Chapter 5

After the big revelation of her existence, Alexandra was left alone, trying to settle the storm of information inside her head. "My father is an Alpha… a king of werewolves? And my mother, a vampire? I dreamed of becoming a successful fantasy writer? writing a werewolves, vampires, that kind of stuff and now I’m actually one of them? She furrowed her brows, lost in her tangled thoughts, trying to make sense of what she had been told. “What about my father?” she had asked earlier to her friends. “We don’t know if he’s still alive or not,” came the answer. “No one has seen him since the failed proclamation eighteen years ago.” She was trying her best to digest the news. This impossibly strange, terrifying news about her family. “Am I supposed to believe all this?” she scoffed quietly to herself. She didn’t know what to think anymore. Could she trust any of them? She walked aimlessly around the room, her mind a fog. “Ow!” she winced as her little finger smacked into the bed’s corner. Rubbing the stinging spot, her eyes fell upon a bundle of gifts at her bedside. With a sigh, she picked one out and slowly unwrapped it. A dream catcher. It's from like Blite. “For your bad dreams,” it read in familiar handwriting. She smiled faintly, a warm ache blooming in her chest, eyes glistening with tears she didn’t want to fall. I just want to wake up. From all of this. A loud thud interrupted her thoughts. She looked up to find her friends crashing through the door literally landing on the floor. “Hey! I told you not to move too much!” Blite scolded Scott. “You were the one who pushed me,” Scott shot back, pointing to Walter. “What’s your problem? Why you pinch me?” Walter glared at Samantha. “It’s Samantha to you,” she snapped. “Oh, come on, guys. Not again,” Blite sighed, shaking his head. “Guys?” Alexandra raised a brow at the chaos. “Me first!” Scott blurted out, rushing forward. “No, me first!” Samantha yanked his collar. “You’re choking me!” “You deserve it!” “Continue. I’m first,” Walter brushed past them all. “I don’t think so,” Blite said, dragging Walter back by the hair. Then, as if on cue, they all shouted together: “Happy Birthday!!!” “Hm… thanks?” Alexandra blinked at them, unsure how to respond. “Hey, we know things happened… a lot of things happened,” Blite said, pulling her into a bone crushing hug, “but it’s still your birthday.” “Yeah,” Scott added, trying to lighten the mood. The others, however, kept their distance, visibly unsure of where they stood. “Happy birthday, Alexandra,” Samantha said, pulling a gift from behind her and holding it out. But Alexandra turned her head away. The girl who had once been her best friend since middle school who knew her better than anyone now seemed like a stranger. “You can open it later,” Samantha whispered sadly and placed the gift gently beside the others, then quietly exited the room. “Happy birthday,” Walter muttered awkwardly. Alexandra’s mind immediately recalled last night. Walter with blood dripping from his lips, draining another vampire. She shuddered. Then came Scott. “I know you didn’t see me for what I was, but I want to come clean,” he said with a grin. “Hi, I’m Scott. I’m a Vampire, too.” He paused, then added, “And before you decide to kick me out, I’ll save you the trouble. C’mon, Walter.” He tugged his friend along and the two walked out. “You okay, Alexandra?” Blite asked, concern written all over his face. “I’m not,” she admitted, burying her face in her hands. “I’m not okay with any of this.” Her voice broke, but she quickly swallowed the tears threatening to spill. She looked up, eyes narrowed. “How are you okay with this?” “Hey, I know it’s messed up, but can you believe it?” Blite said, her eyes sparkling. “We had two werewolf friends and one vampire this whole time! We used to just read about them in Dimple’z’s books, and now we’re living it.” “Do you even realize the depth of this situation?” Alexandra frowned at her, baffled by her excitement. “Come on, Alexandra! You get to be queen of them all, and that’s… that’s so cool!” Blite clapped her hands, thrilled. “I don’t believe any of that—Luna, Queen, whatever!” Alexandra shot back. “I’m just Alexandra. And I want to stay just Alexandra. If what they say is true, if I really had a family like that, why didn’t Mom ever tell me? Why did we live like normal humans all these years—until they showed up?” Her voice wavered. “If I really had powers, I would’ve felt them, right? But I don’t. Maybe I’m adopted. Maybe that’s why they think I’m Luna.” “You’re going to deny all of this?” Blite asked quietly. “I won’t deny that my mother is a vampire—I saw how her body changed. Maybe part of their story is true. But until I hear it from my mom herself, I can’t believe the rest.” “I know it’s all too absurd,” Blite said gently, “but they’re still our friends.” “I don’t know them,” Alexandra hissed. “Then give them a chance. Let them explain—” “Explain what? That they’ve been lying this whole time? One’s a blood-sucking monster, and the other two—ugh!” she growled in frustration. “What’s left to explain?” “They are not beasts or monster. They are wolves and vampire,” Blite corrected her. “We’ve always been there for each other,” she continued. “Our friendship is not so weak that we start hating each other just because they’re different. They protected us, Alex. We’re alive because of them. You can’t deny that.” “Fine,” Alexandra sighed. “I accept it. But that doesn’t mean I trust them. I can’t. I won’t. And I’m leaving.” “What? Where are you going?” Blite blinked. “I need to find my mom. Call your parents. Tell them to get us out of here,” Alexandra said, determination in her voice. Blite and Harry both nodded. “Great. Because when I get home, I will find Mom… and proof that I really am a wolf with vampire blood.”
