Chapter 32
Josef shoved at a brachen, then leapt past it, trying to reach Randalf and the Ghost. He could sense the darkness eating at Randalf’s soul and wanted desperately to stop it. He hadn’t liked Randalf, had disagreed with the man, but Randalf’s bravery in taking a blade for Daniel shouldn’t be repaid with such an awful fate.
Before Josef could get close he sensed Daniel forming a complex pattern of power, then striking at the point where Randalf’s soul was being dragged out. Somehow Daniel broke that link and Randalf fell to the floor, dead but at least released from torment.
The Ghost screamed, his back arching, then he turned and leapt for Daniel. Josef rushed forward with his sword, knowing he couldn’t stop the Ghost but hoping to deflect the worst of the damage.
