Chapter 9: Shattered Mirrors

1652 Words
Meanwhile, down on the main floor of the exclusive restaurant, a completely dark, cold, and miserable scene was unfolding at the exact same time. Laura was standing near the hot kitchen doors, wearing a cheap, stained apron and holding a heavy tray of dirty dishes. Her feet ached terribly from standing all day, and her hands were rough from scrubbing tables. After being demoted at her firm and losing her family's steady wealth, she had been forced to take a low-paying, part-time job as a waitress just to help pay her apartment rent. She felt deeply humiliated every time she had to serve rich customers who used to look up to her. "Table four on the private VIP balcony needs their main dessert cleared away immediately!" the kitchen manager yelled loudly, shoving a silver tray into Laura’s hands. "Move your feet quickly, Laura! These are elite guests, and if they make even one small complaint, you are fired on the spot!" "Yes, sir," Laura whispered miserably, wiping a rogue tear from her cheek. She took the heavy tray and walked slowly up the grand marble staircase toward the VIP balcony, keeping her eyes fixed firmly on the floor out of sheer shame. She approached the candle-lit table and reached out her shaking hand to clear away the empty plates. But the moment she heard a deep, familiar masculine laugh, she froze completely on the spot. Her breath caught tightly in her throat. Laura slowly raised her head. Her eyes went wide with absolute shock and total agony. Sitting right in front of her was Leo. He looked incredibly handsome, wealthy, and grand, wearing a flawless silk suit jacket. He was leaning forward, his large hand gently resting near Olivia’s small, warm hand on the white tablecloth. Olivia was smiling beautifully, her eyes shining with absolute devotion as she looked back at him. They looked like a perfect, powerful, and deeply romantic couple. "Leo...?" Laura gasped out loud, her voice cracking with deep, agonizing regret. The heavy silver tray of dirty dishes slipped completely from her trembling fingers. It crashed onto the polished floor with a loud, shattering thud, splashing remnants of food and broken glass everywhere around the table. Olivia startled at the sudden noise, stepping back slightly in her chair, but Leo reacted instantly. In a smooth, effortless, and highly protective motion, Leo stood up and stepped directly in front of Olivia, shielding her body from the flying glass shards. He wrapped his strong, muscular arm securely around Olivia's waist, pulling her close against his broad chest to ensure she was completely safe. "Are you hurt, Olivia?" Leo asked, his voice dropping into an incredibly tender, protective tone as he looked down at her face, completely ignoring the mess. "I am okay, Leo," Olivia whispered, her cheeks turning bright pink as she leaned into his solid, warm embrace. The electric spark between them was completely undeniable at that moment. Leo stood up straight and turned his head to look at the waitress. The moment his sharp, dark eyes landed on Laura’s dirty apron, stained clothes, and messy hair, his face turned completely cold, matching the freezing winter air. "Leo! Please, listen to me!" Laura sobbed loudly, dropping straight to her knees right in the middle of the broken glass, completely ignoring her pride. She reached her hands out desperately toward his expensive leather shoes. "Look at what I have been reduced to! My family is going bankrupt, and I am working like a slave here! Please, remember our three years of marriage! Have mercy on me and take me back! I will do anything you want, I promise!" Leo looked down at her kneeling form with complete, freezing indifference. He did not show a single ounce of anger, and he showed no pity. He simply looked at her as if she were a total stranger who was causing an annoying, loud scene in public. "You chose to throw away your crown, Laura," Leo said, his deep voice carrying a terrifying, absolute weight that echoed on the balcony. "You called me a burden and kicked me out of your house when you thought I had nothing. Now, you are seeing the true reality of your own choice. I have absolutely nothing left to say to you." The restaurant manager ran up the marble stairs, his face bright red with intense panic. "Mr. Leo! I am so incredibly sorry for this disgusting disturbance to your dinner! This waitress is completely incompetent! Guards, drag this woman out of the restaurant and terminate her contract immediately!" Two large security guards forcefully grabbed Laura by her arms, lifting her off the floor. She wept, screamed out Leo's name, and begged for mercy as they dragged her down the marble stairs in front of all the wealthy diners, completely ruining what little reputation she had left in the city. Leo didn't waste a single second watching her go. He turned back to Olivia, his gaze becoming instantly warm, gentle, and tender once more. He gently took her small hand back in his. "Let’s leave this place, Olivia. I know a much quieter, beautiful spot where we can finish our evening together without any noise." Olivia looked up into his dark eyes, her heart racing with a beautiful, thrilling feeling of love, excitement, and absolute safety. She squeezed his large hand tightly. "I will go anywhere with you, Leo." Laura walked slowly down a dark, narrow alleyway, her body shivering violently from the freezing night wind. She was no longer wearing her waitress apron. The angry restaurant manager had thrown her personal clothes into the wet dirt and kicked her out of the building without paying her a single penny for her hard work because of the mess she made. Her knees were scraped and bleeding from when she had dropped directly onto the broken glass shards to beg Leo for mercy. She finally reached the rusty metal door of a cheap, run-down apartment building in the poorest district of the city. The narrow hallway smelled heavily of old garbage and damp mold. This was the only place her mother, Brenda, had been able to rent after the Global Capital Bank called in their massive mortgage loan and evicted them from their proud luxury home earlier that afternoon. Laura pushed open the flimsy wooden door of the small apartment. The room was tiny, containing only a broken sofa, a rusty table, and a few cardboard boxes filled with their remaining clothes. Brenda was sitting on the cold floor, her expensive designer dress now wrinkled and covered in grey dirt. Her face looked old, tired, and completely defeated. Caleb was sitting in a dark corner, his head buried deeply in his hands, staring blankly at the floor. His expensive new watch was completely gone, sold earlier that afternoon just to buy a few basic groceries and water. "Laura!" Brenda gasped, jumping up from the floor with a desperate, frantic look in her eyes. "What happened at the luxury restaurant? Did you get the tips? Do you have cash for the electricity bill? They are going to shut off our power in less than one hour!" Laura did not answer her mother right away. She walked slowly to the center of the tiny room, her eyes completely dull, empty, and dead. She let her cheap plastic bag drop heavily to the floor. "I was fired, Mother," Laura said, her voice completely flat, lacking any life or energy. "I was forcefully thrown out into the street by the building security guards." "What?!" Caleb yelled, slamming his fists onto the rusty table as he stood up quickly. His face was twisted with extreme anger and panic. "How could you get fired from a basic waitress job? We need that money to survive this week! I am blacklisted across the entire nation! No logistics company will ever hire me! You were our only hope to buy food!" "I saw Leo," Laura whispered, a single, heavy tear of pure regret rolling down her pale cheek. The entire small room instantly fell into a suffocating, terrifying silence. Brenda froze on the spot, her mouth hanging wide open in shock. Caleb’s loud anger vanished instantly, replaced by a cold wave of fear in his chest. "You... you saw Leo?" Brenda stammered, her hands shaking violently as she gripped her dirty dress. "Did you talk to him? Did you tell him that the divorce papers were just a massive mistake? Did you tell him that I always loved him like a true son?" Laura let out a loud, bitter laugh that sounded close to absolute madness. She looked at her mother with eyes full of intense resentment and pain. "A son? Mother, you called him a lazy, broke dog every single night! You threw a dirty cloth directly at his chest and told him he was a miserable burden on my shoulders! Caleb, you told him he was at the absolute bottom of the food chain and demanded he wipe the rain dust off your luxury car!" "We didn't know!" Caleb screamed out, his voice cracking with pure, unadulterated terror. "If we knew he was the supreme leader of the multi-billion-dollar Global Vanguard Group, we would have served him on our knees every day! Why didn't that liar just tell us his true identity?!" "Because he was testing our hearts," Laura sobbed loudly, dropping heavily onto the broken sofa. She covered her face with her hands, her shoulders shaking violently as she wept in absolute agony. "He wanted to see if we had a single ounce of human decency. He wanted to see if I loved him for his soul, not his bank account. And I failed the test completely. I listened to your toxic whispers every day. I wanted luxury cars, expensive shoes, and high-society status. And now, look at what my pride has brought us!"
