"Immortality is a long and lonely road for a female cultivator. On this path, one must acquire everything essential, yet shed every weakness.

One cannot have too little talent, scripture, elixir, or treasure—without these, progress is impossible. But one cannot have too much sentiment, frailty, mercy, or greed—these will bring a swift death.

And above all, one must walk the tightrope of perception: beauty must not be too striking as to invite disaster, nor too plain as to be overlooked; wisdom must not be too sharp as to intimidate, nor too dull as to be foolish."

I don’t want the ruler!” “Quick, try to remember now,” Tiange urged softly. “Right!” Tianqiao frantically opened her book, lips moving silently. “Mo Tiange.” Master Wen’s voice cut through the tension. Tiange stood swiftly. “Yes, Master.” She took a steadying breath. Her voice, clear and precise, filled the hall: “When parents call, answer without delay. When parents command, act without laziness. When parents instruct, listen respectfully. When parents reprove, obey submissively. In winter, keep them warm; in summer, keep them cool. In morning, pay respects; at night, settle them. When going out, must tell; when returning, must show face. Dwell steadily; pursuits unchanging…” She continued flawlessly, her recitation carrying her to the very end of the required section: “… Mourn three years, dwell in constant sorrow. Dwell simply, abstain from wine and meat. Serve the dead with full rites; sacrifice with full sincerity. Serve the dead as you served them living.” A flicker of something almost like approval softened Master Wen’s stern features. “Good. Well recited. Today, you may begin the section ‘On Fraternal Duty When Going Forth.’” It was high praise, rarely given. “Yes, Master.” Tiange sat down, a small knot of tension loosening in her chest. She opened her book to the new page. In this world tilted against her, in this dusty clan hall where girls were barely tolerated, this small victory, earned by focus and sheer will, felt like a sliver of sunlight piercing the gloom. Outside, the sun climbed higher, warming the village. But Mo Tiange knew, deep in her bones, that her path was just beginning, and it promised to be long and strewn with thorns. The weight of her mother’s illness, the village’s indifference, and the constant struggle to be seen as *more* than just a burden pressed down, but a spark of fierce determination, kindled by that rare moment of approval, flickered stubbornly within her.
