Decades after the 1993 senior class vanished during the Silent Year, Gravewood High seems normal again except for the unsettling whispers in the hallways and the mysterious figure stepping into the classroom the Returning Teacher.

Chapter 1: The New Semester
The first day back at Gravewood High always had a strange energy. The hallways buzzed with chatter, lockers slamming, and the squeak of sneakers across polished floors. Posters advertising the upcoming basketball and football games clung to the walls, and the cheerleaders were already practicing near the gym, their bright uniforms a stark contrast to the dark shadows lingering in the corners. Jordan Cruz tightened his backpack straps as he navigated the crowded hallway. He wasn’t nervous about classes or grades he’d been a transfer before but something about Gravewood High felt… different. The air smelled faintly metallic, like a storm before it broke, and every glance toward the mirrors in the hall made him feel as if someone or something was watching. “Hey, Cruz!” a voice called. Jordan turned to see Lila Hart weaving through the throngs of students, her notebook clutched to her chest. “I’ve been meaning to warn you… don’t trust the new teacher.” Jordan raised an eyebrow. “New teacher? Who’s that?” “Mr. Vane,” she said, her dark eyes darting nervously to the end of the hall where the classroom doors lined the wall. “He’s… strange. You’ll see. Just… don’t be alone with him.” Before Jordan could ask more, a bell rang, signaling the start of first period. Students rushed toward their classrooms, forming a moving river of backpacks and sneakers. Jordan followed Lila, weaving past a group of football players carrying their gear, who were laughing and tossing a ball back and forth as if the hallways themselves were a practice field. Near the cafeteria, the cheerleaders flipped and twirled, their motions so fluid that Jordan could barely catch their movements in the peripheral shadows. And then he saw him. Mr. Vane stood at the front of the classroom, a tall, dark figure with an unsettling calm. His eyes scanned the students like a predator sizing up its prey, and a faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips charming, but wrong. There was a weight to him, an almost tangible darkness that seemed to bend the light in the room. Even the fluorescent bulbs above flickered as students trickled in, their chatter faltering just slightly, as if some invisible hand had pressed down on the noise. “Good morning, class,” he said, his voice smooth, confident, and carefully measured. It was welcoming, almost too welcoming. “I’m Mr. Vane, your history teacher for this semester. I look forward to getting to know each of you… personally.” A ripple of unease passed through the room. Jordan felt it instantly a cold prickle crawling up his spine but when he glanced at his classmates, most were too absorbed in their schedules or phones to notice. Lila, however, caught his eye and gave a subtle, urgent shake of her head. As Mr. Vane began speaking, the students tried to follow the lesson, but Jordan couldn’t focus. There was something… wrong about him. Something familiar, though Jordan couldn’t place it. And when he looked at the mirrors lining the walls reflections meant to show nothing more than themselves he swore he saw shapes moving behind Mr. Vane, echoes of students who shouldn’t be there. Across the hall, the sounds of the basketball team dribbling and the band tuning instruments offered a brief, grounding normalcy. But even that felt fragile, like a thin layer of calm stretched over something dark, ready to break. Jordan glanced around, catching a glimpse of Lila scribbling frantically in her notebook. Whatever she knew, whatever warning she had, it was clear: this wasn’t just another semester. Something had returned to Gravewood High. And it had a plan.
