Chapter 18
Daniel reached the end of the alleyway and emerged onto a street. He turned to the left and started to sprint forward… but found himself confronted by a large group of guards, forty at least. All had their weapons ready, and several were pointing crossbows straight at him. For a moment he slowed, then a roar from the alleyway reminded him that would be suicidal. He raised a shield and sprinted forwards.
“Run!” he yelled. “Something terrible is coming! Get out of the way!”
“Stop!” yelled the leader, a tall man with a hard set face. “Stop right now!”
Even as he shouted the order, one of his men unleashed a crossbow bolt straight for Daniel. It struck the shield and fell back, but two more bolts followed it as nervous guards squeezed a little too hard on the trigger.
