Chapter 12: The Bitter Cell

1223 Words
The walls of the holding cell were made of cold, grey concrete. A single dim lightbulb hung from the high ceiling. It cast long, ugly shadows across the small room. Laura sat on the very edge of a hard metal bench. Her hands were tucked deeply into the pockets of her stained jacket. She could not stop shivering. The air inside the police station was freezing. But the cold inside her chest was much worse. Every time she breathed, the damp air made her chest feel heavy. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the look on Leo’s face. He had looked at her with complete, freezing indifference. There was no anger in his eyes, and that was what hurt the most. If he was angry, it meant he still cared about her. It meant he still felt something. But he felt absolutely nothing for her now. To Leo, she was just a common criminal who had tried to ruin his business. She was a total stranger from a bad dream. From the cell next to hers, a loud, desperate crying echoed through the concrete hallway. It was Caleb. He had been screaming and begging the guards for a phone call for three hours straight. The officers had confiscated his expensive silk tie, and his hair was a messy disaster. The proud corporate manager who used to look down on everyone was completely gone. He looked small, pathetic, and broken. "This can't be happening to me," Caleb muttered loudly. His voice cracked with intense fear. He slammed his palms against the heavy iron bars of his cell. "Laura! Do you hear me? Your mother needs to find a way to get us out of here! If I go to prison, my career is completely finished! My life is over!" Laura did not move an inch. She did not even turn her head to look at him through the bars. "Shut up, Caleb," she whispered. Her voice was dead and flat. "Just shut up and be quiet." "What did you say to me?" Caleb hissed. His eyes twisted with sudden rage. He gripped the bars tightly. "You're the one who wanted to go to the port! You're the one who dropped that tray at the restaurant and made him hate us even more! If you had just handled your husband properly during those three years, we would be riding in luxury cars right now! We would be rich! This is all your fault, Laura!" Hearing his words, something inside Laura finally snapped. A heavy wave of bitter resentment washed over her entire heart. She stood up slowly from the metal bench. She walked over to the iron bars, her eyes burning with pure hatred. "My fault?" Laura said. Her deep voice cut through his frantic screams. "Every single day for three years, you sat at my dining table and ate the food Leo cooked. You called him a useless loser while you chewed his food. You told him he was at the absolute bottom of the food chain." "My mother treated him like a dog. And I was stupid enough to listen to both of you. I threw away a man who would have given me the universe just to please your massive arrogance. Don't you dare blame me for this grave you dug for yourself." Caleb opened his mouth to scream back at her, but the heavy metal door at the end of the hallway suddenly opened with a loud, mechanical click. A police officer walked into the dark corridor. His black leather boots clicked sharply against the concrete floor. Behind him walked Brenda. Laura's mother looked completely unrecognizable. The proud, status-obsessed woman who used to boast about luxury brands was entirely gone. She was wearing a cheap, wrinkled sweater. Her face was incredibly pale, and her eyes were bright red from crying all night long. She clutched a worn canvas purse against her chest with trembling hands, looking around the dark hallway in pure terror. "Aunt Brenda!" Caleb yelled desperately. He lunged forward against the bars. "Did you bring the bail money? Did you speak to the police chief? Get me out of this place right now!" Brenda dropped straight to her knees right in front of the cells. She sobbed loudly as she reached her shaking hands through the bars toward her daughter. "Laura... oh, my poor beautiful girl! The lawyers won't even look at our case files! The moment they hear the name Global Vanguard Group, they hang up the phone in absolute terror!" "No one in this entire city wants to fight against Leo! They say it is financial suicide!" Laura looked down at her kneeling mother. A cold, bitter smile crept across her lips. "Of course they won't help us, Mother. Leo owns the banks. He owns the law firms. He owns the very air we breathe. Did you really think your loud mouth could save us from a multi-billionaire king?" "I went to the corporate headquarters, Laura!" Brenda wept. Her body shook violently on the cold concrete floor. "I dropped to my knees right in the grand lobby! I begged the security guards to let me see Leo! I told them I always loved him like a true son! I promised we would serve him for the rest of our lives if he just dropped the charges!" "And what happened?" Laura asked. Her heart sank even deeper into a dark pit of despair. "Marcus came down to the lobby," Brenda whispered. Her voice cracked with pure terror. "He didn't even let me step near the elevators. He didn't even look at me. He just handed me a legal document." "Leo has frozen our remaining bank accounts because of the unpaid mortgage debts on the apartment. We are being officially evicted from the building this afternoon by the bank.Everything we own is being seized by the state. We have absolutely nothing left, Laura! We are completely homeless on the streets!" Caleb let out a loud, pathetic gasp. His knees turned to complete jelly as he slid down the iron bars onto the floor. His eyes were wide with pure horror. "No... no! My career, my luxury watch, my house... it's all gone!" Laura slowly turned her back on her weeping family. She walked back to the hard metal bench and sat down heavily, staring blankly at the rough concrete wall in front of her. She did not cry anymore. Her tears had completely dried up, leaving only a cold, hollow feeling inside her stomach. She remembered the beautiful golden lights of Leo’s grand villa shining brightly on top of the mountain cliff. She remembered the warm, protective way he had wrapped his strong arm around Olivia's waist to shield her from the broken glass at the restaurant. He was giving Olivia the exact royal life that she had always demanded from him, while she was left to rot in a freezing cell. She was completely ruined by her own toxic pride and her family's endless greed. The heavy metal door at the end of the hallway slammed shut with a deafening boom. It locked Laura, Brenda, and Caleb inside their own self-made nightmare, completely hidden from the bright, wealthy world above. They had wanted status, but now their only status was that of prisoners in the dark.
