Chapter Six Alvin's POV I knew I had to find some other way to erase the detective's memory of me, she seemed to be so bold. She wasn't scared of me even after I showed her my eyes and made her hear my voice. I walked into the office of the afterlife and my grandfather was working on some files, I took a seat in his office and rested my head. I suddenly heard the sound of his walking stick coming towards me, I kept my eyes shut because I didn't want to be asked about the detective. He moved closer to me and spanked me. "Joe", I shouted. He rolled his eyes at me, "You dare call me Joe?", he asked and spanked me with his walking stick, "You dare call me Joe?", he asked again, still spanking me. My grandfather was always quick to spank me whenever I make a mistake, he had been doing that right from when I had to live in the palace thousand years ago. I moved away from him and frowned, "Can you stop spanking me please", I smirked. His eyes furrowed, "I will keep spanking you until you learn to do the right thing", he stated. I walked up to him and cupped his face, "Grandpa, I'm over a thousand years now, I'm not the little kid you spank then", I responded and moved away from him quickly, I knew he would try to spank me again. He smiled, "Alvin, you need to take these souls to the afterlife", he instructed. I frowned, it was so hard to lead the souls to the afterlife, I hate to see the expressions on their faces. A lot of emotions are always accompanied with leading them to the afterlife. I rushed to my grandpa, "But grandpa, how long do I have to do this", I asked. He gave me a hostile glare, "Will you like me to send you to the people up there so you can ask them?", he asked. He knew my greatest fear was meeting the heaven council, they were always strict with judgement. They had me locked up in the mountain house for years. "Grandpa, you can just talk to them please", I pleaded. "Alvin, take the souls to the afterlife, we will talk when you get back", he replied briskly and turned to leave. I looked at the souls, they were crawled up in one of the corners, I counted and they were about 12. One of them was Lucy, she was murdered by Hugo who I was on a search for. Lucy seemed so young that I wondered why Hugo chose to Kill her, she appeared like she was in her early twenties. I led the souls to the afterlife, some were busy giggling and chatting like they were happy to be dead, while others couldn't stop crying. I had to block my ears so I wouldn't hear their cries, I hate to see people that way. I've always wanted to live with the humans but I couldn't, I was dumped by my own dad and I had to live on the mountain. I stopped at the door of the afterlife and the souls trooped in, I made a head count and one of them was missing. I looked around and I saw one of the souls at my back, it was Lucy. She broke into tears. And here they come again. "Please I don't want to go in there, I want to go back to my parents", she cried. I hate to see people cry, especially not someone as young as her, "It's so safe in there, there are lots of things over there", I persuaded her to go in. She held my leg, "I want to see my parents for the last time, please help me", she pleaded. It was against our rules to relate with humans, and we must never make a deal or promise to them because we must never break the promise we make. I squat beside her, "I'm sorry but I can't, you have to go in there. You belong there now", I said and pulled her up. She struggled with me, "Just one last chance, please", she pleaded. That was one of the reasons I hated to lead souls to the afterlife, "We don't relate with humans, you have to go in there", I yelled, I was starting to get uncomfortable with her plead. She stood still, "I'm not a human, I'm a ghost, a ghost", she screamed. I stared at her for some minutes, I realized that she was actually right, she was no longer a human but a ghost now, I looked into her eyes and felt the need to help her. I could feel the pain she was going through, having to stay away from her parents. "Please?", she pleaded with the most innocent eyes I had ever seen. I sighed, I hoped I won't get caught for helping her, "Come on", I said and locked the afterlife door. She held my hand, I gave her a long stare, "You've got some nerves, don't you?", I frowned. She let go of my hand and bent her head, "I am sorry", she murmured. I walked out of the afterlife and Lucy followed right behind, I had been to the detective office to check out her case and that was how I got to know that it was done by Hugo, the traitor. I got into my car and she got in too, she fumbled with the seat belt, "Can you help me with this?", she asked. I stared at her for some minutes, I couldn't believe she was struggling to buckle her belt, "You don't need a seatbelt, you are dead already", I murmured and zoomed off, out of the Green City and on to her parent's workplace. After hours of driving, we turned to the 5th street and she directed me to pull over. I drove into the garage and she got out of the car, she ran into the restaurant which belonged to her parents. Outside was a big banner with a picture, it was written boldly on it, "Justice for Lucy". I sighed as I saw the picture, Hugo was a big threat to the Green City and also to the humans, I had to think of a way to nab him or there will be more murder cases to deal with. She rushed outside again, she held my hands as tears rolled down her eyes, "Why can't they see me?", she cried, "Mom and dad can't hear me, why can't I hug them?", she let out a whimper after every word. I didn't know what to say to her, she was putting me in a very difficult situation, "That is because you are dead. I am the only one who can see you", I responded. She looked at her parents and broke into tears again. Lucy turned to me and wiped her tears, she held my hands, "You can make them see me right?, I know you can, please do that for me", she pleaded. I could do that but it wasn't allowed, especially not with humans. I had to turn her down, "No I can't", I lied. She turned and looked at her parents again, she turned back and held my hands, she pulled me into the restaurant, "I...I was..I was a medical student", she sobbed, "I wanted to do all I can to help my parents", she added. I couldn't say anything to her as I was dumbfounded, I wasn't able to think of the right word that would calm her down. "We have to go", I said, I was becoming uncomfortable. "No, I want to stay here with my parents", she said and I saw that coming. That was the problem with humans, she told me she wanted to see her parents for the last time and then she was refusing to go back to where she belong. I knew she was going to do that, I pulled her by her hands and tried to drag her out of the restaurant, we got to the door and some children trooped in, I had to stop. The children ran to her parents and they were offered some foods and drinks, I was surprised by their actions, they lost their only child and they were still ready to help. I released Lucy's hand, I couldn't move, it was like my leg was glued to the floor. Lucy turned to me, "Please help my parents", she pleaded. I couldn't understand what she meant by that, "I don't understand you?", I mumbled. "They..they don't have enough money..my parents tried hard to send me to college...please help them", She pleaded. I couldn't turn her down, I knew it was against our rules to help humans but I couldn't bear to see them in pain, they proved to be good and I just couldn't turn her down, "Alright, I will do that", I responded and a smile fell from her face, "Come on now", I added and she came willingly. We got into the car and drove off, I couldn't get what just happened off my mind, I had to find a way to help her parents, and in a way it wouldn't get noticed by others. On the other hand, I had to wipe the detective's memory of me.
