The road to Moonshadow Falls was quiet, too quiet. Aria Thompson tightened her grip on the steering wheel as her old sedan hummed down the winding highway, flanked by endless pine trees. The setting sun cast long shadows across the road, and for a moment, she felt as if the forest was watching her. "Just nerves," she muttered, shaking off the eerie sensation. She had come here for a fresh start. After losing her job and her fiancé in the same month, Aria impulsively decided to accept a freelance journalism assignment in a town she had never heard of. The assignment? A deep dive into the local history and the strange disappearances that had earned Moonshadow Falls a place on urban legend forums. Her editor had laughed when she told him. "Small towns always have their ghost stories, Thompson. Just don’t go expecting werewolves or vampires." Aria had laughed, too, at that time. Now, as she drove into town, passing a "Welcome to Moonshadow Falls" sign half-covered in ivy, she began to feel uncertain. The town itself looked like something out of a postcard. Old-fashioned street lamps lined the cobblestone sidewalks, and quaint little shops stood in neat rows, their windows glowing warmly in the twilight. A coffee shop, a bookstore, a diner, the kind of place where everyone probably knew everyone. She pulled into a small inn, the Silver Moon Lodge, and checked in with an elderly woman who eyed her curiously but said nothing. The room was small but cozy, with a large window overlooking the dense forest surrounding the town. Aria dropped her bags and exhaled. Tomorrow, she will start her research. For now, she needed food. The Howl & Stag Tavern was busier than she expected for a town this size. The moment she stepped inside, a wave of heat and the scent of grilled meat hit her. Conversations hummed around her, but as soon as she walked in, they dipped if only for a moment. Eyes flickered toward her, assessing, before turning away. Aria straightened her shoulders. She was used to being the outsider. Sliding onto a barstool, she ordered a burger and a beer. While she waited, she flipped open her notebook and began jotting down her first impressions of the town. “You’re new here,” a deep, commanding voice said. Aria looked up and nearly forgot how to breathe. The man standing before her was tall, with dark, tousled hair and piercing gray eyes that seemed to see straight through her. Dressed in a fitted black shirt and jeans, he exuded raw power, the kind that made people instinctively take notice. Aria found her voice. “Yeah. Just got in today.” His gaze lingered on her for a moment too long. “Passing through?” “No. I’m a journalist. I’m here to write about the town.” Something flickered in his expression, disapproval? Amusement? It disappeared too quickly to tell. “You won’t find much worth writing about,” he said. Aria arched a brow. “Is that so?” He didn’t reply. Instead, he leaned in slightly, the air between them crackling with something unspoken. “This town has rules,” he said quietly. “It’s best if you don’t go looking for things that aren’t meant to be found.” A warning. Before she could respond, he straightened and walked away, disappearing into the crowd. Aria released a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. She didn’t know who he was, but something told her she had just met someone very important and very dangerous. His name, she would soon learn, was Liam Grey.
