IVY'S P.O.V There was nothing I hated more than the smell of hospital; the atmosphere was a mixture of drugs and antiseptic, and the smell clung to my throat, almost choking me, but I had no choice. I had to sit there, through the nasty smell and wait for my turn with the doctor. My reason for being there almost made it bearable though - I’m pregnant, almost a month gone. I relaxed into the chair, subtly placing my hand over my stomach. I was not yet showing; thankfully, that would take a couple of months. I had not expected to be pregnant. It came as a shock. I remember going about my business normally until I started feeling nauseous. At first, I thought I had the flu, but it persisted and I had to take a test. Afterwards, there was the issue of telling the father – Devin Watson. The thought of Devin brought a smile to my face. Devin Watson was my boss and the CEO of Watson’s Industries. Thinking of him warmed my heart a little bit. I remember the first time I met Devin. I was poor and desperately searching for a job so I could take care of my sick mother. I still don’t know what he saw in me that made him employ me, because to be honest, my interview was an awkward mess, but he did. When I told him about needing money to pay for my mother’s hospital fees, he gave me an advance on my salary. How I went from being his assistant to his mistress, then, the mother of his child is almost hard to explain. At first, we had a professional relationship – he was my boss and I was his assistant, nothing more, nothing less. I mean, I was attracted to him, but who wasn’t? Devin was picture-perfect handsome. He had the kind of face one only read about in books, the kind of eyes you could get lost in and the kind of body one would keep in a gallery for people to look at and admire but never own. But I couldn’t do anything about my attraction – until one night when we both had too much to drink at an office party and I ended up in his bed. At first, we agreed that it was just a one time thing that should never happen again; but it did, over and over again. Eventually, Devin drew up a contract for me to sign; the entire point of the contract was that our relationship was strictly s****l with no strings attached. And for a while, there was no string attached – until I found out I was pregnant. I had no idea how tell him because pregnancy was not in our plans, it had never been and I could not help but imagine how he would react. The pregnancy changed the dynamic of out relationship. We were no longer two people who were just having s*x with each other. We were going to be parents and that was a huge deal, so when I informed Devin of the pregnancy, I had not expected him to be excited…well, excited wasn’t really the word I would use. He had simply offered me one of his rare smiles and proceeded to call his lawyer to draw up another contract. This contract expressly stated that I was to give the baby to him after delivery and end the relationship. I was surprised he wanted the baby. When I asked why he had simply ignored my question. I tried to find out from him again but he still ignored. I was sure he had a reason for wanting the baby and I would find out soon enough. Anyway, I was at the hospital for the first antenatal care. I was six weeks pregnant already. Time flies quickly, uhn? Speaking of time, Devin was supposed to be here minutes ago, where was he? I glanced at my wristwatch, a small frown on my face. He had agreed to come with me for my hospital appointments all through the period of the pregnancy, so where was he now? I glanced at the hospital doors, willing them to open and reveal Devin. Minutes passed and Devin was still nowhere to be found. I switched on my phone. In the past couple hours, I had sent him a thousand messages and received replies to none. I dialed his number for the umpteenth time, and as usual, it went straight to voice mail. I stuffed the phone into my purse again. “Miss Stone?” a voice called and I jerked my head up in the direction of the voice. A nurse had peeked her head through the open door. “The doctor will see you now,” she said and I reluctantly rose to my feet. I didn’t want to do this without Devin, but he was clearly nowhere to be found. Maybe he was stuck in traffic. He would probably meet up with me in the middle of the appointment, right? I walked towards the nurse who opened the door wider for me. I stepped into the room, and stopped in front of the table. Behind the table was a bespectacled middle aged female doctor with a pleasant smile. I was nervous and I knew I would feel a lot better if Devin was here, but he was not here as we had planned, so I had to suck it up and deal with it. An hour later, I had completed my appointment with the doctor, and Devin was still had not made it to the hospital. As I walked out of the hospital, I grabbed my phone from my purse and turned it on. There were no calls or messages from Devin. I could feel my guts swimming with fear, suspicions and uncertainty, but I managed to shove those feelings aside. I was very sure Devin had a reason for not showing up today. He was probably just caught up with work. I refused to get scared. No, nothing was going to ruin this moment. The doctor had said that all was well with the baby and there was nothing to worry about. That was good news and I would share with Devin once I could get through to him. With that thought, I made an instant decision, I was going to stop by at Devin’s office, just to let him know how the doctor’s appointment went. I opened the door to my car, and climbed into the driver’s seat. Closing the door, I flipped down the mirror to stare at my reflection. My face looked a little too bare, so, I quickly reached out to retouch my foundation. I shut the mirror, turned the key and started driving. As I drove down to the office, I kept glancing at my phone waiting for a phone call, or even a text message, anything from Devin. He still had not replied any of my texts or called me back. Different emotions warred inside me. I was scared that Devin could have changed his mind about the pregnancy, but that was almost stupid. He had almost six weeks to decide about the pregnancy. Why would he be changing his mind now? No, no, no giving in to fear and suspicion. My screen remained blank till I got to the office. The office in question was the headquarters of the Watson Industries, where I worked as Devin’s personal assistant. The building was a massive skyscraper and it stood so tall and huge in the midst of the other buildings around, it was difficult to miss it even from afar. With a sigh, I grabbed my purse and phone and climbed out of the car. Well, at least, I was going to see him now, so, it was all good. With this in my mind, I walked into the building. The moment I stepped in, the receptionist at the desk raised her head and offered a smile in my direction. “Hi, Ivy.” She glanced at the clock, it was twelve o’clock in the afternoon. “You are quite late to work today.” “Hello, Sue. I’m actually not supposed to come to work today,” I answered dismissively. “I took the week off. Is Mr. Watson around?” I asked. Sue, the receptionist, raised a brow, but answered. ”Yeah, he’s in his office. Although, I’m not sure if going in would be the best idea…” “Oh, don’t worry about that. I just need to talk to him about something real quick. Thank you, Sue.” I said, turning and walking towards the elevator. As I clicked on the button, I briefly wondered if any of my co-workers knew the type of relationship I had with Devin. If they did, they never let it show. I walked into the elevator, clicked on the button leading to the last floor and the doors slid close. A few minutes later, they slid open again and I stepped out. Luckily for me, the hallway to Devin’s office was clear, so I didn’t have to exchange greetings with anyone as I walked towards his office. I paused at his door, sucking a deep breath in. I hesitated. Was this a good idea? Maybe I should just go back home and wait for him to reply my messages or return my calls. No, absolutely not. I was already here, I might as well get this over with. Steadying my nerves, I pressed on the doorknob and without warning, I pushed the door open. “Devin,” I began to say as I walked into the office. My voice trailed off, and my feet stumbled to a stop as I took in the sight in front of my – Devin on his chair and a blonde woman sitting on him, her arms tangled in his hair and his arms around her as they kissed. My jaw dropped as I gasped. “Devin?” At the sound of my voice, the woman jumped off his thighs, whirling around as she struggled to adjust her shirt, As she raised her head, I immediately recognized her. That was Caroline…Devin’s fiancée.
