Chapter 1: The Last Straw
Leo stood alone at the kitchen sink, His arms were deep inside the warm, greasy water, up to his elbows.. The harsh overhead light of the kitchen buzzed softly, casting long, tired shadows across the counter. With a rough sponge, he scrubbed the thick residue of garlic and expensive butter off a heavy porcelain serving platter. His back ached from standing for three hours straight. He had spent the entire afternoon rushing from one grocery store to another, searching for the exact vintage wine and rare cuts of meat his wife had demanded for her family gathering.
From the dining room down the hallway, a loud burst of laughter erupted, followed by the high-pitched clinking of expensive crystal glasses. His wife, Laura, was hosting a grand celebration party. Her family had gathered to celebrate her cousin Caleb’s minor promotion at a local firm. Leo, however, had not been invited to sit at the long mahogany table. He hadn't even been allowed to pour the wine in their presence. To Laura’s family, Leo was an eyesore. He was not treated like a husband or a family member. He was treated like a mute, live-in servant who came with the apartment.
For three long, agonizing years, Leo had endured every bit of this humiliation without a single word of complaint. He had quietly cooked their extravagant meals, scrubbed their marble floors until his knees bled, and swallowed their endless insults. He had done it all because of a promise, and because of a test. Three years ago, before his wealthy father passed away, he had left Leo a massive multi-billion-dollar empire called the Global Vanguard Group. But his father had also left a strict condition in his will. Leo had to live as a completely regular, broke citizen for three years without touching a single penny of his inheritance. His father wanted him to understand the true struggles of life, and more importantly, he wanted Leo to find a woman who would love him truly for his heart, and not for his infinite bank account.
So, Leo had hidden his true identity. He pretended to be a penniless, unemployed orphan. He took every insult thrown at him, comforting himself with the thought that once the three years were over, he would give Laura the world. But as the months turned into years, Laura changed. The sweet girl he had met in college vanished, replaced by a bitter, status-obsessed woman who listened to her toxic family's whispers.
"Leo! Get in here right now! Are you falling asleep over those dishes?"
The sharp, piercing voice of his mother-in-law, Brenda, shattered his thoughts, cutting through the kitchen like a whip.
Leo quietly rinsed the soap off his hands, dried them thoroughly with a worn kitchen towel, and walked down the brightly lit hallway into the grand dining room. The air in the room was thick with the scent of roasted meat and expensive cologne. Gathered around the long glass table were Laura, her parents, and Caleb. Caleb was wearing a flashy new watch, his suit jacket draped over the back of his chair as he grinned like a king who had just conquered the world.
"Is there a problem, mother?" Leo asked quietly, keeping his hands by his side and his voice perfectly calm.
Brenda looked up at him, her eyes twisting with pure, unadulterated disgust. She picked up a white cloth from the table and tossed it directly at Leo’s chest. It hit him and slid to the floor. "Look at the marble counter near the wine rack, you useless loser. You missed a massive spot of dust. Honestly, I don't know why Laura keeps a lazy, broke dog like you around this house. My daughter is a beautiful, highly successful marketing manager. She should be riding in luxury cars and attending high-society galas. Instead, she is married to a man who can't even afford to buy her a decent pair of shoes."
Caleb laughed loudly, swirling the dark red wine in his glass with pure arrogance. He leaned back in his leather chair, looking down his nose at Leo. "Cut him some slack, Aunt Brenda. Some people are just born to be at the absolute bottom of the food chain. They don't have the brains or the drive to achieve anything in life. Hey Leo, when you're finally finished playing maid in the kitchen, go downstairs into the parking lot and wipe the rain dust off my new luxury car. Try to be careful with your rough hands; the custom paint job on that vehicle costs more than your entire miserable life."
Leo’s fists clenched tightly inside his pockets, the fabric tearing slightly under the pressure of his grip. He felt a hot, dangerous spark ignite deep within his chest. For three years, he had kept that dragon asleep. He forced his facial muscles to relax, remaining completely blank. Slowly, he turned his gaze away from the mocking faces of Brenda and Caleb, locking his eyes onto his wife. Laura sat at the head of the table, her fingers nervously tracing the rim of her glass. Leo looked at her desperately, silently begging her with his eyes to stand up for him, to say something—anything—to defend the man who loved her.
But Laura did not look back at him. She stared fixedly down at her plate, her face flushed with deep embarrassment. Over the last year, she had grown completely tired of her corporate friends asking why her husband didn't have a real job, why he didn't drive a sports car, or why he was never present at company dinners. She had allowed her family’s poison to completely fill her mind.
"Laura," Leo said softly, his deep voice cutting through Caleb’s ugly laughter. "Do you truly agree with what they are saying?"
Laura finally raised her head, her eyes cold, distant, and completely devoid of the warmth they used to hold. She slammed her wine glass down onto the table with a sharp, echoing click. "I'm tired, Leo. I am so incredibly tired of the whispers behind my back at the office. I am tired of my parents having to help us with the extra bills while you just sit around this apartment doing nothing but cleaning and cooking. Look at Caleb. He is moving up in the world, achieving big things. And you? You're just a heavy, miserable burden on my shoulders. I can't do this anymore."
She reached down into her designer leather handbag, pulled out a neat, crisp white folder, and slid it forcefully across the smooth glass table. The folder slid forward, stopping right against Leo’s hands.
Printed across the top in bold, black letters were the words: DIVORCE AGREEMENT.
"Sign it," Laura said, her voice trembling slightly, but her gaze remaining completely hard and unyielding. "I want a divorce, Leo. It’s officially over. You get absolutely nothing from this marriage, because you brought nothing into it. You have until twelve o'clock tonight to pack your trash and get out of my apartment."
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the grand dining room. Brenda smiled triumphantly, crossing her arms as if she had just won a war. Caleb smirked wickedly, leaning forward to watch Leo break. They fully expected Leo to burst into tears. They expected him to drop to his knees, grab Laura’s dress, and beg like a dog for her forgiveness and another chance.
Instead, Leo stood perfectly still. He let out a long, slow, deep breath. In that single moment, the heavy, invisible chains he had been wearing for three long years completely shattered. The three-year restriction set by his father’s will was ending at midnight tonight anyway—but Laura couldn't even wait a few more hours. The final test of her love was over, and the answer was crystal clear. She didn't love him. She never had. She only loved status.
A chilling, dangerous smile slowly crept across Leo's lips. He stood up to his full height, his broad shoulders expanding and his posture shifting instantly. In a flash, the aura of a humble, submissive house-husband completely vanished. It was replaced by the crushing, terrifying, and majestic presence of a powerful billionaire king.
"A burden?" Leo whispered, his voice dropping into a low, resonant register that suddenly made the air in the luxurious dining room feel completely freezing.
He didn't pick up the silver pen on the table. Instead, he reached into his faded jeans and pulled out his old, cracked mobile phone. For three years, he had kept this phone on a private network, never making a single outside call. He dialed a highly classified ten-digit number that he knew by heart. He placed the phone to his ear, his sharp, dark eyes locking directly onto Laura’s face. Laura’s heart suddenly skipped a beat. For some strange reason she couldn't understand, the man standing before her suddenly looked infinitely taller, grander, and more terrifying than anyone she had ever met.
"Sir?" a frantic, trembling, yet highly professional voice answered on the very first ring from the other side of the line. "Is that truly you, Young Master?"
"It's me, Marcus," Leo said, his voice ringing out with absolute, supreme authority that brooked no argument. "The three-year restriction is officially over. The test is finished. Activate my primary bank accounts immediately. Unfreeze the global assets. And send the main fleet to the luxury apartments right now. It is time for the King to return to his throne."
"Right away, Young Master! We have been waiting for this day for three years!" Marcus gasped on the phone, his voice filled with pure excitement.
Leo hung up the phone with a smooth motion and tossed it carelessly onto the glass table, right on top of the divorce papers. He looked down at Laura, who was staring at him with a mixture of confusion and sudden fear.
"You want a divorce, Laura?" Leo asked, his voice completely calm, smooth, and absolute. "Fine. I will sign it. But remember this exact room, and remember this exact choice. Because tomorrow morning, you and your entire arrogant family will realize exactly what you just threw into the dirt."
With a steady hand, Leo picked up the pen and signed his name at the bottom of the document. He turned around without looking back, walking into his small room to grab his backpack. His time as a ghost was over. The billionaire king was back, and the city was about to tremble.
