The Daughter of Sorrow
Sekinat Bello was a beautiful young girl of fourteen years residing in the ancient city of Ilorin, Kwara State. Her name means Peace and Tranquility yet her life was filled with sorrow and hardship. Being an orphan from her mother's side, she lived under the cruel guardianship of her wicked stepmother Mama Risqat and her two arrogant step-sisters Taiwo and Kehinde. To them, Sekinat was nothing but a free maid and object of ridicule. While her sisters slept comfortably on foam mattresses inside the room, Sekinat slept on a rough raffia mat in the kitchen corner beside firewood and ashes. Her daily routine began at four o'clock in the morning before the c**k crowed. As a devout Muslim girl, she started with her Tahajjud prayer beseeching Allah for strength and patience. Immediately after prayer, her labour commenced. She trekked two kilometers to the village stream to fetch heavy buckets of water. She swept the large compound, washed piles of dirty clothes, scrubbed cooking pots until they shone and prepared breakfast before waking her lazy step-relations. Any slight delay attracted heavy slaps and abusive words. Despite her domestic slavery, Sekinat attended Ansarudeen Grammar School where she endured another form of torture called Public Shame. Her school uniform was old, faded and torn at the knee which she patched with different coloured cloth. The most painful part was that SHE HAD NO SANDALS. Every morning she walked barefooted on sharp stones and hot tarred roads leaving scars on her tender feet. Upon entering the school gate, the mockery always commenced led by Folashade, the spoilt daughter of the richest Chief in town. Folashade always appeared in clean uniform with shining sandals and expensive bags. "Look at the beggar girl!" Folashade would shout pointing fingers. "See her dirty legs and rags! Is dust afraid of you?" The entire school would burst into laughter. Even Taiwo and Kehinde joined the chorus calling her "Family Disgrace". Sekinat kept her head low swallowing tears while whispering "Subhanallah, Allah sees my heart". Surprisingly amidst all these sufferings, Sekinat was the most brilliant student in the class. While rich children slept or played during lessons, she listened attentively writing with charcoal stick when she lacked pen. Mr Johnson the Mathematics teacher always wondered how such a tormented girl could possess such extraordinary wisdom. He secretly admired her resilience and began protecting her silently. If walking barefoot wounded her feet, HUNGER ATE HER BONE. Mama Risqat deliberately denied her feeding allowance claiming she must eat from her sweat. During break time when others brought delicious meals of rice, meat and pure water, Sekinat retreated silently to the foot of the big Mango Tree drinking only tap water to suppress her hunger pangs. One fateful Wednesday, the aroma of fried stew drifted directly to her nose making her dizzy with starvation. She sat alone weeping silently remembering her late mother and crying "Ya Allah why did You leave me in this wilderness?" Bowing her head in deep submission she prayed earnestly "Oh Allah the Great Provider! You feed birds in the bush and fish in the river. Do not forget Your poor servant. Grant me patience". Unbeknownst to her, Mr Johnson watched from a distance moved by her devotion and innocence. He decided to become Allah's instrument of mercy. Later that afternoon Sekinat discovered a paper bag containing bread and pure water placed secretly beside the tree with note "For the Daughter of Patience". Tears of joy rolled down her cheeks as she realized Allah truly answers prayers. However her troubles intensified at home. Mama Risqat grew jealous seeing Sekinat healthier. She increased her workload forcing her to fetch firewood from deep forest before school. Taiwo and Kehinde spat in her food and poured sand in her water pot. Sekinat endured everything telling herself "They can hurt my body but never my soul". She discovered that Suffering sharpens the mind while Poverty purifies the heart. She transformed her pain into academic excellence becoming the pride of Mr Johnson who continued supplying her books secretly. She understood clearly Poverty is temporary but Character lasts forever. One memorable Thursday during Moral Instruction class, Madam Grace the Principal asked a crucial question "WHO IS THE GREATEST PERSON IN SOCIETY?" Folashade jumped up proudly shouting "THE RICH MAN!" Taiwo screamed "THE CHIEF!" while others mentioned Politicians and Teachers. Madam Grace turned to the quiet corner asking "Sekinat Bello what is your opinion?" All eyes focused on the barefooted girl expecting foolishness. Sekinat stood up calmly and spoke with thunderous wisdom "Madam, the Greatest person is neither Rich nor Powerful. THE GREATEST PERSON IS ONE WHO SUFFERS YET FEARS ALLAH. WHO IS INSULTED BUT REMAINS SILENT. WHO IS HURT BUT CHOOSES TO FORGIVE. Wealth vanishes but Good Character remains eternal". DEAD SILENCE FILLED THE CLASSROOM. Madam Grace approached her with tears of joy saying "My Child you possess Royal Spirit hidden in rags". She took Sekinat under her wings buying her new uniform, leather sandals and complete set of books. For the first time Sekinat appeared like a true student. When she stepped into school yard wearing shoes, THE WHOLE SCHOOL GASPED IN SHOCK. Folashade turned green with envy while Taiwo and Kehinde gnashed their teeth in anger. But Sekinat remained humble greeting everyone including her mockers with respect. She combined Islamic devotion with hard work proving True Greatness originates from Inner Peace. She realized her silence was her weapon and her tears were seeds of Glory. When the time for Senior School Certificate Examination approached, Sekinat faced her greatest obstacle - Registration Fee. Mama Risqat laughed scornfully "Why waste money on useless pauper? School belongs to rich children like my daughters". Her father remained silent being completely dominated by his wife. Sekinat retreated to riverbank weeping bitterly questioning her destiny. Sitting by flowing water she remembered her identity as OMO OMI (Child of Water). She whispered to the river "Teach me your secret - Flow through obstacles without breaking". She embarked on three days dry fasting pouring her heart in prayer "Ya Allah open the way or give me strength to accept". ALLAH ANSWERED THROUGH HUMAN ANGELS. Madam Grace and Mr Johnson contributed secretly to pay her fees and purchase necessary textbooks. On registration day Madam Grace announced "Sekinat dry your tears. Allah provides from invisible sources". Sekinat knelt down crying "Indeed You never abandon the weeping child". During examination period Folashade and gang smuggled "Expo" answers while Taiwo and Kehinde copied blindly. But Sekinat entered hall with Holy Confidence armed only with knowledge and honesty. She prayed "Ya Allah let my success silence my enemies". Subject after subject she wrote flawlessly displaying brilliance beyond her years. Folashade was caught cheating and disqualified while her sisters copied wrong answers from dull mates. Sekinat walked out smiling knowing Honesty is the key to everlasting Glory. Three months later RESULT DAY ARRIVED shaking the entire Ilorin community. Crowds gathered at school ground including Chiefs, Parents and Students. Mama Risqat arrived proudly bragging about her daughters while Folashade arrived in luxurious car accompanied by her father. Madam Grace stood before microphone and declared "Today we shall separate GOLD FROM DUST". She announced results amidst tension: Folashade - Disqualified plus six failures; Taiwo - Pass only in Islamic Studies; Kehinde - Failed Maths and English. Then she shouted loudly "BELLOSEKINAT SEKINAT: FIVE DISTINCTIONS AND THREE CREDITS. BEST STUDENT IN KWARA STATE. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED". THE CROWD ERUPTED IN WILD SHOUTS. Mama Risqat collapsed in shame while Folashade fainted out of jealousy. Taiwo and Kehinde covered their faces in disgrace. Sekinat raised hands to heaven weeping "ALLAHU AKBAR! You have turned my night into glorious day". People who once spat at her now bowed respectfully. She proceeded to University of Ilorin studying Agricultural Science supported by Federal Scholarship. Years later she emerged as Professor and renowned Farmer returning home in Royal Style. She established Schools and Hospitals for Orphans and Poor children becoming Mother of the Needy in Kwara State. She forgave her stepmother and sisters but maintained dignified distance. Folashade later came begging for food and Sekinat showed mercy reminding her "Wealth is fleeting but Allah's Grace remains forever". Today the name BELLOSEKINAT echoes throughout Nigeria symbolizing PATIENCE AND TRIUMPH. Her story is taught in schools as living testimony that NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT. From walking barefooted on stones she now walks on Golden Carpet. From eating dry bread she now feeds thousands. From sleeping on kitchen mat she now rests in Royal Chambers. She proved to the world YOUR BACKGROUND DOES NOT DETERMINE YOUR FUTURE. As true Daughter of Water she flowed through every barrier remaining calm amidst storms until reaching her Ocean of Glory. SUFFERING WAS HER LADDER, PATIENCE WAS HER KEY AND ALLAH WAS HER GUIDE. FROM RAGS TO GOLD - SHE IS TRULY A QUEEN FOREVER.
