Epilogue Sarah sat in an armchair, Mary asleep on her lap and a fire burning in the grate. For the first time in what felt like weeks, but was really only days, she felt she could relax a little. Josef had retired to his room, but was still in the house. No more attacks had been reported. Echtberg felt quieter, safer, than it had. Things weren’t good, though. Josef had told her about the arguments raging in the council chamber, about the political infighting and how those remaining after the attack were choosing to band together. He thought it might settle again in a few days… or it might blow up horribly. Daniel hadn’t returned. Josef had heard rumours that he’d been seen leaving the town around midday and hadn’t returned yet. Sarah hoped it wasn’t true, but she feared it was.
