The Name In The Shadows

Kael led me to his private study even before sunrise. I didn't bother asking for permission. I just followed. If he discovered something worth finding, I intended to see it. He unlocked a cabinet. Dosen files stared back at me within the small cabinet. Most of them had Veyne's crest emblazoned on it. "You were investigating Darius," I said. "For months," he answered. "Why?" I then asked. Kael removed one file to pull one out. "Because wolves somehow connected to him were missing". I opened the file. Names. Dates. Locations. Several photos, and then I recognize a face.. Councilman Rowan Vale's father's old council member.. "He testified against my father". "He did." "He was missing then?" I whispered. "3 years ago." I looked up to Kael. "Why?" "Because he was ready to confess." My gut fell. "Confess to what?" Kael then gave me a paper to look at. It was his statement right before he vanished. 'Alpha Rowan Vale was wrongly framed, the order had come from higher up and that person had no relation to the council'. My eyes stung. "Who?". The rest of the writing on the paper had been ripped away. "That's all I have," Kael stated. "No" I shook my head. "What?" he asked. "The rest was taken". Kael nodded. " I had that thought too". He open another file as his eyes were focused in on something within it. He pulled out a map. Marked with a bright red line was the old Moonridge territory circled. "What's this?" I ask looking at Kael. "Your fathers old territory." "I know that part." "I want you to look again." Marked upon it were tunnels to be seen... "Where do they go?". "A hidden chamber under the ground". I gaze at him once again, " How can you be so sure?". "Because my father searched through it years ago, over 20 years back in fact". My chest started to hurt more. "Your father?" Kael nodded, " He thought your family had something they were hiding." "Hiding what?". " I still don't know that either." "Then how could my father destroy what you thought to be worthless, what people like me considered to be our savior then?". Kael's jaw tightened, " That's what I am trying to discover." I took myself away looking back at Kael, for so many years I thought of Kael as only another strong Alpha who could care nothing for 'lesser people like myself.' I suppose this now made that theory incorrect considering all the things he had shown me today. All of these files, that evidence, and he had not tried to protect me from any of it, only almost all of it. "There is one thing else." I look at Kael. He hands me a photo. It was a photograph.. Of my mother... She was alive, butolder than I had seen her ever be; She was standing in front of some bizarre looking stone structure of some kind. My breath held tight in my chest. "My mother...." "She may still be alive," Kael said. My fingers shook as I took the photo in my possession. "How long ago was this taken?". "Two years ago". I looked up at Kael, " Did you know?". " I suspected." " Why didn't you tell me?". " Because whoever sent this had clearly known you had been alive all this time," he looked up at my face. " They were watching you, your family, even before that photograph". Suddenly, there was a thud outside, a short three rap, on the door. Kael turned immediately the doorway. A guard stood outside. "alpha". "What is it?". "We found this near the northern border," he hand Kael a small black envelope. Kael opened it, his eye's widned slightly... "What is it?" he ask holding it out to me. It had a single line typed upon a single paper. The Vale heir has awaken. Inform Alpha Draven the Blood Moon is nigh. I went cold. "What is the blood moon?". Kael looked back to the window, the sun slowly beginning to peek its head above the horizon. "An ancient lunar phenomenon". "And?". His eye's met mine, " It makes every wolf with blood of old feel its power". I stared at the message as my vision blurred. " And then what?". Kael's voice dropped, "Then we learn what you truly are".
