Chapter Four: The Traitor in the Shadows

920 Words
Inspector Omar stood by the window for several seconds, his eyes fixed on the empty street. The black car had disappeared, but the image of Colonel Yasser getting out of it remained etched in his mind. Was he working with the gang? Or was he watching them for another reason? Omar slowly closed the curtain, then looked again at the paper bearing the White Bear gang's logo. One thing was clear: the gang knew his every move, and perhaps… There really was a traitor within the police force. The next morning, Omar entered the police station as if he hadn't seen anything. Colonel Yasser was in his office talking on the phone, as calm as ever. He looked up as Omar entered. "Anything new?" Omar watched him for a few seconds before replying, "Nothing important." But inside, he was saying the exact opposite. He moved closer and placed a file on the table. "We found information about a man named Vladimir." The colonel's expression changed for a very brief moment… but Omar didn't notice. Yasser said, "A Russian name?" "He appears to be running a smuggling network." The colonel lit a cigarette slowly. Then he said, "This is getting way out of hand." "That's why we need to get closer... not back down." The colonel looked directly up at him. "Sometimes, retreating is what keeps you alive, Omar." The sentence sounded casual... but it carried a heavy weight of warning. Omar left the office, burdened by suspicion, and in the hallway, Ali approached him quickly. "There's something you need to see." "What happened?" He handed him a small file. "We examined the electronic chip we found inside the victim's shoe." Omar quickly opened the file. It contained multiple coordinates in the desert... and encrypted images of weapons shipments... but one image in particular made his heart stop: an army truck. It was transporting boxes bearing the White Bear gang's logo. "This means the gang doesn't just steal weapons... someone is supplying them," Ali said, stunned. Omar's eyes narrowed. This was no longer just a smuggling operation; it was a serious infiltration from within. That evening, Omar and Ali headed to an old warehouse near the industrial area. One of the coordinates on the chip led them there. The place looked deserted—the windows were broken, and the walls were riddled with damp. But Omar noticed something important: fresh tire tracks. He whispered, "Someone's still using this place." He took out his gun and cautiously entered. The warehouse was eerily dark and silent. Then they heard a metallic clang inside. The two exchanged glances and moved forward among the rusty crates. Suddenly, a man emerged from the shadows and ran toward the back door. "Stop!" Ali yelled. But the man sped away, and Omar chased after him through the narrow passages until they emerged into a backyard filled with metal containers. The man was unnaturally fast. He leaped over a metal barrier and disappeared among the containers. Omar reached the far corner…and stopped abruptly. No one was there…but something else was. A small black bag. He bent down cautiously and opened it. Inside were files…forged passports…and bundles of dollars. At the bottom…a faded old photograph. Omar slowly lifted it. It was a picture of three men standing in the desert. One was a huge Russian with a White Bear gang tattoo. The second was an unidentified man. And the third…Omar froze when he saw him…Captain Adham, the missing officer. Omar returned to his office that night as a sandstorm battered the station windows. He held the photograph in front of him and began to review everything again. Adham was connected to the gang. But was he working with them…or against them? Suddenly, a more serious question occurred to him. What if his disappearance hadn't been by choice? The phone rang suddenly. He quickly picked up the receiver…but there was only the sound of heavy breathing. Then a faint, garbled voice came through: "If you want to find Adham… go to the old gas station on the desert road." "Who are you?" A short silence followed. Then the voice said, "Before they kill him." The line went dead. Less than an hour later, Omar's car sped along the desert road through the gusty wind. Ali sat nervously, watching the expanding darkness. "I feel like this is a trap." "Probably," Omar replied, his gaze fixed on the road. "And yet we came." "Because Adham might be the key to everything." The old gas station finally came into view amidst the storm. It was deserted… half-buried in sand. Omar stopped the car and got out cautiously. The silence was eerie; even the wind seemed to whisper something unintelligible. They approached the dark main building, and then Ali spotted a trail of blood near the door. Omar's heart raced. The two of them rushed inside. The smell of blood was overwhelming, and on the ground… they found a man tied to a chair. His head was down, his clothes torn. Omar ran toward him and jerked his face up. His eyes widened instantly… Captain Adham. He was alive… but barely. Adham raised his tired eyes to Omar and whispered haltingly, "They're… inside the police…" Then he coughed up blood and continued in a trembling voice, "Vladimir isn't the most dangerous person in this case…" Omar moved closer quickly. "Then who is it?!" But before he could answer… a massive explosion rocked the station, and the walls shook violently. Then all the lights went out.
