave her dad a quick kiss before she ran out of the room. She headed to the gym attached to the pool house behind the pack house. She was already wearing her gym clothes when she left her room this morning because she has planned to workout after speaking to her dad. She was walking, or more like skipping and bouncing really with a wide goofy grin on her face. Luckily no one is around otherwise she would have been teased. She barely contained her emotions as she was getting closer to the gym, she can see people inside swimming in the pool on the ground floor of the building. She went and headed up to the gym at the upper level. When she arrive at the gym it was as she expected it, empty. The people that regularly used the gym are at training or at work.
She decided to use the treadmill first, she started with some stretching before going on the treadmill. 10 minutes in and she was getting in the rhythm and her mind drifted with the thought of London and the memories of the night she lost her mother. It was 6 years ago but she will never forget that day and the days that followed after. The memories came crushing down like a ton of bricks while she picked up her speed on the treadmill, matching the heavy feeling that came over her at that moment.
