The silence inside the dining room was very heavy. Laura stood completely still by the glass table. Her eyes moved back and forth between the signed divorce papers and the dark hallway where her husband had just gone. Her heart beat very fast. For three long years, Leo had been a quiet, simple man. He never yelled. He always did what she asked. But the man who had just stood in her room felt like a total stranger. His last words made her skin feel cold and uneasy.
"The King?" Caleb laughed, but his voice sounded weak and nervous. He shook his head and poured more wine into his glass. "Who does that poor loser think he is calling? An acting company? Honestly, Laura, that was just a funny show. He knows he is a broke nobody with no money. He is just trying to scare us with a fake phone call. Just let him pack his bags and get out of here."
"You are right," Brenda sneered, crossing her arms tightly as she stared at the hallway. "Do you think a fake phone call on an old, broken phone can scare this family? He has exactly ten minutes to take his things and get out of my sight. If he stays any longer, I will call the building security to drag him out into the street."
Laura did not say anything to her mother or her cousin. She reached out with a shaking hand and picked up the white folder. She stared at the signature at the bottom of the page. Leo had written his name in a beautiful, strong, and confident way. It looked like the handwriting of a powerful world leader, not a man who stayed home all day. A tight knot of fear began to grow inside Laura's stomach. "Leo... where will he go?" she whispered softly. "He has no friends in this city. He has no job. He has absolutely no money."
"That is not your problem anymore, Laura," Brenda snapped, tapping her long nails on the table. "You are finally free from him. Tomorrow, you can look for a successful man who actually has a high status. A man who is rich like Caleb’s bosses."
Before Laura could answer her mother, a deep, heavy rumbling sound came from the street below. At first, it sounded like a distant thunderstorm moving across the night sky. But within a few seconds, the shaking grew so strong that the wine glasses on the table began to rattle. The heavy glass doors leading to the balcony shook loudly.
It was the deep, loud roar of many expensive car engines down on the street. It did not sound like regular cars. It was a terrifying, powerful sound that demanded everyone to look.
Caleb frowned and put his wine glass down. He looked very confused. "What is that noise? Is there a street race happening? Or did the police arrive?" He stood up and walked quickly toward the balcony doors. He pushed the glass doors open, stepped out into the cool night air, and looked over the railing.
The moment Caleb looked down at the main entrance of the building, his face turned completely white. His hands began to shake violently. The glass of wine slipped right out of his fingers. It hit the balcony floor and broke into a hundred sharp pieces, splashing red wine all over his expensive shoes. Caleb’s mouth hung wide open, and his eyes were filled with absolute horror.
"Caleb? What is it? What is happening down there?" Laura asked, her heart beating fast against her ribs as she ran out onto the balcony. Brenda followed right behind her.
When Laura looked down at the street, she could barely breathe from the shock.
The entire big street directly under their luxury apartment building had been completely blocked off. Flashing blue and red lights from private security vehicles formed a wall at both ends of the block. Standing perfectly in a line in the middle of the dark road was a grand procession of ten identical, shiny black luxury cars. The expensive black paint reflected the streetlights like water. On the hood of every single car was a glowing gold emblem—the royal crest of the Global Vanguard Group, the largest and richest company in the nation.
Dozens of elite security guards in matching black suits stood at attention along the pavement. They formed a human wall to keep the curious neighbors and regular crowd back.
At the front of the line, the door of the lead luxury car opened. An older gentleman with neat silver hair stepped out into the night. He wore a beautiful, expensive grey suit. It was Marcus, the chief assistant to the supreme leader of the giant global empire. He carried a shiny gold folder under his arm, his eyes looking sharply at the lobby doors.
"No... there is no way," Caleb stammered, his knees shaking so much he had to hold the balcony railing to stand. His voice cracked with panic. "That is the official fleet of the Global Vanguard Group. Why are they here? Even the mayor of this city cannot get that level of security!"
Brenda’s mouth twisted as she stared down, completely unable to understand what was happening. "Are they here for a famous person? Did a rich politician move into our building?"
Back inside the living room, the quiet click of a door handle made Laura spin around quickly.
Leo walked out of his small storage room. He looked exactly the same as he did a few minutes ago. He was wearing his faded denim jacket, his old jeans, and carrying a cheap backpack over one shoulder. But the way he stood was entirely different. He walked with long, slow, and powerful steps. The weak house-husband was gone. In his place was a majestic leader who dominated the whole room.
"Goodbye, Laura," Leo said softly. He turned his back on them, opened the front door, and walked out into the hallway.
A sudden, desperate feeling exploded in Laura’s chest. The sight of him walking away filled her with fear. "Leo! Wait! Stop!" she screamed. She left her mother and cousin on the balcony and ran toward the front door.
Brenda and Caleb ran right after her. Their faces were pale with confusion as Laura chased Leo down the long hallway toward the elevators. Leo had already stepped into the massive elevator. Laura, Brenda, and Caleb scrambled inside just before the heavy metal doors slid shut.
The silence inside the elevator was deafening. Laura stood right next to Leo, looking at his face in the mirrors. Leo did not look at her. He did not look at Brenda or Caleb. He stood perfectly straight, his hands in his pockets, his eyes looking calmly at the floor numbers counting down: 5... 4... 3... 2... 1.
Ding.
The doors slid open, revealing the grand marble lobby of the building.
The moment Leo’s boots stepped through the glass doors and out into the cool night air, a sharp command was yelled. Instantly, every single security guard dropped their head, bowing at a perfect ninety-degree angle.
"Welcome back, Young Master!" the men shouted together, their loud voices booming across the street.
Marcus walked forward quickly, his polished leather shoes clicking sharply on the pavement. He stopped right in front of Leo. Without waiting, the powerful executive dropped down to one knee on the cold concrete, lowering his head with absolute respect. He held up the gold folder with both hands.
"Young Master Leo," Marcus said clearly so everyone could hear. "The three-year restriction your father placed on your inheritance has officially ended. Your bank accounts holding eighty billion dollars are now fully active. The entire global empire is yours to rule once more.
"Leo looked down at the older man, his face completely calm, as if this massive wealth was a normal thing. "Rise, Marcus," Leo said softly. "Let's go home. I am finished here."
"Right away, sir," Marcus stood up fast, turning to open the door of the lead luxury car. He held his hand over the door to protect Leo.
On the concrete steps of the building, Laura, Brenda, and Caleb stood completely frozen. The cool wind blew against them, but their bodies felt totally numb, like their blood had turned to ice.
Laura stared at her ex-husband—the man she had forced to wash her dirty dishes, the man her mother called a broke dog, the man she had just divorced because he was a burden. He was not a poor orphan. He was the sole owner of the most powerful empire in the land.
"Leo..." Laura whispered, her voice cracking as a heavy tear of pure regret ran down her pale cheek. She took a desperate step down the stairs, reaching her shaking hand out toward the car. "Leo, please... wait! Let me explain..."
Leo paused before stepping into the luxurious car. He turned his head slightly, his sharp eyes locking onto Laura’s desperate face one last time. He did not look at her with anger or hatred. He simply looked at her with complete, freezing indifference, as if she were a total stranger.
"The divorce is signed, Laura," Leo said, his deep voice very calm. "You wanted me out of your life because I had nothing. Now, you have exactly what you asked for."
He stepped inside, and Marcus closed the heavy door with a loud, expensive thud that shattered all of Laura's hopes. The entire fleet of ten black luxury vehicles moved forward smoothly, disappearing into the bright lights of the city. They left Laura, Brenda, and Caleb standing alone in the dark street, completely ruined by their own arrogance.
