CHAPTER 50: After the fall

“No…” The word escaped Lucifer like a wound. The golden corridor of Solmere glowed brighter around them while the celestial memory stood silently ahead, silver wings spread wide behind him like living starlight. Heaven could not breathe for a moment. Because now— Standing beside the Lucifer she knew— She could finally see the difference. The memory version radiated warmth. Not innocence. Power. Confidence untouched by centuries of pain. His silver hair shimmered beneath celestial light while enormous wings curved gracefully behind him, unscarred and whole. Beautiful beyond reason. Yet the most shocking part— Was his eyes. Still crimson. Still Lucifer. Only softer. Untainted by loneliness. Heaven slowly looked toward the Lucifer beside her. His expression had gone completely unreadable. But the mate bond betrayed him instantly. Shock. Grief. Rage. And something dangerously close to shame. The memory version smiled gently toward Heaven again. Then his gaze shifted toward Lucifer. For the first time— The two versions of him looked at one another. The atmosphere changed instantly. The corridor trembled softly beneath their feet while the celestial rivers flowing through the marble floor pulsed brighter. Lucifer’s shadows moved sharply around him. Defensive. Uneasy. The memory version spoke first. “You returned.” The voice sounded exactly like Lucifer’s. Only lighter. Untouched. Lucifer’s jaw tightened immediately. “This place enjoys cruelty.” The winged version tilted his head slightly. “Or perhaps honesty.” Heaven felt pain twist through the mate bond. Because Lucifer hated this. Not the temple. Not the memory. The reminder. The reminder of who he once had been. The celestial version stepped forward slowly. Golden light moved around him like living divinity. “You still carry the darkness.” Lucifer laughed coldly. “And you still speak like heaven’s obedient soldier.” The memory did not react angrily. Instead— It looked sad. The expression startled Heaven more than anything else. Because somehow the memory version pitied Lucifer. And Lucifer clearly despised that. “You are not real,” Lucifer said sharply. “No,” the celestial version agreed softly. “I am what remains.” Silence crashed through the corridor. Heaven carefully stepped between them slightly. “Why is this happening?” The temple answered through the glowing walls. Solmere reveals truth. The celestial version looked toward Heaven gently. “You carry the Wellspring Flame.” “I know.” “But you do not understand it yet.” The golden light around him shifted softly. “The flame was born from balance. Creation and destruction. Light and shadow.” His gaze moved toward Lucifer briefly. “Love and ruin.” The mate bond pulsed uneasily. Heaven frowned slightly. “What does that mean?” The celestial memory stepped closer again. And Lucifer immediately moved protectively beside her. The old instinct remained even against himself. The memory noticed. A faint smile touched his lips. “You still protect others before yourself.” Lucifer’s expression hardened. “Enough.” The shadows around him darkened sharply. But the memory remained calm. “You hate me.” The direct statement echoed heavily. Lucifer looked away immediately. And Heaven suddenly understood. Lucifer did not hate the memory because it judged him. He hated it because it reminded him of everything he lost. The celestial version spoke softly. “You blame me for becoming this.” Lucifer’s voice came dangerously quiet. “I blame you for believing heaven would ever accept freedom.” Pain shook through the bond violently. Ancient pain. Centuries old. The memory’s silver wings dimmed faintly. “Heaven feared change.” “They feared choice.” “And you answered fear with war.” Lucifer’s expression cracked. Not visibly. Emotionally. Heaven felt it instantly. Guilt. Buried beneath rage for centuries. The realization stunned her. Lucifer carried guilt over the fall. Real guilt. The memory stepped closer. “You wanted liberation.” “Yes.” “But pride blinded you.” The shadows around Lucifer lashed violently across the corridor. “I said enough.” The temple trembled. Golden light and darkness collided sharply around them. Heaven immediately grabbed Lucifer’s hand. The contact grounded him slightly. The mate bond surged warm against the chaos. Lucifer inhaled slowly afterward. Trying to regain control. The celestial version watched quietly. Then softly— “She calms you.” Heaven felt Lucifer stiffen beside her. The memory smiled faintly. “You love her completely.” Lucifer looked genuinely irritated now. “This temple speaks too much.” But he never denied it. Not anymore. The celestial version turned toward Heaven again. “And you love him.” Heat rose faintly into her cheeks despite everything. “Yes.” The answer came easily. Naturally. Lucifer’s gaze snapped briefly toward her. The mate bond flooded warmly. The memory version looked at them both silently. Then his expression saddened again. “The flame will test that love.” The warmth vanished instantly. Heaven’s chest tightened. “How?” The celestial version slowly raised one hand. Golden light appeared above his palm. Within it— A vision formed. Heaven gasped softly. The vision showed Hell burning. Massive infernal towers collapsing beneath rivers of celestial fire while demons screamed across endless darkness. Lucifer stood alone at the center of it all. Watching his kingdom die. And above him— Heaven floated surrounded completely by golden flame. Not mortal anymore. Something divine. Something terrifying. Lucifer’s expression went cold instantly. “Stop.” But the vision continued. Heaven in the vision reached toward Lucifer desperately. Crying. Begging. Yet celestial chains wrapped around her body while the flame consumed everything around them. And Lucifer— Lucifer smiled sadly at her before stepping backward willingly into the fire. The vision shattered. Silence followed. Terrible silence. Heaven felt sick. Lucifer’s shadows had gone deathly still. “What was that?” she whispered. The celestial version answered quietly. “One possible future.” Lucifer’s voice became lethal. “I will destroy this temple stone by stone.” The memory ignored the threat. “The Wellspring Flame demands balance.” Heaven shook her head weakly. “No.” The celestial version looked toward her sadly. “If the flame fully awakens, you may one day be forced to choose.” Lucifer immediately stepped in front of her again. “There will be no choice.” The memory’s gaze settled heavily on him. “You cannot fight destiny forever.” Lucifer’s crimson eyes burned. “Watch me.” The temple trembled again. Because he meant it. Entirely. The celestial version studied him silently afterward. Then unexpectedly— A faint smile appeared on his face. “You really did change.” Lucifer frowned sharply. “What is that supposed to mean?” The memory looked toward Heaven. “You fell from heaven because you loved freedom more than obedience.” Then his gaze returned to Lucifer. “But now…” The silver-winged version smiled softly. “You finally love someone more than yourself.”
