Prologue
Lia Morgan sat restless at her kitchen table, paint-caked fingers brushing over the bundle of worn letters before her. The patter of rain upon her seaside cottage windows provided a dull backdrop to her spiraling thoughts. The parcel had arrived without warning that morning, delivered by a lawyer overseeing her late mother's estate - an unexpected turn which left Lia reeling.
She lifted the topmost letter, its aging paper crinkling under her touch. "Bare words, nothing more," she muttered in vain attempt to soothe her frayed nerves. Yet Lia knew better than to dismiss what these letters might hold - answers to questions long left unasked regarding her mother's secretive past.
Her gaze fell upon the photograph slipping loose from the stack, its grainy black-and-white image bearing down from the table. A youthful version of her mother smiled back, standing beside a tall man with ink-dark hair and piercing eyes that seemed to survey the onlooker with equal measure of arrogance and vulnerability. Something about him made Lia uneasy, though she knew his name from the scrawl on the back: Gabriel Stone, the reclusive billionaire renowned equally for his fortune and fearsome reputation. But what connection did he share with Lia's mother, and why had she never spoken to him?
Hands quivering, Lia lifted the foremost letter and slowly unfurled its worn pages. Her mother's penmanship, so familiar, caused her heart to tighten. As she read the neat script, Lia swore she heard her mother's voice echoing in her mind. "My dearest Lia, there is something you must know..."
The words blurred as a tide of emotions swept over her. Blinking tears away, Lia forced her eyes to refocus on the letter clutched in her hands.
"My love, there is much I have not told you about your past." Her mother's words echoed in Lia's mind as she let the worn pages fall from her grasp. “No.” She shook her head, unwilling to accept what was now clear. Her whole life had been built on half-truths and omissions.
Gabriel Stone. A name that struck both fear and curiosity in those who knew him. His shadowy dealings were legend, though facts were few. Lia searched frantically, finding only cryptic references that deepened the mystery rather than solved it. There, staring back cold and calculating, was the face she had seen in fleeting memories but never could place.
Questions tumbled through her thoughts. Why had her mother kept this from her? What darkness did Gabriel truly represent? And most importantly, who was this man to her? The father she never knew yet carried his blood.
Only one path forward was clear. She must uncover the truth, no matter the cost. Confronting Gabriel Stone was the only way to make sense of the life built on lies. Resolve steeled her heart as she gathered what clues remained and rose to leave, the chair grating across the worn wood floor. Answers awaited, though what else she might find, she could not say.
Jenna froze as an unexpected knock echoed through the quiet cabin, peering through frosted glass to glimpse an unknown silhouette shrouded by sheets of rain. Her pulse quickened; she wasn't anticipating guests, especially on such a dismal evening. Steeling her nerves, she unlatched the heavy door to find a stranger shivering on the stoop, his coat and hair soaked through.
“May I help you?” Jenna inquired levelly despite her swimming apprehension. The man’s piercing gaze surveyed her intently. “Are you Jenna Morgan?” He queried. She nodded cautiously, demanding “Who wants to know?” His chilling smile didn’t meet his eyes as he replied “My name is Lucas Hart. I work for Gabriel Stone.”
At the mention of that name, Jenna’s breath caught in her constricting throat. “Gabriel Stone? What does he want from me?” Lucas’ smile melted into a serious expression. “I’m here about your mother, and the letters you recently received. Mr. Stone wishes to meet with you.” Jenna’s grip on the doorframe tightened protectively. “Why should I believe you?” Lucas withdrew a business card slowly from within his rain-drenched coat.
“Because Gabriel Stone is your father, and he’s longed to find you. But those letters weren’t from him - they were a trap meant to lure you out. You’re in more danger than you understand.” Jenna’s mind raced as her mother’s warnings of threat echoed distantly. Who else knew of the letters, and what did they want from her?
“What danger do we face?” she asked, her voice barely rising above the deluge.
Julian glanced back tensely, locking eyes with Lia once more. “Vincent Graves seeks vengeance against your father, Gabriel. Now he knows of your existence. We must get away with haste.”
Lia’s heart raced as her understanding of the world came undone. Her father lived as a tycoon, yet had remained hidden. Now a man unknown hunted her based solely on her ties to him.
She had no recourse but to follow. Gathering her coat, Lia trailed Julian into the downpour. Questions swirled endlessly in her mind, doubts devouring what little certainty clung to her spirit.
As she sealed her former home, a grim thought took hold. Could Gabriel truly be her sire? Or was this but one more mendacity in a game whose rules evaded her grasp?
Answers would have to bide their time. For now, survival demanded cooperation with a stranger who vouched for a father she’d never met.
With the click of the lock, her past life ended. Guiding Lia into the tempest, Julian offered her sole certainty - nothing would remain as it once had been.
