Chapter One: Howling Sands
The wind slammed the doors of the four-wheel-drive vehicle as its wheels sank into the soft sand near the northern desert border. The night was so thick that the sky appeared as a black, starless canvas, save for a faint light that danced in the distance between the dunes. Sergeant Ali tightened his grip on the steering wheel and said in a strained voice, "I swear I saw the light here minutes ago." The man next to him didn't reply. Inspector Omar stared through the windshield with unwavering eyes, as if searching for something the others couldn't see. He slowly stubbed out his cigarette and said, "Stop the vehicle." The vehicle stopped in the middle of the desert, and silence fell. A heavy silence… eerie. Even the wind seemed to stand still for a moment. Omar opened the door and stepped out onto the sand. The desert night chill was sharp, but something else sent shivers down his spine. Omar was a man in his forties, powerfully built, 185 cm tall. Dark-skinned with a light beard. A scent. The smell of gunpowder. He raised his flashlight and began to move slowly among the dunes, while Ali followed hesitantly. "Maybe just hunters…" Ali muttered. But Omar wasn't convinced. For three weeks, the police had been receiving vague reports of trucks appearing at night deep in the desert and then vanishing without a trace. No license plates. No names. No witnesses willing to talk. Some intelligence officers whispered about an international arms smuggling network. Others dismissed it as mere Bedouin rumors. But Omar… he felt that something bigger was moving beneath the sand. He stopped suddenly… shone his light down on the ground… deep, fresh tire tracks. He knelt, touching the sand with his fingers, then said quietly, "They passed here less than an hour ago." Ali's eyes widened. "Where are they going?" Omar pointed south. "Inside the desert." They followed the tracks for a few meters until Ali spotted something metallic, half-buried in the sand. He bent down and quickly picked it up. It was a blank cartridge, but it wasn't ordinary. Omar took it from him and studied the small inscription on it, then his expression changed for a brief moment. "What's this?" He didn't answer right away. He ran his finger over the Russian letters engraved on the metal casing. Then he said in a low voice, "This isn't ammunition sold here." The wind picked up again, carrying with it a distant sound like the roar of an engine. The two of them turned quickly. At the top of the distant dune… two white lights appeared for a moment, then suddenly disappeared. Omar ran towards the dune, with Ali panting after him. They reached the top… but there was nothing there… just a long trail of tires stretching into the heart of the desert. Suddenly, Omar spotted something else… a body lying near the black rocks. Ali froze in place… while Omar cautiously advanced, his hand reaching for his pistol. The man lay on his back, his face covered in dust and blood. His military uniform was torn, and a small black hole ran through his chest. One bullet, precise, professional. Omar bent down to examine the body, then something near the man's right hand caught his eye. It was a small, torn piece of red cloth with a strange drawing on it that resembled a polar bear's head. "Who is this?" Ali whispered. But Omar was looking at something else—at the dead man's hand. His fingers were tightly clenched around a small, broken transmitter. Omar pressed play, and there was intermittent static… Then a distorted voice with a Russian accent chimed in: "...the shipment has arrived…the route is clear…dispose of—" The recording cut out abruptly, and silence fell—a silence heavier than the desert itself. Omar slowly raised his head toward the darkness stretching before him. He felt that this night was not the beginning of an ordinary affair…but the beginning of a hidden war…being waged beneath the sands. Suddenly, a sharp c***k of gunfire echoed from afar—a bullet pierced the sand right near Ali's foot. He screamed and threw himself to the ground. Omar whirled around, trying to pinpoint the source of the shot in the darkness. Then he spotted a shadow on a distant dune—a tall man in a black coat, watching them. For just a second, the moonlight reflected off his rifle, and then the man vanished into the darkness.
