Johnathan woke to the sound of a Kerical monitor measuring the beat of his heart. His body felt stiff and every joint ached as though he’d been beaten for a week. The hospital room was stark, only fitted with a bedside table, the medical equipment he was hooked up to, and a tall Kerical lamp, switched off to allow his main source of light to come from the sun rising in the sky, visible through the small window to the side of the bed.
