The Forest Knows

784 Words
Aria wasn’t the type to back down from a challenge. If anything, Liam Grey’s warning only made her more determined. After leaving the archives, she walked towards Silverclaw Forest, the place where Daniel Harper had disappeared. The townsfolk avoided it, she had noticed. Even Martha had hesitated when Aria asked her about it. The trees loomed tall and ancient, their dense canopy casting long shadows. The deeper she ventured, the quieter it became, no birds, no rustling leaves, just an eerie stillness that made her skin prickle. Her instincts screamed that she wasn’t alone. She turned sharply. Nothing. Shaking off the unease, she pulled out her phone and snapped a few pictures. If the town wasn’t going to tell her the truth, maybe the forest would. Then she heard it. A low growl. It came from somewhere behind her, deep and guttural, vibrating through the stillness. Aria’s breath hitched. She turned slowly and froze. Glowing eyes stared at her from the shadows. Not one pair, several. Wolves. Massive, unnaturally large wolves, their fur bristling under the slivers of sunlight that broke through the canopy. But what terrified her most wasn’t their size. It was the intelligence in their eyes. They weren’t just watching her. They were assessing her. A cold sweat broke out across her skin. She took a careful step back, then another. A deep, authoritative snarl cut through the air. The wolves stiffened. Then, as if commanded, they turned and disappeared into the forest. Aria’s pulse pounded in her ears. Her mind screamed at her to run. Instead, she turned in the direction of the snarl. Liam Grey stood at the edge of the clearing, his gaze unreadable. “I warned you,” he said, his voice dangerously low. Aria’s heart slammed against her ribs. “What the hell are you?” she whispered. Liam took a slow step toward her, his presence overwhelming. “Someone who just saved your life.” Aria stood frozen, her breath shallow as the weight of Liam Grey’s words hung between them. “Someone who just saved your life.” The wolves had obeyed him. He hadn’t been afraid of them, they had been afraid of him. The rational part of her mind wanted to explain it away. Maybe he was a trained tracker, a forest ranger, someone who knew how to handle wild animals. But that didn’t explain the way the wolves had looked at her. Liam watched her closely as if measuring how much to say. Then, with an almost imperceptible nod, he turned. “Come on,” he said. “You’re leaving the forest. Now.” Aria didn’t argue. The walk back to town was silent, but tension crackled between them. When they reached the main road, Liam finally spoke. “You’re new here,” he said. “So I’ll tell you this once: stay away from Silverclaw Forest.” Aria lifted her chin. “I don’t take orders from strangers.” A ghost of a smirk played on his lips. “Then you should know who I am.” She folded her arms. “Let me guess. You’re not just some local guy.” Liam’s smirk faded. He stepped closer, his presence almost overwhelming. “I’m the Alpha of the Silverclaw Pack.” Aria blinked. “The what?” “Alpha.” His voice was low and steady, as if daring her to challenge him. “And this town belongs to my pack.” A cold shiver traced down her spine. Aria had heard stories, legends of werewolves, and secret societies that ruled from the shadows, but that was all fantasy. Wasn’t it? She searched his face for any sign of deception. There was none. Liam Grey wasn’t joking. And that meant... “You’re telling me werewolves are real?” she whispered. Liam held her gaze. “I’m telling you that you don’t want to find out.” Before she could press him further, the sound of footsteps echoed behind them. “Liam!” A young man with shaggy brown hair jogged toward them, his expression tense. He was leaner than Liam, but there was a sharpness in his green eyes that reminded Aria of a wolf ready to pounce. “Your brother?” Aria guessed. The young man arched an amused brow. “Not quite.” He turned to Liam. “Alpha, we’ve got a problem. It’s happening again.” Liam stiffened. Aria noticed how his hands curled into fists. “What’s happening?” she asked. The young man hesitated, glancing at Liam. But it was Liam who answered. “Another disappearance.” Aria’s blood ran cold. Someone else had gone missing. And somehow, she sensed it wasn’t just a coincidence.
